KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — Temples across the country glowed with lamps and chants early this morning as Hindus nationwide ushered in Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, with prayers, rituals and gatherings that celebrated faith, family and the triumph of good over evil.

The joyous occasion was marked by homes adorned with colourful kolams and flickering oil lamps, as Malaysians of all backgrounds joined in the festive cheer, a reflection of the nation’s unity in diversity.

A Bernama visit to the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves found thousands of devotees gathering as early as 6am to perform prayers, bringing offerings of fruits and flowers to the deities in a gesture of thanksgiving.

For devotee K. Monissha, 26, from Subang Jaya, this year’s Deepavali holds special meaning as it is her first celebration with her husband after getting married last December.

“I usually come to this temple during Thaipusam, but this year we chose to come for Deepavali as well because the atmosphere is livelier, and more family members can join. This is my first Deepavali as a wife,” she said, accompanied by 10 family members.

Monissha, a procurement executive, said that according to Indian tradition, the first Deepavali after marriage is celebrated at the bride’s family home, complete with festive dishes, the giving of saris and cash gifts to family members.

Another devotee, M. Mathesha, 26, a human resource executive from Selayang, expressed her gratitude for being able to celebrate Deepavali with all her siblings this year after several years of being tied down by work commitments.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — Malaysia has been honoured with the Global Zero Waste Special Citation Award, the highest category conferred by the Zero Waste Foundation, underscoring the country’s leadership and commitment in advancing sustainable waste management and circular economy principles.

The award was presented in Istanbul by the First Lady of Turkiye Emine Erdoğan, who is also the patron of the Zero Waste Foundation, to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, during the Global Zero Waste Forum 2025 on Sunday.

According to the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s statement, Nga said the special recognition is a testament to Malaysia’s sustained efforts in transforming urban waste management, promoting environmental stewardship and fostering innovative solutions for sustainable cities.

“This global recognition strengthens my resolve to be a steadfast champion for this cause and I pledge to you today that my team and I will work tirelessly to forge a sincere and meaningful partnership with the Zero Waste Foundation as mandated by the UN.

“Together, we will elevate these critical principles on the global stage – at the United Nations, throughout Asia-Pacific, and across my own region of Asean,” said Nga, who is also president of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly in his acceptance speech.

He emphasised that the special citation underscores the importance of stronger multilateral action and a global commitment to rethink, reduce, re-use and recycle, as well as strengthen Malaysia’s relationship with Mother Earth.

The other three award categories are Innovative Research and Design, Zero Waste Projects, and Zero Waste Practices. Malaysia received the highest award, marking the nation’s leadership and exemplary achievements in advancing Zero Waste solutions under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Anwar Ibrahim.

Malaysia’s leadership in sustainability is reflected through recycling centres and ‘Trash to Cash’ initiatives, to the launch of the Circular Economy Blueprint 2025-2035, which promotes producer responsibility, digital waste tracking systems and green technology hubs to build healthier and more resilient cities.

The country’s efforts also include transforming old landfills into Lestari (Sustainable) Parks, green community spaces powered by renewable energy and Kuala Lumpur’s AI-powered transfer station, which processes 2,500 tonnes of waste daily, thus demonstrating Malaysia’s innovative approach to amplify sustainable urban management.

The country also mobilised more than 100,000 volunteers through the annual Hari Cuci Malaysia (HCM) campaign, modelled after the United Nations’ World Cleanup Day, which has broken five national records since its inception last year.

Later, Nga delivered his keynote closing remarks at the Forum, reaffirming Malaysia’s continued commitment to championing Zero Waste during its presidency of the UN-Habitat Assembly, ensuring full alignment with the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2026-2029.

He also called on all 104 participating countries to integrate Zero Waste into their national climate strategies, empower local authorities as “engines of implementation” and enhance multilevel cooperation to align global frameworks with practical action on the ground.

Nga also highlighted Malaysia’s ongoing advocacy with its counterparts in Brazil to mainstream the New Urban Agenda within the UNFCCC process, ahead of COP30 (Conference of Parties) in Brazil next month.

The Global Zero Waste Forum 2025, themed “Zero Waste in Action: People, Places, Progress”, was held from Oct 17-19 in Istanbul, bringing together representatives from over 104 countries.

It hosted participants from 104 countries, including 118 international partner organisations, mayors, ambassadors and senior representatives from numerous international institutions, such as the UN, UN-Habitat, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Hosted by the Zero Waste Foundation under the patronage of Emine Erdogan, the Forum serves as a global platform to strengthen international cooperation towards achieving waste-free and sustainable cities, in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — The mystery surrounding a Subang Jaya police officer who had not returned home for several days was resolved when he was found safe on Monday.

Subang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat, said the 40-year-old officer was detected returning to the USJ 8 Police Station quarters at around 1.45am, Sinar Harian reported today.

“The USJ 8 Police Station staff noticed the officer’s vehicle entering the station quarters. The investigating officer handling the case was immediately informed,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He added that the investigative team brought the officer to the police station and informed his wife to come in for verification.

“The officer is now safe and in good health. Investigations found that during his absence, he had been at several mosques around Morib, Banting, and Putra Heights,” Wan Azlan said.

The officer, identified as Mohd Fadhil Mohamed @ Ahadiah, was last seen at his residence in the Subang Jaya Police District Headquarters quarters on Jalan USJ 8 on October 15.

He reportedly left in a black Proton Saga with registration number WC 8024 K.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — “No one should point fingers at the forest mountain guides (MGP) before the full investigation is completed,” said Sabrie Zoo, referring to the case of hiker Mustaqqeem Mansoor, whose body was found atop Gunung Liang in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Sabrie, 44, a veteran mountain guide at Gunung Tahan with over 27 years of experience, stressed that blame cannot be placed on the two guides involved until the investigation is finalised, according to Berita Harian.

He noted that each MGP undergoes extensive training to ensure the safety of hikers.

“Even though I am not a member of MGP, my duties and responsibilities remain the same. I was disappointed when some parties claimed that a guide abandoned a hiker at the summit of Gunung Liang, causing the victim to die from extreme cold (hypothermia),” he said.

Sabrie cautioned against making premature accusations before hearing explanations from the guides involved, saying the situation worsens when unverified stories circulate.

He added that unfounded allegations could damage the guides’ reputation, cause distress, and potentially threaten the safety of their families.

Many outsiders have allegedly made statements suggesting that the MGP abandoned the late Mustaqqeem at the summit. The repercussions of these claims have also affected the victim’s companions who participated in the hike.

The Pahang State Forestry Department (JPNP) is reported to be reviewing the incident in detail and will meet with the two guides involved. This is the first case involving MGP in Pahang before a report is submitted to the director-general of Forestry for Peninsular Malaysia.

Mustaqqeem, 34, reportedly began his hike on October 10 with 10 friends via the Bentong route to Gunung Liang. He did not return after the climb, prompting his wife to report him missing to the police.

A search and rescue operation was launched involving the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), police, and the Civil Defence Force (APM). Mustaqqeem’s body was discovered around 3.30pm last Thursday at the summit.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — The Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah has introduced new health requirements for pilgrims in the 1447H/2026M Haj season, including the discontinuation of the Tabung Haji (TH) Treatment Centre in the Holy Land.

In a statement today, TH group managing director and chief executive officer Mustakim Mohamad said the new health protocols would be enforced by TH and must be followed by Malaysian pilgrims to obtain their Haj visa.

Key requirements include being free from infectious diseases, serious or uncontrolled chronic conditions, and having the physical ability to perform Haj rituals independently.

Pilgrims with conditions such as chronic kidney or heart failure, chronic lung or liver disease, cognitive or motor impairments, high-risk pregnancies, active infections, or cancer undergoing treatment will not be eligible to perform Haj.

Mustakim also advised prospective pilgrims to prepare physically for the journey, given the long stay in Saudi Arabia and the hot, dusty conditions.

He stressed that good health remains a key requirement for Haj, as outlined in the National Muzakah Haj Resolutions and in line with the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) mandatory health screenings.

In addition, for the 2026 Haj season, TH will no longer operate a Treatment Centre in the Holy Land. Pilgrims requiring further treatment will be referred to Saudi hospitals, with ongoing supervision from Malaysian health experts.

However, TH will continue to provide health clinics at all pilgrim accommodations in Makkah and Madinah.

These clinics will offer outpatient services and pharmacy support, managed by qualified medical staff from the MOH, to ensure the continuity of healthcare for Malaysian pilgrims, including assistance for the elderly and those with disabilities.

Mustakim added that TH, in collaboration with MOH, plans to provide healthcare facilities at private hospitals in Saudi Arabia if necessary. and will deploy 225 healthcare personnel to support the 2026 Haj season.

TH remains committed to prioritising the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of Malaysian pilgrims by dedicating a significant portion of its Holy Land quota to medical staff. — Bernama
