Afghanistan: Fighting rages as Taliban besiege three key cities
Posted by: superadmin - 08-01-2021, 10:00 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Fighting is raging around three major cities in southern and western Afghanistan as Taliban militants seek to seize them from government forces.

Taliban fighters have entered parts of Herat, Lashkar Gah and Kandahar.

They have made rapid gains in rural areas since it was announced almost all foreign troops would go by September.

But the fate of these key cities could be crucial amid fears of a humanitarian crisis and how long government forces will be able to hold out.

The fundamentalist Islamist militia is already thought to have captured up to half of all Afghanistan's territory, including lucrative border crossings with Iran and Pakistan.

So, will we have an interim PM?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-01-2021, 09:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The writer Ambrose Bierce sarcastically defined politics in The Devil’s Dictionary thus: “A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.”

I don’t think any Malaysian would disagree with this definition, especially not after witnessing the heady happenings of the past year and the culmination of months of political shenanigans in Parliament this past week.

It is very clear that personal and party interests are masquerading as national interest or principles.

Many members of the public have expressed disgust, with some asking whether Parliament can go any lower.

We saw, for instance, how the government, to avoid a vote that could show it did not have majority support in Parliament, informed MPs that the emergency ordinances had been earlier revoked by the Cabinet and, therefore, there was no need for it to be debated and voted upon.

The announcement came as a surprise to the MPs and to the public.

We saw how the speaker of the Parliament, who is supposed to be impartial, behaved. We saw how Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was criticised by MPs and citizens on social media for leaving without answering questions.

We saw how Takiyuddin Hassan, the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of law, handled himself in the august House.

Heck, we even saw the Covid-19 virus – the SARS-CoV-2 – make a cameo appearance in Parliament, causing the House to be shut down for well past an hour and for the sitting to resume only to be adjourned. The virus proved pivotal to the plot of the drama.

  500 days that changed Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 08-01-2021, 09:09 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: SJR_ROADBLOCK_POLICE_ARMY_COVID19_FMT_24012021-6.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Friday marked the 500th day since the first movement control order was implemented to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, although the policy has of late been derided following a surge in infections.

Better known as MCO, or sometimes referred to as a lockdown, the movement restrictions came into effect on March 18 last year, ushering in a “new norm” which saw the public adhering to various SOPs.

It spawned various iterations, such as the enhanced MCO (EMCO), the recovery MCO, and various phases of the national recovery plan.

All were not without their problems, especially when it came to the accompanying rules, familarly known as SOPs.

Some businesses were left confused, while others questioned the rationale, for instance, banning dining-in yet allowing eateries to operate until 8pm.

MP SPEAKS | Parliament lockdown symbolises PN’s failure to control Covid-19
Posted by: superadmin - 08-01-2021, 08:56 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Lim Kit Siang

MP SPEAKS | The Parliament lockdown last Thursday and on Monday symbolises the lack of credibility, legitimacy and the abysmal failure to bring under control the Covid-19 pandemic of Muhyiddin Yassin’s government.

Because of its Sheraton Move” origins, the only redeeming feature of the illegitimate, undemocratic “backdoor” government is to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control, which the kakistocratic backdoor government has signally failed to do.

When the Covid-19 pandemic started under the Pakatan Harapan government last year, there were only 22 Covid-19 cases and zero death when the Pakatan Harapan government was toppled on Feb 24 that same year.

Muhyiddin taking final step to save himself, say MPs
Posted by: superadmin - 07-31-2021, 10:45 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Opposition MPs have decried the decision to postpone Monday’s sitting of the Dewan Rakyat, saying it reeked of cowardice on the part of the government and it was proof that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has lost majority support.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the postponement was a political move by Muhyiddin to avoid calls for him to prove his parliamentary majority on Monday.

“With this new development and the crisis between the prime minister and the Palace, it further exposes him as a troubled prime minister,” he told FMT.

“Muhyiddin is under more pressure and this (postponing Parliament) is his last attempt to save himself,” he added.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said the move proved that Muhyiddin was “scared” to go to Parliament.

Extremely Angry King Wanted The Prime Minister’s Resignation

Muhyiddin Govt Waging War Against Agong – Extremely Angry King Wanted The Prime Minister’s Resignation

[Image: Agong-King-Sultan-Abdullah-vs-PM-Muhyiddin-Yassin.jpg]

When Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Attorney General Idrus Harun, House Speaker Azhar Harun (brother of A.G.), and leaders of allies – UMNO and PAS – met and hatched a plan to avoid a parliamentary vote on Monday (July 26), the first day the Parliament reconvened this year since the Proclamation of Emergency on January 12, they thought it would be a piece of cake.

The plan was like a school kid, who in his attempt to avoid punishments, tried to forge his parents’ signature on the report card after failing the school’s final exam. The idiot sent to do the job was de-facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan, who surprised the entire nation on Monday when he announced that the Cabinet had already revoked the emergency ordinances some five days earlier (July 21).

But unlike the school kid, who may be able to trick both his parents and class teacher, the backdoor government cannot easily forge King Sultan Abdullah’s signature and get away with it. Unlike a school report card, the revocation of the emergency ordinances must be published through something called an official gazette. There isn’t any gazette despite Takiyuddin’s claim.

Govt trying to set things right via power grab, says Rafidah
Posted by: superadmin - 07-31-2021, 04:39 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government appears to be attempting to right its wrongs by grabbing power while ignoring democratic processes and the constitutional monarchy, according to former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz.

Citing the Malay proverb “menegakkan benang yang basah”, Rafidah said the prime minister and his Cabinet were trying to set upright a “wet string”.

“In fact, the string is now so waterlogged and heavy, with all kinds of dirt and infestations, that it is impossible to straighten, let alone set it upright!”

The result, she said, was the increasing political turmoil which had tarnished the country’s image internationally.

Through it all, it has also become clear for the people to see the government’s machinations — political planning done behind the scenes, strategies to grab power, and doing whatever it takes regardless of accountability and integrity — so long as its goals or the “scheme of things” are achieved.

Domestic vaccines can offer Delta protection - China
Posted by: superadmin - 07-31-2021, 03:47 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Amid rising concerns over the COVID-19 Delta variant's spread in China, virus experts and vaccine developers reaffirmed that domestic vaccines can provide protection against the highly transmissible strain.

Shao Yiming, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said from the point of view of a virologist, observed virus mutations only carry minor and early-stage changes to the original strain and they could hardly diminish approved vaccines' role in preventing hospitalizations, severe infections and deaths.

"All COVID-19 vaccines around the world are evaluated based on their efficacy in preventing clinical disease, as well as their role in reducing serious cases and deaths," he said, adding that against these barometers, no marked difference has been found in domestic vaccines' effects on key mutations.

Shao said it is not surprising to see breakthrough infections-people who test positive after being fully immunized-because no vaccine is capable of totally preventing people from catching the virus. Such cases have been reported recently in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, which is battling a local outbreak triggered by the very infectious Delta variant.

Netizens demand truth on Fort Detrick
Posted by: superadmin - 07-31-2021, 03:42 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

More than 20 million people have signed an online letter to the World Health Organization demanding a thorough investigation into a secretive United States laboratory tainted by a poor safety record in order to gain a better understanding of the origins of the coronavirus.

Despite the loud voices of concern from China and other countries, the US government has remained silent on the possibility of a link between the Fort Detrick lab and the origin of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It has refused to disclose critical information on the pretext of national security.

The Maryland lab, which has close connections with the US military, stores the mostly deadly and infectious viruses, including Ebola, SARS and the novel coronavirus. The facility has a notorious record on lab security, the letter said. There was a leakage incident in the lab in the autumn of 2019, right before the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic.

However, detailed information had been withheld by the US on what the letter stated was the excuse of national security grounds.

In order to figure out the origins of the virus to eliminate potential hazards for human beings, Chinese netizens called on the WHO "to organize an investigation in the Fort Detrick lab and other US labs that have leakage hazards by inviting scientists including those from China, virologists and experts in lab security and chemical weapons who are independent from US geopolitical influence", the letter said.

The lab was ordered to halt essential research in July 2019 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but no detailed reasons have been offered. However, mysterious illnesses were reported right before and after the closure.

YOURSAY | Who should form interim govt if there is one?
Posted by: superadmin - 07-31-2021, 03:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Poppy: An interim government is the right solution, but it needs the participation of all the various political parties, including the opposition.

A leader that both sides of the political divide accept should be chosen to lead. Those chosen as ministers and deputies are selected according to merit and also from both sides.

They will run the administration until the Covid-19 crisis is brought under control. Only then a decision is to be made as to the date of the general election.

Umno should not lead the interim government and makes all the decisions concerning the future direction of this nation.

It will want to further its agenda to grab as many seats in the coming elections. At the same time, Umno leaders Najib Abdul Razak and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be the ones pulling the strings of the puppet they will put in the PM's chair.

OCT: There is a desperate need for the right people to form the interim government. More important is a team of experts who have the expertise in crisis management, health care, finance and economy. These are the four main sectors that need them.

All selections must be based on meritocracy and have the right credentials, not more politicians as the rakyat have seen what politicians have done to Malaysia.

There must be ownership with clear objectives, action plans and deliverables. Whoever fails to perform to expectation will be terminated immediately and not promoted as in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

This is a dire situation. Malaysia is on the brink of disaster. A bipartisan team with a vision to really help Malaysia to recover is needed. Right now, politics must take a back seat. Let the professionals do the job at warp speed.
