China declared officially malaria-free by WHO
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 02:52 PM - Forum: Health News - No Replies

(CNN)The World Health Organization declared China officially malaria-free on Wednesday -- making it the first country in the Western Pacific region to eliminate the life-threatening disease in more than 30 years.

Malaria, a parasitic disease transmitted through the bite of a female mosquito, kills 400,000 people a year worldwide, the majority children younger than 5, according to WHO. There is no licensed malaria vaccine on the market -- though a number of vaccine candidates are under development, and one has shown unprecedented efficacy levels in trials this year.

Malaria cases in China have been falling steeply since the turn of the century. In 2020, after reporting four consecutive years of zero indigenous cases, China applied for an official WHO certification of malaria elimination -- which was granted this week.

"Today we congratulate the people of China on ridding the country of malaria," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement on Wednesday. "Their success was hard-earned and came only after decades of targeted and sustained action. With this announcement, China joins the growing number of countries that are showing the world that a malaria-free future is a viable goal."

Change of leadership on the cards?
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 12:52 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

PETALING JAYA: The withdrawal of support by two Umno MPs for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in January raised the spectre that the Perikatan Nasional administration could fall but the declaration of emergency put this speculation to rest.

Now, there are rumblings and murmurs of changes in the corridors of power.

Nearly six months since the emergency began on Jan 12, the question over whether Muhyiddin has majority support in Parliament is looming once more.

The prospects of a prolonged emergency and delay in reconvening Parliament appear remote. The Malay rulers have made it clear that there is no need for an extension of the emergency and that Parliament must reconvene.

Observers saw the revered rulers’ views as a response to the worsening Covid-19 situation and the pleas of the rakyat over an economy in tatters.

KL’s landmark Hotel Istana to close permanently on Sept 1
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 12:29 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 ― Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur will cease operations on September 1, according to a circular from its management.

The June 30 circular, which Malay Mail verified, was signed by general manager Nooradzzudin Omar who explained that a voluntary separation scheme would be offered to affected workers.

In the circular, Noorazzudin said the management was forced to make the difficult choice to close the hotel due to the challenging economic situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic that exacerbated the stiff competition in the hospitality market.

“We have arrived at this decision after considering the present circumstances and all available options. We are left with little choice other than to proceed with this closure,” he said.

“Many of you will be aware that our competitive advantage has declined over a period of time in the face of stringent competition from our neighbouring hotels and service apartments. The situation has now been aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic which has and continues to impact our industry and its ability to achieve normality.

As hunger spreads, time for govt to raise white flag?
Posted by: superadmin - 07-01-2021, 09:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

We are in a wrong kind of Malaysia: starving families are flying white flags outside their homes, seeking food and assistance.

Sadly, Malaysia is the new face of hunger.

Unparalleled demand for food aid is on the rise and many rely on charity for food.

The fear of being unable to feed their children hangs over the days of people whose livelihoods have been snuffed out by local economies battered by lockdowns.

Periodical one-off assistance by the government has had little effect. The poverty line is bulging.

The white flag of hunger is a sure sign of rising anger against the Muhyiddin administration that has failed to get the Covid-19 crisis under control.

There will be great relief if the government instead waved the white flag. Surely, the time to admit defeat has come.

The surge in hunger comes amid an indefinite lockdown, spiralling Covid-19 infections and deaths, soaring suicide rates, and everything else that drives a nation into a state of deep depression.

(Steven Sim Twitter pic)

The very texture of our daily life is under assault, casting a morbid, sinking feeling.

Such is the temperature of unrelenting grief, that it is hard to avoid the sense the government has little appetite for the heartbreaking issue: “How am I going to put food on the table for my family?”

  #BenderaPutih: Where to get help
Posted by: superadmin - 06-30-2021, 10:14 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 205cbcd0954c1049c3b3df0a1b91642e.jpg=s660]

Launched several days ago, the “#BenderaPutih” (white flag) campaign encourages those who are struggling financially to display a white flag in front of their homes as a sign that they need immediate assistance.

Similar to last year’s “Kita Jaga Kita” initiative, this latest social media campaign comes as many strive to endure the Covid-19 lockdown, now in its fourth week and with no end in sight.

Several businesses and NGOs have since stepped forward to help feed those in need.

Below, Malaysiakini compiles a list of avenues where the needy can get aid. This is not an exhaustive list.

Covid-19 and politicians who make you sicker
Posted by: superadmin - 06-30-2021, 06:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

There’s no better description of Malaysia today than to say we are the “sick man of Asia”. Sick, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, sicker because our politicians make us sick.

Everybody knows that the science to keep the pandemic under control lies in vaccination, contact tracing, social distancing and what not. We are bombarded with these messages on TV, radio and any convincing media available. But the reality is different.

Billions have already been allocated to the vaccination programme but we still hear a lot of complaints that those who registered as far back as February have still yet to get their appointment.

At the rate we are going, we will never reach the 4,000 case target to enter the second phase of the lockdown, and Muhyiddin Yassin will become the longest prime minister in office, beating Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s record.

Give each household RM1,500 monthly before more fall under poverty line

Give each household RM1,500 monthly before more fall under poverty line, Anwar tells Putrajaya

[Image: lulu_hypermarket_mco_3.0_shop_1806_(1).JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 ― The federal government should provide a direct cash injection of RM1,500 per month to all struggling households or more will risk falling below the poverty line, PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

The former finance minister said the financial packages announced by Putrajaya are not effective enough and despite the prolonged movement control order (MCO) the Covid-19 pandemic is continuing to decimate peoples livelihoods.

“I suggest that for as long as this MCO is in effect we cannot make do with periodical one-off aids. What the people need is money to spend, not to repay loans or rent, which is where the current packages announced by the government falls very short.

“What’s needed is a direct cash injection of RM1,500 to households that are suffering so they can buy food and feed their kids. So many people are falling into the poverty line that it’s no more B40 but B60 now,” Anwar said in a virtual press conference.

  The King’s third gentle reminder
Posted by: superadmin - 06-30-2021, 04:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Hafiz Hassan

The Federal Constitution is the “supreme law of the Federation”, the highest law of the land, the law of laws.

According to law expert Shad Saleem Faruqi, the constitution creates the various organs of the state; describes and delimits their powers and functions; and prescribes rules about their relationship with each other and with the citizens.

So, the constitution creates a “supreme head of the Federation” – the Yang di-Pertuan Agong – and a “deputy supreme head of the Federation” – the Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

It then creates a Majlis Raja-Raja (Conference of Rulers), which may deliberate on questions of national policy and “any other matter that it thinks fit”.

Having created all of the above [Articles 32(1), 33(1) and 38(1)], the constitution declares that “the executive authority of the Federation shall be vested in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong” exercisable by His Majesty or by the Cabinet [Article 39].

China is facing its worst power shortage in a decade. That's a problem for the whole

China is facing its worst power shortage in a decade. That's a problem for the whole world

Hong Kong (CNN Business)China is in the middle of a huge power crunch as extreme weather, surging demand for energy and strict limits on coal usage deliver a triple blow to the nation's electricity grid. It's a problem that could last for months, straining the country's economic recovery and weighing on global trade.

Nearly a dozen Chinese provinces have said they are facing a power crunch in recent weeks, including some of the country's most important engines for economic growth.

Guangdong province — a manufacturing center responsible for $1.7 trillion, or more than 10%, of China's annual economic output and a bigger share of its foreign trade — has been rationing power for over a month. The restrictions have forced companies across the province to shut down for a few days per week. Some local authorities are warning that power rationing could last through the end of the year.

It's not just Guangdong. At least nine provinces have said they are dealing with similar issues, including Yunnan, Guangxi and the manufacturing hub of Zhejiang, forcing regional authorities to announce power curbs across an area of China the size of the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan combined.

Windows 11 will look different from what you’re used to

Windows 11 will look different from what you’re used to — here are some of the biggest changes
  • Microsoft released its first test build of Windows 11 on Monday.
  • It’s missing big things that the company promised, including Android app support.
  • But there are notable changes to the way Windows works.

[Image: 106904379-1625005274742-start_menu.png?v=1625005816]

With Windows 11, Microsoft is introducing modern touches to the experience of using a PC.

Most noticeably, a new design is meant to help users more quickly get what they’re looking for. The changes go beyond the surface, though. Microsoft is changing the rules of its app store to bring more variety and even bring Android apps to the PC, and adding enhancements that promise to boost gaming. New touchscreen controls and a better way to configure windows on screen might make it easy to sit in front of the computer for long periods.

Much is on the line. Windows is central to Microsoft, as companies use it for their employees’ devices and consumers use it for entertainment. The current version, Windows 10, is the top PC operating system in the world, and the company doesn’t want to lose that leadership position as it faces competition from the likes of Apple and Google.
