PETALING JAYA: The National Patriots Association (Patriot) has called for lawmakers to act according to their conscience and in line with the aspirations of the people.
Patriot president Brig-Gen (Rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji said every MP had a duty to the country and it was imperative that they acted in its best interests.
“We appeal to all lawmakers, on both sides of the political divide and in both West and East Malaysia, to act conscionably,” he said in a statement in the wake of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement that he would prove his majority in Parliament in September and that the King had agreed to this.
“Patriot will condemn any move by any lawmaker taking a particular side while being driven by deceit or solely for the purpose of self-gain.
“Likewise, we condemn any form of coercion used to compel lawmakers to support any one side.”

PETALING JAYA: The economy will suffer from any delay in a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, according to two economists.
Center for Market Education CEO Carmelo Ferlito and Mohamed Aslam Haneef of International Islamic University Malaysia told FMT they believed businesses were disappointed that the vote would be delayed to next month, as announced by Muhyiddin yesterday.
Ferlito said market observers were expecting a sign of clarity and direction during the prime minister’s address to the nation but were let down.
He noted that consumer and business confidence indexes were both in sharp decline and said an uncertain business environment was a bane to investors.

PETALING JAYA: The Pakatan Harapan women’s wing has lodged a police report against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, accusing him of misleading the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday when he claimed he still had a parliamentary majority.
In a live broadcast, Muhyiddin said he presented the King with sufficient declarations to prove that he still enjoyed majority support, adding that he would put this to the test in September
“The figure he presented was clearly false,” said Wanita PH deputy chief Raj Munni @ Aiman Athirah Sabu, as – by her reckoning – at least 115 MPs have declared their opposition to Muhyiddin.
“Therefore, we are of the opinion that it is very likely that (Muhyiddin) has presented a false declaration of support to His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” the senator said in a statement.
The report was made at 8pm yesterday at the Gombak district police headquarters.

PETALING JAYA: Youth-led movements like #Lawan, Hartal Doktor Kontrak and Bendera Hitam are getting support from their older brethren, with veteran activists from the Reformasi era encouraging them to stick to their guns and prepare for resistance from the authorities.
In the last few days, youth leaders have been called up by police for their roles in Sunday’s #Lawan demonstration, held to protest the government’s failure in managing the health and economic crises.
A few weeks earlier, junior doctors staged a walkout and were threatened with disciplinary action over the protest, which came after their demands for better career prospects and perks were not addressed.
Zahir Hassan, who began his life as an activist after then-deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim was sacked in 1998, warned that maintaining the stamina to continue the fight for change could be difficult, adding that he had seen many lose their mettle.
“You must have strong principles and hold onto your ideals,” he said. “Without these, you lose your energy and drive. I’ve seen people get distracted and fall short.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 ― Yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin insisted he still has the support of the majority of federal lawmakers, in the form of their statutory declaration, to continue leading the government.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president said after disclosing that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah informed him that the latter was given SDs from eight Umno MPs who formally informed the Dewan Rakyat Speaker they were withdrawing support for him.
Muhyiddin has also pledged to table a confidence vote when Parliament convenes in September, to dispel the continued doubts over his legitimacy to remain as prime minister.
Malay Mail tallied up the events that unfolded this week, as more and more Oppositions claimed that the Pagoh MP had lost his majority, to determine if Muhyiddin’s insistence was plausible.

From Clement Stanley
Summer days can be very long, especially when you are waiting for September to arrive.
That is when Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will leave it to 220 MPs to decide his fate and that of the Perikatan Nasional-led government as per his announcement on Aug 4.
In the meantime, the nation holds its breath.
I have said it before and I will say it again. Our MPs should stop acting like a bunch of cowards and smooth-talking politicians. It’s time to show the real you and what you stand for. Now is the time for you to step forward and stand tall.
There is no need to wait for September. If you have any guts, come clean. You owe the people of Malaysia this much.
Enough of these hide and seek games. Why should you wait for September to arrive before stating your stand for the nation to see?

Hold Parliament sitting no later than Aug 9, demand opposition MPs |

PETALING JAYA: Opposition MPs have stressed that the next Parliament sitting must be held as soon as possible, no later than Aug 9.
The MPs said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin can call for an earlier meeting of the Dewan Rakyat under Standing Order 11(3) to table, debate and decide on the motion of confidence.
In a statement, they said it was unacceptable that this issue was being put off until September.
“It is highly unreasonable for a government, whose legitimacy and majority support is under question, to delay this process in Parliament,” they said.
The MPs said the question of government stability must be resolved now, taking into account the Covid-19 situation in the country, where the number of deaths has continued to rise every day and the economic situation in the country continues to languish.

PETALING JAYA: Testing a sitting government’s level of support is best done in the legislature although the courts have recognised another option, based on what took place in Perak in 2009, a senior lawyer said.
Bastian Pius Vendargon said the honourable path for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was to convene a sitting of the Dewan Rakyat as soon as possible to have a motion of no confidence tabled.
“All Standing Orders may be appropriately applied to conduct this exercise,” he said, adding that this was critical for the government to function, more so when there were lingering doubts over its legitimacy.
Vendargon was responding to Muhyiddin’s announcement earlier today that he was not resigning from his post as he still enjoyed sufficient support in the Dewan Rakyat.
Muhyiddin added that his government would table a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat in September to test his majority, adding that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to his proposal.
