Kellie’s Castle

A Romantic Mystery in Stone

Kellie’s Castle, also known as Kellie’s Folly, is an unfinished hilltop mansion located in Batu Gajah, Perak. Built by Scottish planter William Kellie-Smith in the early 20th century, the castle was meant to be either a loving gift for his wife or a dream home for his son—stories vary, adding to its charm and mystery.

Construction was halted after Kellie-Smith’s sudden death, leaving behind a majestic yet haunting ruin surrounded by lush greenery. The building features Moorish-style arches, hidden staircases, and even plans for what would have been Malaysia’s first elevator.

Nestled beside Sungai Raya, a small creek leading to the Kinta River, the castle today is a popular tourist attraction—captivating visitors with its romantic history, striking architecture, and whispered tales of spirits that still roam its halls.
