3 factors Putrajaya must consider before reopening economy |

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya needs to consider several factors objectively before deciding to reopen economic sectors, after clusters in the manufacturing sector had led to a surge of Covid-19 cases in Selangor, a health think tank says.
The Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy said the government must ask itself three things:
- Is the epidemic under control?
- Is the healthcare system able to cope with a resurgence of cases that may arise after the relaxing of measures and reopening of sectors?
- Is the public health surveillance system able to cope, detect, manage cases, and identify areas where there is a resurgence of cases?
These three questions, Galen CEO Azrul Mohd Khalib said, could help determine whether restrictions can be released slowly or not at all.

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has sworn to party MPs that he would not support Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister, or become a partner of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said tonight.
Speaking at an online talk show, Ahmad said Zahid had made the oath at a recent meeting with several Umno MPs to explain the party’s decisions over the past week.
“There are accusations that the president is leading Umno to be with PH and DAP. The president took an oath in God’s name (Wallahi, Wabillahi, Watallah) in front of Umno MPs that he would not support Anwar as prime minister or be with PH or DAP.
“I was there. The president didn’t want to meet the MPs in big groups for fear of flouting SOPs, so he met them one by one or in pairs to inform them about the party’s direction,” he said.

Think twice before jumping ship, MPs told |

PETALING JAYA: Any MP planning to jump ship in support of Perikatan Nasional should think twice before doing so, according to academician Azmi Hassan.
Azmi said defecting MPs are likely to be punished at the next general election (GE15) for going against the wishes of their voters and party. “Especially those from Umno and PKR,” he told FMT.
He said Umno grassroot members were not likely to forgive MPs who stood shoulder to shoulder with Perikatan Nasional. “The same with MPs from PKR. They may not get voted in again for going against the wishes of the party,” he said.
He advised MPs to seek the mandate of their voters before making the jump. “Once their voters agree with the jump, they do not have to worry about being punished in the next GE as that is what the voters want,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had previously offered the deputy prime minister’s post to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan, the party’s secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said last night.
Speaking at an online talk show, Ahmad said the offer was turned down by Mohamad, who is widely known as Tok Mat. Ahmad said Mohamad wanted to abide by the Supreme Council’s decision to reject the post.
“It is true that he rejected it out of respect for decisions made by the party,” said Ahmad, without elaborating when the offer was made.
He also admitted that Umno had proposed last October that Muhyiddin give the deputy prime minister’s post to an Umno candidate, though this proposal fell on deaf ears.

Earth is warming faster than previously thought, scientists say |

Earth is warming faster than previously thought, scientists say, and the window is closing to avoid catastrophic outcomes
(CNN)As the world battles historic droughts, landscape-altering wildfires and deadly floods, a landmark report from global scientists says the window is rapidly closing to cut our reliance on fossil fuels and avoid catastrophic changes that would transform life as we know it.
The state-of-the-science report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says the world has rapidly warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels, and is now careening toward 1.5 degrees — a critical threshold that world leaders agreed warming should remain below to avoid worsening impacts.
Only by making deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, while also removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, can we halt the precipitous trend.
"Bottom line is that we have zero years left to avoid dangerous climate change, because it's here," Michael E. Mann, a lead author of the IPCC's 2001 report, told CNN.
Unlike previous assessments, Monday's report concludes it is "unequivocal" that humans have caused the climate crisis and confirms that "widespread and rapid changes" have already occurred, some of them irreversibly.
That is due in part to the breakneck pace at which the planet has been recently warming, faster than scientists have previously observed. Since 2018, when the panel published a special report on the significance of 1.5-degrees, greenhouse gas emissions have continued mostly unabated and have pushed global temperatures higher.
Even under the IPCC's most optimistic scenario, in which the world's emissions begin to drop sharply today and are reduced to net zero by 2050, global temperature will still peak above the 1.5-degree threshold before falling.
In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the report "a code red for humanity," and noted the 1.5-degree threshold is "perilously close."
"The only way to prevent exceeding this threshold is by urgently stepping up our efforts, and pursuing the most ambitious path," Guterres said.

Stop using GLCs to consolidate power, Bersih tells PN |

PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 has urged Umno and all political parties to demand reforms to appointments at GLCs and to put an end to the use of such government agencies for political benefit.
The electoral watchdog also called for the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government to stop using leadership roles at GLCs as bargaining chips to win political support and consolidate its power.
Instead, the coalition urged the government to introduce a GLC appointment law that will put in place proper mechanisms to appoint individuals to corporate positions based on meritocracy, transparency and fairness.
“GLC appointments should be screened by bipartisan Parliamentary Select Committees (PSC) to ensure they are based on merit, and not to favour political allies,” it said.

Comprehensive clinical studies only way to end Ivermectin debate |

KUALA LUMPUR: Is Ivermectin really a wonder drug capable of saving the lives of severely ill (category 5) Covid-19 patients?
Armed with the findings of a few small-scale studies done overseas, Malaysian pro-Ivermectin groups, including some opposition MPs, are pressing the authorities to approve the use of this medication to treat Covid-19.
The polemics surrounding Ivermectin – an anti-parasitic drug most commonly used in veterinary medicine – gathered steam after a medical practitioner, in an interview with a local television station recently, supported the use of the drug in the treatment of Covid-19 as it is said to reduce the risk of death.
However, a large number of medical practitioners in this country beg to differ, saying that the efficacy of the drug in treating Covid-19 has not been clinically proven.
The health ministry’s National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has also announced that so far no products containing active ivermectin have been registered for human consumption in the country.
Nevertheless, the differences in opinion among medical experts on the use of Ivermectin to treat Covid-19, as well as the risk of taking it without a doctor’s guidance, have not stopped some people from buying the drug from the black market.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 8 — Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin said today he would continue serving the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin pending the determination of its legitimacy in Parliament next month.
The Coordinating Minister for the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme said he wanted to continue his work to ensure that the country reaches herd immunity against Covid-19.
Saying that he is still very much an Umno member and loyal to the party, Khairy said it is also important for him to accomplish the task of ramping up the vaccination rate in the country.
“Let me do my job. The vaccination is a matter of the lives of Malaysians. So long as there is no vote (against the government), let me do my job. For Umno, I am an Umno minister. Once we have done with our voting, we can decide on what’s next.
