KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 — A group of Opposition MPs have called for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan to resign following today’s decision to defer lowering the voting age to 18 until 2022.
In a joint statement, the MPs said the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to postpone Undi18 until September 1, 2022 was a betrayal of trust and an insult to the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara.
They added that Takiyuddin — who also voted for the amendment — had said in Parliament on November 3, 2020 that the Federal Constitution would be amended to allow 18-year-olds to vote by July 2021.
“However, today, the EC announced that Undi18 will only happen in September 2022. We strongly criticise the EC’s decision. It is a huge insult to the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat.

The Goldman Sachs settlement: A burning issue – and a smokescreen |

Quote:
Why did they have to concede confidentiality? Did it have anything to do with the quantum of compensation? How did a government bent on recovering a “reasonable” sum of US$7.5 billion for the nation’s “agony” and “trauma” agree to receive only one-third of that sum – and with a confidentiality clause, to boot!
Despite loud chest-thumping on the issue, recent developments in the never-ending 1MDB saga have raised questions as to whether the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is serious about rooting out corruption in Malaysia.
Events over the last week have seen both ex-prime minister Najib Razak and former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng Kok Wah complain that the US government was withholding evidence that could help them in their respective cases.
Whether this is true and whether it is being done deliberately to stifle their cases, as Najib and Ng claim, is left to be seen.

Turning point for Malaysian stocks as foreigners pile in |

KUALA LUMPUR: Overseas investors have been pulling out of Malaysian equities for 20 straight months. March could mark the turn of the tide.
Foreigners have poured a net US$97 million into local stocks this month through March 22, while withdrawing a combined US$1 billion from four other Southeast Asian markets tracked by Bloomberg.
The inflows come as valuation of Malaysia’s main equity gauge shows it is now the cheapest in the region while the dividend yield of 3% is the highest among major Asia Pacific indexes after Singapore.
Foreigners becoming net buyers would mark a rare event for a market that saw global funds pull a record US$5.7 billion last year. Political upheaval combined with the Covid-19 outbreak had soured sentiment even as local investors turned Malaysian glove makers into one of Asia’s hottest pandemic trades.

Sources: Oriental Daily set to cease printing and go fully digital, retrench staff by next month
KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 — After over 18 years of publication, local Chinese-language newspaper Oriental Daily is set to make a permanent transition to the online space and print its last edition on April 16, sources have confirmed today.
It was also learned that a retrenchment exercise involving at least 60 staff is expected to take place at the news outlet, which plans to transition towards being a fully online news site.
“April 16 is the last day of print. [It] will go fully digital after that.
“Around 60 staff are also expected to be retrenched,” said one source without elaborating which departments are set to suffer the worst.

PETALING JAYA: PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin has hit back at Mukhriz Mahathir after the latter claimed Anwar Ibrahim had tried to remove Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) prime minister with PAS’ support.
In a statement earlier today, Mukhriz claimed Kelantan PAS secretary Che Abdullah Mat Nawi had revealed that the PKR president had tried to get PAS to support a no-confidence motion against Mahathir.
Describing it as a “stab in the back”, the Pejuang man told PKR not to act as if its leaders were sincere and gentlemanly when PH was in power.

DAP slams PAS plan to redraw boundaries to benefit Malay-Muslim community |

PETALING JAYA: DAP has described PAS’ proposal to redraw election boundaries to benefit the Malay-Muslim community as an admission the Perikatan Nasional-led government will “gerrymander constituencies” at the expense of others.
Its secretary-general, Lim Guan Eng, said the proposal by PAS’ Khairuddin Aman Razali was “divisive and irresponsible” and would “discriminate, deprive and deny the rights of non-Malays and non-Muslims”.
Khairuddin, the plantation industries and commodities minister, had said in a Facebook post that if PN won the general election with a two-thirds majority, changes to election boundaries to benefit Malay-Muslims could be made, as well as increasing the number of parliamentary seats in Malay-majority states.
“We can achieve this goal by strengthening the alliance (among) the three Malay parties, despite the obstacles. Straight fights are important in order to win GE15,” he said.
In a statement today, Lim said the suggestion on redrawing electoral boundaries based on race and religion was unconstitutional, and would be rejected by “all right-thinking and justice-loving Malaysians”.
