SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The number of people stopped from buying guns through the U.S. background check system hit an all-time high of more than 300,000 last year amid a surge of firearm sales, according to new records obtained by the group Everytown for Gun Safety.
The FBI numbers provided to The Associated Press show the background checks blocked nearly twice as many gun sales in 2020 as in the year before. About 42% of those denials were because the would-be buyers had felony convictions on their records.
The increase in blocked gun sales largely tracks with the record-setting surge in sales that took hold along with the coronavirus pandemic and has continued into this year, through historic demonstrations against police brutality, deep political divisions and an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

'Heartbreaking' conditions in US migrant child camp |

At a US border detention centre in the Texan desert, migrant children have been living in alarming conditions - where disease is rampant, food can be dangerous and there are reports of sexual abuse, an investigation by the BBC has found through interviews with staff and children.
In recent months, the US has seen a massive rise in migrants and asylum seekers from Central America. Violence, natural disasters and pandemic-related economic strife are some of the reasons behind the influx, experts say.
Some have also suggested the perception of a more lenient administration under Democrat Joe Biden has contributed to the crisis, though the White House has urged migrants against journeying to the US border.
The tented camp in the Fort Bliss military base in El Paso, Texas, is the temporary home for over 2,000 teenaged children who have crossed the US-Mexico border alone and are now awaiting reunification with family in the US.
Findings from the BBC's investigation include allegations of sexual abuse, Covid and lice outbreaks, a child waiting hours for medical attention, a lack of clean clothes and hungry children being served undercooked meat.
The BBC has spoken to camp employees about these conditions and seen photos and video smuggled out by staff.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi has today chastised his party colleague Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim for criticising the party’s ultimatum in demanding for Parliament to reconvene within two weeks.
Mohd Puad said, while it was common knowledge that the Dewan Rakyat Speaker needed to provide a 28-day notice to convene Parliament according to Standing Order 11(2), he pointed out that the Dewan Rakyat Speaker can do away with the 28-day notice in cases that are deemed to be “of urgency” under Standing Order 9(2)(a) and 11(3).
This comes after Shahidan took a veiled jab at Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after the latter issued the government an ultimatum to reconvene Parliament within 14 days of June 21.

Pyroluria – A Hidden Cause of Addictions, ADHD, Anxiety and Other Afflictions |

Pyrrole disorder or pyroluria is a genetic condition in which an individual produces an abnormally large number of pyrroles. Affected individuals may have 5 – 10 times more pyrroles than are usually produced. Normally excreted in the urine, a pyrrole is a byproduct of hemoglobin synthesis and has no known function in the body.
Hemoglobin, of course, is the molecule that carries oxygen in blood. Pyrroles have an affinity for aldehydes including vitamin B6 and zinc, binding to them in large numbers. They are then excreted in the urine, meaning that the zinc and vitamin B6 nutrients are no longer available for their usual biological roles.
Relapse rates for alcoholism and other addictions are staggering. Likewise, rates of recurrence for common psychiatric disorders – including anxiety, ADHD, and depression – remain high despite aggressive treatments with modern prescription medications. These dire statistics stem from a glaring limitation of contemporary medicine: treatment focuses solely on downstream symptom relief while ignoring upstream root causes of the symptoms in question. One of the more common upstream sources of myriad psychiatric conditions is Pyroluria.
People with pyroluria have been found to have exceptionally low levels of both vitamin B6 and zinc. Deficiencies of these important nutrients have been linked to a wide range of emotional and psychiatric issues including anxiety, irritability, depression, and short-term memory problems. In addition, pyroluria is often seen in children who have been previously diagnosed with conditions characterized by poor responses to stress, behavioral disorders, learning disorders, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders. Zinc deficiencies have been associated with physiological disorders as well: poor immune function, poor growth, and delayed puberty.
Symptoms characteristic of pyroluria:- anxiety
- irritability
- fatigue
- poor short-term memory
- little or no dream recall
- mood swings
- increased sensitivity to lights, sounds, odors
- frequent infections
- allergies
- joint pain
- hypoglycemia
- poor appetite, especially in the morning
- nausea, motion sickness
- poor tolerance of dietary protein
- sweet or fruity smelling breath or sweat
- pale complexion
- white spots on fingernails
- premature graying
- delayed sexual development
- alcoholism
Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for successful outcomes but unfortunately, the wide range and disparate nature of symptoms contributes to frequent misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. The gold standard test for diagnosing pyroluria is a urine test that measures kryptopyroles:

Don’t ‘beautify’ security threats: HK leader Carrie Lam responds to criticism about Apple Daily raid
HONG KONG - Chief Executive Carrie Lam responded on Tuesday (June 22) to criticism of the government’s actions against pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily, calling it an attempt to “beautify” acts endangering national security.
The Hong Kong leader also said she may not be able to legislate Article 23 of the Basic Law, or Hong Kong’s mini-Constitution, in her term as leader.
“I still have about a year or so in my term. I don’t think we have the ability to complete before the end of the term,” said Mrs Lam at the weekly briefing ahead of the executive council meeting on Tuesday.

To our leaders: Can we trust you? |

In my years of doing business, I have had my fair share of failures. When it happened, I told myself that there is no shame in this if I learnt a lesson. I picked myself up, brushed myself off, and carried on.
But once, I had a crooked foreign partner who absconded. I lost all my savings and was in debt for two years after. Ironically, this was the only partner who started every sentence with the prefix: “…believe me, Shankar!”
Now, isn’t this a little bit like our leaders at the moment?
After 15 months of movement restrictions, Malaysia still finds itself thick in the throes of this pandemic. While other countries control the catastrophe, we create plan after plan to sort things out, but to no avail.

PAS supremo is fast making the Islamic party irrelevant |

By Moaz Nair
Using religion to hoodwink the masses is common when religion is politicised. While the situations may differ, one thing remains the same: religion is often used as an excuse to discriminate against others. Instances of institutions and politicians claiming a right to discriminate in the name of religion are too common.
In a post on social media, the supremo of the Islamic party started quoting the Prophet and demanding that action be taken against “plotters”, describing them as holding an extreme attitude towards Islam and its leaders who he said must be “defended by the command of Allah”.
Unfortunately, he fell short of referring to or giving any real examples of the “extreme attitude” of the plotters to support the allegation. This simply shows an element of desperation on his part to justify his stand as a political leader.
PAS supremo cherry-picks religious verses
The PAS supremo fails to understand that what is meant by governance in Islam is that it should emphasise justice in a plural society and make the struggle for the unification of the people irrespective of their race or religion.
Regrettably, the PAS supremo is fond of cherry-picking religious verses and citing new religious propositions in a manner capable of inciting racial tension. He has become so frantic that he has to use this approach for the fading party to stay relevant.

Drinking coffee may cut risk of chronic liver disease, study suggests |

From espresso to instant, coffee is part of the daily routine for millions. Now research suggests the brew could be linked to a lower chance of developing or dying from chronic liver disease.
Chronic liver disease is a major health problem around the world. According to the British Liver Trust, liver disease is the third leading cause of premature death in the UK, with deaths having risen 400% since 1970.
The new study is the latest to suggest drinking coffee could bring benefits, with previous work suggesting it may help stave off liver cancer, and reduce the risk of alcohol-related liver disease.
“It confirms in a large UK cohort that coffee drinking is protective against severe liver disease,” said Prof Paul Roderick, a co-author of the study from the University of Southampton.
