Current approach doesn’t follow the science, says Umno veep |

PETALING JAYA: The way the government has continued to manage Covid-19 after over a year of dealing with it does not reflect the scientific developments that have emerged during the course of the pandemic, Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has said.
“For example, we are still imposing a months-long lockdown despite multiple warnings against it that have been voiced out by economists, experts and the World Health Organization (WHO),” he said on Facebook.
“The international scientific community has concluded that Covid-19 is endemic, and we have to coexist with it for a long time.”
Khaled said Malaysia should be adopting policies geared towards living with the virus, an approach being considered in many European countries and even neighbouring Singapore.
“In order to realise this, mass testing must be at the forefront. We need to quickly and regularly identify positive cases before a cluster or outbreak of cases happens.
“We need to be able to segregate the ‘positive community’ from the ‘negative community’ without having to put the entire state in lockdown. It would be absurd to impose a lockdown in Seremban simply because there is an outbreak in Nilai,” he said.

The co-creator of dogecoin explains why he doesn’t plan to return to crypto: It’s ‘controlled by a powerful cartel of wealthy figures’
Jackson Palmer, the co-creator of the meme-inspired cryptocurrency dogecoin, made a rare return to Twitter on Wednesday with some harsh words about crypto in general.
“I am often asked if I will ‘return to cryptocurrency’ or begin regularly sharing my thoughts on the topic again. My answer is a wholehearted ‘no,’” Palmer tweeted on Wednesday.
In 2013, Palmer and Billy Markus created dogecoin as a joke based on the “Doge” meme, which portrays a shiba inu dog. Markus and Palmer didn’t intend for dogecoin to be taken seriously.
But the coin has recently taken off, and dogecoin is currently one of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market value. Earlier this year, it hit an all-time high of nearly 74 cents. Despite its recent surge in popularity, Markus and Palmer haven’t profited, as they both sold out before dogecoin’s meteoric rise.
In his Twitter thread, Palmer criticized those in power in the cryptocurrency space, saying that it is “controlled by a powerful cartel of wealthy figures” who “have evolved to incorporate many of the same institutions tied to the existing centralized financial system they supposedly set out to replace.”

Malaysian family infected with Covid-19 Delta variant despite staying at home since April
KUALA LUMPUR - Madam Noriah Bakar and her family have largely been in self-imposed isolation at home since April this year.
Despite this, the 36-year-old said her husband and two sons tested positive for the Delta variant of the coronavirus last week, as Malaysia struggled to contain a resurgence in Covid-19 infections in the country.
A record high of 11,618 new cases were reported on Wednesday (July 14), bringing the cumulative total so far to 867,567. On Tuesday, the country reported 11,079 new cases, the first time daily infections surpassed the five-figure mark.
"We're dumbfounded because since mid-April, my husband has only been out once to collect work documents, and I only left the house twice about three weeks ago for my vaccination appointment and to buy bread," the homemaker from Subang Jaya, in the state of Selangor, told The Straits Times.
"We rely heavily on online services for groceries despite it costing a lot of money, so we can't think of what we did wrong," she added.
Malaysia's health chief Noor Hisham Abdullah warned on Tuesday that the number of new cases could increase over the next two weeks as the highly infectious Delta variant, which can be easily transmitted by air, has been detected in almost every state.

'They're not going to f**king succeed': Top generals feared Trump would attempt a coup after election, according to new book
Washington (CNN)The top US military officer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, was so shaken that then-President Donald Trump and his allies might attempt a coup or take other dangerous or illegal measures after the November election that Milley and other top officials informally planned for different ways to stop Trump, according to excerpts of an upcoming book obtained by CNN.
The book, from Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, describes how Milley and the other Joint Chiefs discussed a plan to resign, one-by-one, rather than carry out orders from Trump that they considered to be illegal, dangerous or ill-advised.
"It was a kind of Saturday Night Massacre in reverse," Leonnig and Rucker write.
The book, "I Alone Can Fix It," scheduled to be released next Tuesday, chronicles Trump's final year as president, with a behind-the-scenes look at how senior administration officials and Trump's inner circle navigated his increasingly unhinged behavior after losing the 2020 election. The authors interviewed Trump for more than two hours.
The book recounts how for the first time in modern US history the nation's top military officer, whose role is to advise the president, was preparing for a showdown with the commander in chief because he feared a coup attempt after Trump lost the November election.
The authors explain Milley's growing concerns that personnel moves that put Trump acolytes in positions of power at the Pentagon after the November 2020 election, including the firing of Defense Secretary Mark Esper and the resignation of Attorney General William Barr, were the sign of something sinister to come.

Britney Spears gets her choice of attorney and calls for her father to be charged with conservatorship abuse
Los Angeles (CNN)A sobbing Britney Spears lashed out at her father Wednesday for the second time in less than a month, saying in a court hearing that she wants him out as the co-conservator of her estate and charged with abuse.
"I want to press charges against my father today," Spears told the court by phone, breaking down in tears at times. "I want an investigation into my dad."
Her comments Wednesday follow a hearing last month in which she told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny that her conservatorship is "abusive" and she wanted to choose her own attorney to help her bring the nearly 13-year arrangement to an end.

States can shut factories, but not for Covid-19 |

PETALING JAYA: State governments and local authorities have no power to shut factories due to Covid-19, but can do so for other reasons that come under their jurisdiction, according to an expert on local government laws.
This week, PKR’s Rafizi Ramli and DAP’s Syahredzan Johan sparred on Twitter over who is responsible for closing factories in Selangor, which have been a hotbed for infections.
Rafizi argued that the state could revoke the factories’ operating licences, but Syahredzan countered that the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act allowed Putrajaya to determine which economic sectors were essential and could operate and that local councils could revoke licences only for breaches of provisions in the licences.
Lawyer Derek Fernandez told FMT that while the Local Government Act provides these authorities the power to regulate and manage health sanitisation and control of diseases, it must not conflict with federal laws.

Warisan in driver’s seat after nation’s political stalemate, says analyst |

KOTA KINABALU: Warisan could find itself back in the political limelight both at state and federal levels after Umno retracted its support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin last week.
Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi said the question mark over Muhyiddin’s majority support has placed Warisan in a somewhat pivotal position.
Although Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin said last week his party will ensure Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) remains intact, Awang Azman said Umno will need Warisan’s help to form the next state government in the event the party does pull out of the coalition.
“This is the role that Warisan could play where it can actively shift support under the principle that there are no permanent friends and enemies in politics … the only thing that’s permanent is a political party’s interest,” he told FMT.

Wholesale prices rose 7.3% in June from a year ago for a new record surge |

- The producer price index increased 1% in June, compared to the 0.6% Dow Jones estimate.
- The measure jumped 7.3% on a year over year basis, a new record.
- Autos and auto parts comprised a large portion of the increase.
Wholesale prices for June rose more than expected in another sign that inflation is moving at a faster pace than markets had anticipated.
The producer price index, which measures what companies get for the goods they produce, increased 1% from May and jumped 7.3% on a year over year basis. That marked the second month in a row that the PPI set a record for a data series that goes back to 2010.
Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a 0.6% monthly increase.
Stripping out volatile food, energy and trade prices, the core PPI increased 0.5%, in line with estimates.
The PPI headline surge comes a day after the Labor Department reported a 5.4% year over year jump in the consumer price index, the biggest move for that measure since 2008.
The producer price index differs from the CPI in that it measures final demand prices that companies get for their goods. The CPI tracks what consumers actually pay at the register.
As with the consumer measure, the PPI traced much of its gain to surging prices related to the auto and truck industries.
Specifically, 20% of the June jump in producer prices came from a 10.5% bump in autos and auto parts retailing. Fully 70% of the increase came from trade services, which were up 2.1%.

‘Comical’ for Cabinet to show support for PM, says Zaid |

PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has described as “comical” the Cabinet’s decision to back Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as prime minister after Umno made a decision to withdraw support for the Pagoh MP.
In a tweet, Zaid said Muhyiddin should get them to declare their support “next week” (when the Dewan Rakyat is reconvened on July 26).
Zaid said, according to the law, only the support of MPs mattered and not the Cabinet.
“Comical episode in my country. PM getting ministers to express confidence and support when under siege,” he said in his posting.
Zaid was responding to the Cabinet’s joint statement today where they put up a united show of support for Muhyiddin.
“The government’s priority at this time is to make the national recovery plan a success for the people’s welfare and the nation’s prosperity, and to lead the nation out of the Covid-19 pandemic,” they said following the weekly Cabinet meeting.
Speaking to FMT later, Zaid said only ministers who were MPs could support Muhyiddin should a confidence or no-confidence motion be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Appointed senators in his Cabinet cannot vote,” he said in reference to education minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, finance minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and religious affairs minister Zulkifli Al-Bakri.
