Australian scientists map millions of galaxies with new telescope
Posted by: superadmin - 12-01-2020, 01:15 PM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

Australian scientists say they have mapped a million new galaxies using an advanced telescope in the desert.

The CSIRO, the national science agency, said its new telescope had created "a new atlas of the universe" in record time - showing unprecedented detail.

It mapped three million galaxies in total, with pictures revealing twice the level of detail of previous surveys, the study said.

Astronomers hope the images will lead to new discoveries about the universe.

The CSIRO said the mapping took just 300 hours, whereas previous all-sky surveys had taken years.

With the data publicly available, scientists around the world would be able to study "everything from star formation to how galaxies and their super-massive black hole evolve and interact", said lead author Dr David McConnell.

'Firehose of falsehood:' How Trump is trying to confuse the public about the election
Posted by: superadmin - 11-30-2020, 06:43 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

(CNN Business)A version of this article first appeared in the "Reliable Sources" newsletter. You can sign up for free right here.

Trump is Trump. There's nothing new to say about the man. But there is still lots to learn about his enablers. So many people, from GOP functionaries to Fox News hosts, are helping him to undermine democracy by denying the election and attacking reality. So many people are complicit.

People like Maria Bartiromo. Formerly an acclaimed journalist, known around the world for making CEOs tell the truth, now she tees up Trump to recite lie after lie. Her Sunday morning call with Trump on Fox News was his first "interview" since he lost the election, but it wasn't a real interview at all. He wasn't ready to acknowledge that he lost, and neither was she. He displayed delusional weakness. She was complicit. And she's far from the only one.

GOP leaders stay silent
Ron Brownstein on CNN Sunday night: As Trump's conspiracy theory about the "rigged" election "gets more and more fantastical and far-reaching, implicating the DOJ, the FBI, and Republican governors, the silence of Republicans in Congress — Mitch McConnell in particular, Kevin McCarthy in particular, who are allowing this poison to spread in the American political system — looks more and more like a modern analogue to the silence of Republican congressional leaders during the rampages of Joe McCarthy in the early 1950s. I think history will have no trouble finding a parallel between Mitch McConnell's efforts to kind of look the other way and what so many Republican leaders did until Joseph Welch said, at long last, sir 'have you no decency?'"

Trump is backsliding
He lost the election nearly four weeks ago yet he refuses to admit it. Judging by his tweets, he's spiraling even deeper into denial. The Bartiromo interview was a sign that he's prepared to do battle in public -- a disturbing display of weakness that some people interpret as strength. His Thanksgiving evening Q&A with reporters was another sign of the same thing. After holding a call with members of the military, he fielded questions for the first time in three weeks — the "longest gap" of his presidency — mostly by deflecting and deceiving. When he walked out, one reporter asked "Is this the language of a dictator?" and another said, "Mr. President, some people say you're denying reality."

On Sunday's "Reliable Sources," Jonathan Rauch placed Trump's recent statements in the context of information warfare. Trump is running a "classic Russian-style disinfo campaign," known as the "firehose of falsehood," which is when you "push out as many different stories and conspiracy theories and lies and half-truths as you possibly can," Rauch said. "The goal here is to confuse people, and he's doing very well at that. This is a classic propaganda tactic."

>> Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO's "Chernobyl," reacted to my segment with Rauch by reprising one of the most memorable lines from his series: "The real danger is that if we hear enough lies, then we no longer recognize the truth at all."

A leaderless America slips deep into a grim pandemic winter
Posted by: superadmin - 11-30-2020, 06:15 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

(CNN)America is sliding into a winter limbo of alarming spikes in Covid-19 cases and deepening economic pain while an apathetic lame duck White House and a deadlocked Congress provide no political leadership.

The darkest holiday season in modern history beckons, yet President Donald Trump and his closest aides, sulking after his election defeat, are doing little to save lives, apart from claiming credit for a vaccine that represents a way out of the nightmare of 2020 but remains months away for most Americans.

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives and GOP-led Senate will return to Washington this week, but have shown no signs they can get together to ease the consequent economic pain of millions of unemployed Americans amid scenes of long Great Depression-style lines outside food banks.

President-elect Joe Biden is moving quickly to put a diverse and experienced team around him -- he rolled out an all-female senior communications team Sunday, and he is expected to announce top economic officials this week.

But even a President-elect who promises to replace Trump's neglect with a science-based approach to the pandemic can only do so much before he takes office on January 20, when the health crisis and economic toll are likely to be far worse.

Set up PSC on corruption, integrity to ensure budget not abused, says G25
Posted by: superadmin - 11-30-2020, 10:41 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: PARLIMEN-DEWAN-RAKYAT-AHLI-PARLIMEN-04.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The G25 group of former top civil servants today called for the formation of a Parliamentary Select Committee on Corruption and Integrity to ensure the 2021 budget is properly spent.

Welcoming the passing of the budget at the policy stage, G25 said the fact that the government was willing to accommodate the demands of the opposition showed the maturity of the Cabinet ministers.

“While the big expenditure is justified, the government must also demonstrate to Parliament that all the ministries and departments will spend their allocations productively to benefit the target groups without the wastage and leakages that seem to become a regular occurrence especially in recent years, as pointed out in the auditor-general’s reports to the Public Accounts Committee.

“These weaknesses are often associated with cronyism, favouritism and corruption. As such, they must not be allowed to happen again and again so that we can redeem our past reputation as one of the best managed economies among the fast-developing countries.

Budget 2021 vote debacle: Opposition’s best bet now is to reorganise for GE15

Budget 2021 vote debacle: Opposition’s best bet now is to reorganise for GE15, say experts

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — Analysts say attempts by the Opposition to block Budget 2021 at the committee level will only risk angering the rakyat further.

Political scientist Professor Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid said the Opposition’s decision not to oppose the Bill last Thursday in Parliament was tantamount to accepting the legitimacy of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

As such he does not think they will oppose the Bill at the committee stage.
“I don’t think they will,” Fauzi told Malay Mail.

Why Oxford's Covid-19 vaccine could do more for the world than other shots
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2020, 05:33 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

London (CNN)In the days since Oxford University and AstraZeneca unveiled the results of the partnership's Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trials, a growing number of questions have emerged.

The stated 70% average efficacy was significantly lower than the 94.5% to 95% reported by the other two leading candidates, Moderna and Pfizer.

Yet this vaccine could still prove to be more valuable for the world than the other two in the coming months. If the questions over its results are answered and it receives approval, it may lead the way in providing vaccine coverage in poorer countries where it is urgently needed.

The UK government took the first step in that approval process on Friday, announcing that it had formally referred the candidate to the UK's medicines regulator for assessment.

In Japan, more people died from suicide last month than from Covid in all of 2020
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2020, 05:27 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

In Japan, more people died from suicide last month than from Covid in all of 2020. And women have been impacted most

Tokyo (CNN)Eriko Kobayashi has tried to kill herself four times.

The first time, she was just 22 years old with a full-time job in publishing that didn't pay enough to cover her rent and grocery bills in Tokyo. "I was really poor," said Kobayashi, who spent three days unconscious in hospital after the incident.

Now 43, Kobayashi has written books on her mental health struggles and has a steady job at an NGO. But the coronavirus is bringing back the stress she used to feel.

"My salary was cut, and I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel," she said. "I constantly feel a sense of crisis that I might fall back into poverty."

Experts have warned that the pandemic could lead to a mental health crisis. Mass unemployment, social isolation, and anxiety are taking their toll on people globally.

In Japan, government statistics show suicide claimed more lives in October than Covid-19 has over the entire year to date. The monthly number of Japanese suicides rose to 2,153 in October, according to Japan's National Police Agency. As of Friday, Japan's total Covid-19 toll was 2,087, the health ministry said.

Patriot: Bringing back National Service would be a waste of taxpayers’ money
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2020, 05:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 — Veterans’ group Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot) has slammed the government’s purported plans to reestablish the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) as a colossal waste of taxpayers’ money, especially as the Covid-19 crisis continues to rage on.

Patriot president Brigadier General (Rtd) Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji said previous accusations of cronyism linked to PLKN were not addressed as nearly half of the RM8.43 billion spent on the programme went towards rent for the training camps.

“There was much criticism towards the training programme, including that the main objective to instill patriotism, foster understanding, harmony, unity, and a caring Malaysian society, had failed.

“Although studies might show the PLKN was successful in achieving a score of about 80 per cent in instilling patriotism, societal behavior among our populace for both youths and adults does not show.

  David Hasselhoff - Rhinestone Cowboy

I've been walkin' these streets so long
Singin' the same old song
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow and the rain
There's been a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Getting cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone
Well, I really don't mind the rain
And a smile can hide all the pain
But you're down when you're ridin' the train that's takin' the long way
And I dream of the things I'll do
With a subway token and a dollar tucked inside my shoe
There'll be a load of… Uh
