4 reasons Parliament sitting improper, unconstitutional, says Kit Siang

PETALING JAYA: The government’s schedule for the next parliamentary sitting is improper and unconstitutional for four reasons, and the Cabinet must rectify it in its meeting tomorrow, says Lim Kit Siang.

First, the DAP veteran pointed out that the schedule did not provide for a royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who will lay out the government’s policies for the rest of the year.

Second, he said, the five-day Dewan Rakyat and three-day Dewan Negara sittings were insufficient for Parliament to debate on the royal address.

“Last year, the debate on the royal address took 15 days in the Dewan Rakyat and eight days in the Dewan Negara.

“How can a five-day meeting in the Dewan Rakyat and a three-day meeting in the Dewan Negara be adequate for the restoration of Parliament?” the Bandar Puteri MP asked in a statement.

(CNN)At least 150 people were killed by gun violence in more than 400 shootings across the country during the Fourth of July weekend as major cities nationwide confront a surge in violent crime, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive.

The data, which includes the number of shooting incidents and gun violence victims nationally over a 72-hour period from Friday through Sunday, is still evolving and will be updated.

In New York, where gun violence has been rising to levels not seen in years, there were 26 victims from 21 shootings from Friday to Sunday, a decrease from the same period last year when 30 people were shot in 25 shootings, the New York Police Department said.

Four reasons for Malaysia finishing at bottom of recovery index
Posted by: superadmin - 07-06-2021, 10:29 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: FMT-SWAB-TEST-COVID19-SCREENING-TEST-02.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Lockdowns, lack of mass testing, poor compliance with rules, and the slow rate of vaccinations are viewed by economists as the cause of Malaysia being ranked last among countries making a recovery to normal life.

Constant politicking and the lack of coordination have also thrown the government off track in the battle against Covid-19, according to economist Firdausi Suffian of Sabah UiTM.

The ranking was published last week by the Economist weekly. Malaysia finished at the bottom of a list of 50 countries ranked by their progress towards a return to normal life.

The Economist “normalcy index” measured the level of activities in travel, leisure time and commercial activity.

Firdausi and Juita Mohamad of think tank Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Isis) agreed that lockdowns had been detrimental to the country’s economy and affected the livelihood of the people.

Caregiver gets rude treatment at PPV
Posted by: superadmin - 07-06-2021, 10:25 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A woman accompanying her dependent for his vaccine appointment was left exasperated after being given a hard time at various checkpoints at a vaccination centre (PPV).

Dian Azura, 36, took to Twitter to voice her frustration after being repeatedly stopped from accompanying the dependent, her 40-year-old cousin who has a mental health condition.

She said police and Rela personnel at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur PPV had stopped her at three different checkpoints on July 4 despite showing that she was the dependent’s caregiver on the MySejahtera application.

The personnel even pushed her to explain why her cousin needed her to accompany him, thinking he did not need a chaperone because he seemed physically fine.

“According to them, anyone who looks fine physically must go by themselves. At each checkpoint, I grew more frustrated as they questioned me multiple times. But they also grew frustrated with me and, with displeasure, let me in anyway after I insisted.

Five-day Parliament sitting makes no sense, say MPs
Posted by: superadmin - 07-05-2021, 07:32 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Ahmad-Maslan-Maria-Chin-Abdullah-Charles-Santiago.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: While happy that Parliament is finally being reconvened, elected representatives are questioning why Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is only going for a five-day sitting.

In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Office said Muhyiddin will advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to call for a Dewan Rakyat sitting from July 26 to 29 and on Aug 2. Meanwhile, the Dewan Negara will sit for three days from Aug 3 to 5. The Dewan Rakyat’s last sitting was on Dec 17.

Speaking to FMT, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah said five days was simply not enough to debate the various issues since then – key among them the Emergency, which was announced on Jan 11, and the government’s Covid-19 related expenditure.

“There are so many questions that have to be answered, they just can’t brush us aside with five days of Parliament. It’s definitely not enough time,” said the PKR lawmaker.

“This is not parliamentary democracy!”

Zahid’s proposal to leave Perikatan govt snubbed

Sources: BN MPs’ meeting tonight up in the air as Zahid’s proposal to leave Perikatan govt snubbed

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s expected announcement for Barisan Nasional (BN) to sever ties with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government may not come following a failed meeting with its MPs today.

Several sources confirmed the meeting happening at the Umno headquarters today, which is being led by Zahid and convicted former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to ask support from their MPs to leave PN.

“Zahid met with BN and Umno MPs. It is related to the 14-day ultimatum that he announced on July 21.

“However it was rejected outright and many MPs said that the decision to leave PN now is not the right time,” said one source without elaborating.

Hundreds of Afghan security forces flee as districts fall to Taliban
Posted by: superadmin - 07-05-2021, 06:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 5472.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...ce1f9293ac]

The Taliban’s rapid advance through northern Afghanistan continued on Sunday with more than a dozen districts falling to the militants, as Britain entered the final days of its two-decade deployment to Afghanistan.

More than 300 members of the Afghan security forces fled across the border into Tajikistan to escape the militants, and Badakhshan and Takhar provinces are now largely under Taliban control, beyond the respective regional capitals.

There have been no public announcements about when the last British troops will fly out. Senior sources had recently said the US and British missions would end on 4 July, but after Joe Biden backed away from that date at a weekend press conference, London appeared to follow suit.

Rethink policies, practices to prepare for Covid-19 4th wave, PH tells govt
Posted by: superadmin - 07-05-2021, 02:40 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 7_SWAB_TEST_CLINIC_RAWANG_FMT_23062021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) health committee has called for an urgent re-evaluation of policies and practices to manage the high number of Covid-19 cases.

Agreeing with the Health and Sciences Covid-19 Advisory Group of Experts (EAG), the committee said a lockdown would be underpowered to mitigate the fourth wave of infections without the full utilisation of public health tools.

It said the increasing fatality rate and brought-in-dead cases, the high positivity rates and increasing number of sporadic cases were indications that the current system and processes were inadequate.

In a statement, the committee said it was important to understand the four main variables of activity rate, infectivity rate, immunity rate and infectious period.

Activity rate refers to the chances of a positive case infecting others, infectivity rate is the chance of spreading, immunity rate reflects the immune status of the population, and infectious period represents the number of days an infectious person spends in the community.

Big Cabinet, big inconsistencies, says Rafidah
Posted by: superadmin - 07-05-2021, 02:34 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former minister Rafidah Aziz has taken a swipe at the government’s “bloated” Cabinet, saying it remains incoherent in formulating and implementing policies despite its vast size.

Rafidah said there were daily instances that reflected a lack of clarity from the government, which left regular people in “suffering and despair” amid the uncertain times brought by the pandemic.

She pointed out how some farmers under lockdown were not able to harvest their produce, resulting in their crops being destroyed, and asked where the agriculture and food industries ministry was amid all this.

“Is there no monitoring of the agriculture community, such as in the highland vegetable farming areas? Yes, there were Covid-19 infections in one farm. The ministry should monitor this sector, working with the state government and state authorities.

“The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) could have stepped in to buy or arrange for the offtakes of whatever farm produce there are, and ensure they get to retailers.
