“Naza” Film on Gaza Genocide Wins Venice Special Jury Prize; Israel Threatens Directors’ Citizenship

The air inside the grand palazzo in Venice was still thick with the ghost of a twenty-five-minute standing ovation. When the voice from the stage announced that Naza had been awarded the Special Jury Prize, the applause didn’t roar so much as it crested, heavy and solemn, across the velvet-draped hall.

On stage, Yuval and Rachel stood side by side. They didn’t smile. They looked like people who had spent three years staring into a dark mirror, waiting for someone else to notice the crack.

The documentary—shot in secret on the cool, salt-licked rooftops of Tel Aviv—was a ghost story built from living voices. Behind digitally blurred silhouettes, Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers had calmly drawn diagrams on scrap paper, explaining the cold mathematics of an AI system named Lavender, detailing how a Hebrew euphemism for expected civilian casualties became just another column on an Excel spreadsheet. They had spoken in Hebrew, the directors insisted, because the film was meant to be a reckoning for home.

Back home, the reckoning arrived before the glass trophy could even be packed into a suitcase.

By Sunday morning, the Mediterranean sun was glaring off the white stone of Tel Aviv, but inside the government offices, the atmosphere was frozen. A press release flashed across smartphone screens with the administrative coldness of a deployment order: the Culture Minister had formally announced immediate steps to strip Yuval and Rachel of their citizenship. Treason, the minister called it. Vile. A betrayal born from the safety of foreign festivals.

In a quiet apartment overlooking a blindingly bright Tel Aviv street, Yuval sat at a kitchen table with his laptop open. Notifications cascaded down the screen—threats, news alerts, fiery statements from politicians demanding exile, interspersed with quiet messages of solidarity from old friends who now whispered when they called.

Rachel stood by the window, pulling the blinds halfway down against the glare. On the table lay the heavy bronze medallion from Venice, catching the thin sliver of light that managed to slip through the slats.

“They’re calling it a weapon,” Rachel said quietly, reading a headline aloud. “An act of war against the state.”

Yuval looked down at his hands, the same hands that had held the camera in the dark, recording men who spoke of flattening neighborhoods with the detached fatigue of office workers.

“We asked them to look at the machinery,” Yuval said, his voice barely audible over the distant hum of traffic outside. “We held up a mirror, and they are furious that it didn’t lie.”

The phone buzzed again—another official statement, another threat of legal erasure, a decree attempting to legislate them out of belonging to the land they were born on.

Outside, the city moved on, sunlit and indifferent. Inside, the directors stared at the quiet metal of the prize, knowing the film was only just beginning its true journey home.
