Malaysia's $2.4 billion mega project with China Railway falls through
Posted by: superadmin - 07-15-2021, 07:57 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR (REUTERS) - An equity deal for a planned mega project near Malaysia's capital involving the government, developer Iskandar Waterfront Holdings (IWH) and its Chinese partner will not proceed by mutual agreement, the parties said in a joint statement.

The agreement on a RM7.41 billion ringgit (S$2.4 billion) acquisition for 60 per cent equity in the Bandar Malaysia mixed commercial project by IWH and its partner China Railway Engineering Corp (CREC) lapsed on May 6 after a failure to meet conditions, the statement issued on Wednesday (July 14) said.

Bandar Malaysia was due to house the terminal for the now-scrapped high-speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The project, owned by TRX City, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance, was initially announced in 2011, cancelled in 2017 and reinstated in April, 2019.

Long Covid has more than 200 symptoms, study finds
Posted by: superadmin - 07-15-2021, 07:31 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 5157.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...5a0fdbb8ed]

The largest ever international study of people with long Covid has identified more than 200 symptoms and prompted researchers to call for a national screening programme.

The study found the myriad symptoms of long Covid – from brain fog and hallucinations to tremors and tinnitus – spanned 10 of the body’s organ systems, and a third of the symptoms continued to affect patients for at least six months.

A national screening programme would help produce a better understanding of how many people are affected and the kind of support they would need, the researchers said.

The researchers also called for the clinical guidelines for assessing patients with suspected long Covid to be widened beyond cardiovascular and lung-function tests.

Athena Akrami, a neuroscientist at University College London, and senior author of the study, said: “A lot of post-Covid clinics in the UK have focused on respiratory rehabilitation. It’s true that a lot of people have shortness of breath, but they also have a lot of other problems and types of symptoms that the clinics need to provide a more holistic approach to.”

Bush calls Afghanistan withdrawal a mistake, says consequences will be 'unbelievably bad'

[Image: 1316869032_1626253356665_1626253371476.jpg]

(CNN)Former President George W. Bush on Wednesday called the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan a mistake and predicted that the consequences, especially for Afghan women and girls, will be "unbelievably bad."

"You know, I think it is," Bush told German news outlet Deutsche Welle when asked if the withdrawal is a mistake. "I think the consequences are going to be unbelievably bad."

The 43rd President launched the war in Afghanistan -- America's longest war -- when he sent US troops to Afghanistan following the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Bush's comments are especially notable as he has typically been reluctant to criticize his successors' decision-making, and they come at a time of Taliban advancements in the country and fears of a wider security breakdown.

Bush voiced particular concern for what could happen to women and girls in Afghanistan when the US troops withdraw.

"I am afraid Afghan women and girls are going to suffer unspeakable harm," Bush said. "They are scared," he added.

MPs, netizens slam Muhyiddin over white flag snub
Posted by: superadmin - 07-15-2021, 05:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Opposition MPs and netizens have called out Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for stating that there is no need to raise white flags because the government is providing the needy with food baskets to get them through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking to reporters after visiting a food aid distribution centre in Putrajaya, Muhyiddin said “it’s okay to hang a blue flag” (in apparent reference to Perikatan Nasional’s colours) and added that he thought that “if we go to the ground, we will probably find the kitchens of homes to be full (with supplies)”.

“I think we have a delusional Prime Minister who is quite divorced from what’s happening on the ground,” said Klang MP Charles Santiago.

“I wish to remind him that there are many living in hunger, with only one meal a day in Malaysia, right now.

  Bloomberg ignores China's COVID success
Posted by: superadmin - 07-15-2021, 03:01 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

US media outlet Bloomberg has unveiled a new COVID Resilience Ranking. These ratings always come with questions, but this time it was a complete surprise as the United States was ranked at first place in terms of resistance to coronavirus. At the same time, China, whose successes in combating the pandemic are an example for the whole world, only made it to eighth place.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, commenting on this surprising ranking, called it a childish stunt, as Bloomberg removed criteria such as the number of confirmed cases and the death toll, which should be considered the most important factors. The authors of the rating also previously viewed isolation and quarantine management policies at entry and exit as negative factors.

Let's examine exactly why this ranking is so absurd. First, let's compare the statistics for July 13. They are widely available, and should not have been hard to find.

In the PRC —population 1,439,324,000 — from the beginning of the pandemic to July 13, 2021, 92,095 (0.0%) cases of COVID-19 infection were recorded, of which 4,636 (5.0%) died and 86,967 recovered (94.5%). Currently, 492 (0.5%) residents of the country are ill, and three are in critical condition.

In the US — population about 330 million — in the same period 34,766,404 cases of coronavirus infection were recorded, 29,274,349 people recovered, 623,029 died and 4,869,026 people are currently infected, 4,457 of which are in critical condition.

Comparing the numbers, it's hard not to notice China, which has four times the population of the United States, has coped with the virus much more successfully. 90 thousand cases of infection out of roughly one and a half billion people is a great accomplishment.

China's economy is still growing. But the recovery is slowing down
Posted by: superadmin - 07-15-2021, 02:38 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 210707102245-china-shipping-port-0608-re...us-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN Business)China's economy is still growing, but the pace of its recovery slowed in the second quarter as the country contended with surging commodity prices and supply chain disruptions.

GDP grew 7.9% in the April-to-June quarter compared with the same period a year ago, China's National Bureau of Statistics said Thursday.

That rate of growth was significantly slower than the 18.3% year-on-year increase China registered in the first quarter — though that record-breaking figure largely reflected how much the economy slumped in early 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic was taking hold.

The latest figure was also a bit weaker than expected. Analysts polled by Reuters predicted that China's economy would expand 8.1% in the second quarter.

"The Crown" actress told followers during a live question and answer session on Instagram: "I'm so lazy and I don't wear a bra any more. I can't wear a bra. I'm sorry, I don't care if I reach my belly button, my breasts reach my belly button, I'm not wearing a bra anymore."

The US-British actress concluded with a damning verdict of the undergarment, saying: "It's just too f**king uncomfortable."

Grassroots will punish Umno ministers supporting Muhyiddin, says Puad
Posted by: superadmin - 07-15-2021, 12:17 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: mohd-puad-zarkashi-bernama-221118-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Umno Cabinet ministers were prioritising their self-interests when they decided to continue supporting Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, says party Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

Puad said ministers and deputy ministers from Umno should not make decisions that contradicted those of the party, which withdrew its support for Muhyiddin a week ago.

He told FMT the latest development had revealed the true colours of those involved.

“They cannot claim to prioritise the rakyat because Umno’s stance was made to protect the people, a result of the prime minister’s failure in managing the economy and pandemic.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has urged Malaysians not to fall for the “kerajaan gagal” or failed government campaign against the Perikatan Nasional administration.

Bernama reported that Muhyiddin asked the people to be patient as Putrajaya manages the ongoing health and economic crises, while urging them not to believe the claims that PN failed to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.

Malaysia saw record high Covid-19 cases for two consecutive days with 11,079 infections reported on Tuesday and 11,618 yesterday.

Meanwhile, Malaysians have taken their frustrations with PN to social media on multiple occasions, coming up with slogans like “kerajaan gagal” and “kerajaan pembunuh”, among others.
