There is an outbreak of national moaning over the silence of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin amid Malaysia’s horrifying Covid-19 crisis.
As the war against the disease piles more hardship on Malaysians, his performance has been poor. Very poor.
Provocatively poor, if you were to take several other national issues on which he has remained silent.
Day after day, he has been battered by dreadful comments for his government’s questionable implementation and poor contingency planning to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Even as his critics hammered away, Muhyiddin offered no plans. Even the hollow words have stopped.
Yesterday, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng branded him the “worst Malaysian prime minister in history” for practising a double standard by instructing premises listed under the Hotspot Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system to close for three days.
On Friday, Indonesia told its citizens to stay home and take precautions against the Covid-19 infection, and not to end up like Malaysia. Public anger against Muhyiddin worsened.
What would Muhyiddin have to do for his critics to take him seriously?
Perhaps, he should personally take charge of the madness. He can begin with stopping his ministers from contradicting one another and confusing the people.

Blasts close to a secondary school in the Afghan capital Kabul have left at least 30 people dead and dozens more injured, officials have said.
The explosions took place as students were leaving the building on Saturday, with pictures on social media showing abandoned school bags in the street.
Most of the victims were girls, a ministry of education spokeswoman said.
No-one has admitted carrying out the attack in Dasht-e-Barchi - an area often hit by Sunni Islamist militants.
Taliban militants denied any involvement.
Afghan officials say they believe the explosions were caused by a car bomb and mortars.
The neighbourhood in western Kabul is home to many from the Hazara minority community, who are of Mongolian and Central Asian descent and are mainly Shia Muslims.

On Saturday morning, Dr Akshay Nair, a Mumbai-based eye surgeon, was waiting to operate on a 25-year-old woman who had recovered from a bout of Covid-19 three weeks ago.
Inside the surgery, an ear, nose and throat specialist was already at work on the patient, a diabetic.
He had inserted a tube in her nose and was removing tissues infected with mucormycosis, a rare but dangerous fungal infection. This aggressive infection affects the nose, eye and sometimes the brain.
After his colleague finished, Dr Nair would carry out a three hour procedure to remove the patient's eye.
"I will be removing her eye to save her life. That's how this disease works," Dr Nair told me.
Even as a deadly second wave of Covid-19 ravages India, doctors are now reporting a rash of cases involving a rare infection - also called the "black fungus" - among recovering and recovered Covid-19 patients.

PETALING JAYA: The prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, was urged today to take charge of the daily National Security Council (MKN) meetings to deal with the country’s struggling economy and the Covid-19 crisis.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the latest surge in Covid-19 infections and series of movement control orders in several key states had caused a slow economic recovery.
In a statement, he said the Perikatan Nasional-led government’s crisis management failure, “riddled with double standards, policy flip-flops and SOP U-turns” were the major contributory factors of the sluggish recovery.
Lim accused the government of trying to shift responsibility onto the rakyat, citing the recent warnings by officials that there could be more than 5,000 Covid-19 daily cases after Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the threats to detain or even imprison those who violate MCO restrictions.

When religion and politics don’t mix |

Some Malaysians may have forgotten that it was during Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s first tenure as prime minister that religion was used, with a passion, to win votes.
When the Iranian Revolution swept across Iran at the end of the 1970s and experienced an Islamic revival, PAS became stronger as a political party.
Mahathir was afraid of the rising influence of PAS on the Malays, so he tried to appeal to them by making Malaysia more Islamic. A new dress code and a ban on the use of certain words by non-Muslims were started during his tenure.
One could add the Biro Tata Negara (BTN) or the National Civics Bureau, the dumbing down of the learning of English in schools, and Project IC in Sabah. In Project IC, or Project M, hundreds of thousands of immigrants of Muslim origin, mostly from the southern Philippines, were given ICs to change the demographics of the state.
In her interview with FMT, former minister Rafidah Aziz, who was sacked from Umno in 2018, claimed that she was sick of the “toxicity” of Malaysian politics. She also said she feared for Malaysia’s future because religion was used as a political tool.
Many Malaysians breathed a sigh of relief at her frank remarks. She is a straight talker and her views would have carried a lot of weight. Here was a veteran politician who empathised with them. They had been forced to live with the toxic combination of religion and politics for decades. It is a view that is shared by both Malays and non-Malays.

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya has been told to consider using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat Covid-19 in view of its success in China.
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, which is expected to worsen, will add pressure on the health system, especially for patients needing intensive care (ICU).
Due to that, she urged the government to follow in the footsteps of China in fighting Covid-19 cases.
She said according to worldometers.info, the country of 1.4 billion reported only 300 active Covid-19 cases on April 22.

What’s wrong with Datukship for Pandelela, asks Sarawak DAP Youth |

PETALING JAYA: There is nothing wrong with awarding national diver Pandelela Rinong a “Datuk” title, says Sarawak DAP Youth.
Stampin DAP Youth chief Abdul Aziz Isa noted that several prominent figures in Malaysia had also received Datukships in their 20s, although “not all of them are making this country proud”.
“Some of them are even charged for being involved in organised crime and fraudulent, dodgy companies. Some of their achievements are unknown to the public but they are somehow given the ‘Datuk’ title,” he said in a statement.
His comments come after state youth and sports minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it was not good to reward athletes every time they won something.
Karim also said there was no need to “spoil” 28-year-old Pandelela with a Datukship, adding that it would be “difficult for her to interact normally outside”.
Pandelela had won the gold medal in the women’s 10m platform at the Fina Diving World Cup two days ago, the first ever gold medal for Malaysia in this competition.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Umno President Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi sees eye to eye with the party’s Youth Wing urging the government to immediately set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the revelations made by attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.
In a statement, the veteran politician then implored other Umno ministers to support and bring forward the recommendation made by Umno Youth so that immediate action can be taken.
“The exposure made by two former heads of important government organisations is very serious, especially since it involves political interference and corruption in these institutions that are supposed to be the backbone of constitutional integrity, rule of law and national security.
