The Ngee Ann Poly Chinese lecturer filmed making racist remarks to a man of Indian descent about his “preying on a Chinese girl” in Singapore has exposed the embarrassing racism of some members of the Chinese community.
As an ethnic Chinese, I felt angry that this racist bigot could feel so confident as to utter such rubbish about how people should keep to their own “race”. Is it because ethnic Chinese are the majority in Singapore?
Well, this video has circulated widely in Malaysia and elsewhere as well and it certainly does not help the image of the Chinese anywhere in the world.
In the old days, such racists, when confronted, would sometimes deny their behaviour but today, there is no escaping social media when such videos go viral.
In the same way, when just one racist manager from mainland China was filmed making racist remarks about Africans in Africa and the video went viral, it tarnished the reputation of the republic which had been trying so hard to win over the hearts of the African people.

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s political bureau is expected to hold an emergency meeting tonight to discuss follow-up measures after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers said that Parliament should reconvene immediately.
A source told FMT that the meeting is scheduled for 8pm at the Putra World Trade Centre and will be attended by some of the party’s top leaders with strict SOPs compliance.
“The political bureau meeting will be at 8pm tonight. Let them (Umno leaders) decide on the next step,” the source said.
Yesterday, Umno Youth said it would urge the party’s Supreme Council to take strict action if the government fails to convene Parliament soon.

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s statement yesterday asking young voters not to be “fooled a second time” by allowing Pakatan Harapan (PH) to return to power smacks of nothing but racism and bigotry, says DAP.
Its secretary-general, Lim Guan Eng, said this was a desperate attempt to try and rally the youths to support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
In a statement yesterday, Hadi claimed that PH had revealed its “extreme attitude” towards Islam and its leaders just days after it won the last general election in 2018. However, he did not give examples or instances of this happening.

A RECENT survey by a global firm showed that while certain nations may see a decline in healthcare costs, several others may also see a spike in the future.
As for Malaysia, this year’s rate will be carried across next year, which is 14%.
The report, entitled Aon’s 2021 Global Medical Trend Reports, also showed that Malaysia’s healthcare cost is one of the highest in the region.
In an email to FocusM, Aon Head of Wellbeing Solutions (South Asia and Aon Care) Dr Amitabh Deka said Malaysia has seen a rise in medical inflation in recent years, due to certain determinants.
“On average, the Gross Medical Inflation for Malaysia was 15.3% in 2018, 16.1% in 2019 and 14% this year.
“In terms of demand, with an ageing population, the utilisation of healthcare services has increased in families. Ageing not just leads to higher vulnerability to diseases but also to higher incidences of co-morbidities (more than one disease conditions existing together).

PETALING JAYA: PKR has decided to revive its religious affairs bureau in a bid to project alternative views on Islam each time such matters are raised in public.
In announcing this at the party’s congress today, its secretary-general, Saifuddin Nasution, cited a statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who had used a religious slant asking young Malaysians not to make the same “mistake” by voting in Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the next elections (GE15).
“We hope the bureau will respond and give alternative views to various religious issues in regard to current developments.
“For example, the PAS president warned people to be careful yesterday when voting in GE15. This statement needs to be clarified to the people in terms of the party’s stance,” Saifuddin said at the party’s 15th national congress held virtually.
He said the central leadership had decided this on May 1, adding that it will be led by Amidi Abdul Manan. He hoped the committee will be able to revive and mobilise this bureau smoothly and convey the party’s stand on religious matters promptly and effectively.
Yesterday, Hadi had warned the younger generation of voters against “being fooled a second time” by allowing PH to return to power.

PETALING JAYA: PKR must do all that it can to bring about systemic change, says party president Anwar Ibrahim.
Taking a swipe at the Perikatan Nasional administration during his speech at the party’s 15th national congress today, Anwar reminded all delegates that politics should not be an elite game to wrestle power.
“We must seek to represent the people’s aspirations, otherwise we are no different from the traitors,” he told the congress, held online.
Anwar also said the party must return to the principle of good governance, adding that it must continue to reject corruption and any abuse of power.
This was different from the current leadership which, he said, did not understand the people’s problems on the ground.
According to him, one of the government’s biggest failures was procuring an insufficient supply for vaccines and providing inadequate testing for Covid-19.

KUALA LUMPUR: National women’s singles player S Kisona won the 2021 Spanish International badminton tournament title last night, beating compatriot Goh Jin Wei in La Nucia.
The 2019 SEA Games champion bettered the two-time Junior World Champion Jin Wei to secure a 21-14, 21-19 win in the final after 31 minutes.
It was Kisona’s second win against Jin Wei, after having triumphed over the Penangite in the 2018 Thailand Masters.
Earlier, in the semifinals, Kisona outclassed French player Yaelle Hoyaux 21-18, 21-10, while Jin Wei eliminated fellow Malaysian Eoon Qi Xuan 21-17, 21-11, according to the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) official website.

HONG KONG (REUTERS, BLOOMBERG) - People who are vaccinated against Covid-19 with BioNTech’s vaccine were found to have "substantially higher" levels of antibodies than those who received Sinovac’s jab, the South China Morning Post reported on Saturday (June 19), citing a Hong Kong study.
Some who received the Sinovac vaccine might need a third booster shot as well, the newspaper said, citing lead researcher Benjamin Cowling, an epidemiologist with the University of Hong Kong (HKU).
The government-commissioned study was conducted by HKU’s school of public health and involved tracking the antibody responses of 1,000 people who received either vaccine, the report added.

Malaysian Bar: Lawyer’s purported suggestion that court decisions can be influenced is disgraceful, unethical, misconduct
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — The Malaysian Bar today did not mince its words about a lawyer’s purported action of suggesting that court decisions can be influenced, saying that this would be a misconduct if the lawyer was proven to actually have made such suggestions.
Malaysian Bar president AG Kalidas cited a June 15 news report by portal Free Malaysia Today, where the Chief Justice’s Office was reported to have lodged a police report on June 7 against a senior lawyer for allegedly bringing the judiciary into disrepute.
Free Malaysia Today had cited sources in saying that the lawyer had allegedly sent a few text messages to a client in relation to two cases pending in court.
Saying that the Malaysian Bar was deeply troubled by such news, Kalidas said such “purported conduct as reported is disgraceful and unbecoming of a member of the legal community”.
