Serbian volleyball player suspended after making anti-Asian racist gesture during match against Thailand
(CNN)A Serbian volleyball player has been suspended for two matches after she was caught on camera stretching her eyelids -- a racist gesture used to mock people with Asian heritage -- during an international competition between Serbia and Thailand.
Sanja Djurdjevic violated the sport's disciplinary rules on June 1 while competing in the match in Italy, according to a statement given Tuesday from the FIVB Disciplinary Panel Sub-Committee.
In addition to the suspension, the independent body, which is responsible for imposing disciplinary sanctions within FIVB competitions, fined Serbia's volleyball federation the equivalent of $22,000. According to the panel, the FIVB will donate the money to a cause dedicated to tackling discriminatory behavior and/or to fund educational programs on cultural sensitivity.

A study across six countries involving frontliners shows that a plant-based diet can help lower the odds of developing moderate to severe Covid-19 infection.
Researchers found that a plant-based diet may lessen the severity of Covid-19 infection by 73%. The same study, published in the online journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health, suggests that a plant-based diet with fish included could lower the severity by 59%.
They define plant-based diets as “dietary patterns that are high in plant foods and low in animal products”.
The researchers, led by Dr Sara B Seidelmann of Stamford Hospital, Greenwich, US, wanted to find out if and how diet affects the disease.
They drew on a survey of 2,884 frontline doctors and nurses with extensive exposure to SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19 infection, working in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US. It was based on a 47-item food frequency (over the past year) questionnaire and the severity of any Covid-19 infections they had had. Men outnumbered women in the study.Using 568 Covid-19 cases and 2,316 controls, they found that 138 of the 568 cases had moderate-to-severe Covid-19 severity while 430 had very mild to mild severity.

PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s summoning of political party leaders and the convening of a special rulers’ meeting highlight a “tale of wisdom and weakness” in the country today, says a political analyst.
For Jeniri Amir, the monarchy is displaying “wisdom” in taking an inclusive approach to addressing concerns over the handling of the Covid-19 situation.
“The fact that the King has summoned political party leaders, including members of the opposition, highlights His Majesty’s deep concern for the situation,” he said.
Jeniri said it was “rare” for the monarchy to get directly involved in matters of the state, though it was not the first time under the present administration.

- China’s producer price index, a measure of production costs, rose 9% in May from a year ago, the fastest since September 2008, data released Wednesday showed.
- More pessimistic businesses expect the price increases will last until the end of the year, said Gan Jie, a professor of finance at the Beijing-based Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.
- In the last several weeks, the central Chinese government has announced additional support for small businesses, particularly those affected by rising raw material prices.
BEIJING — China’s producer price index rose 9% in May from a year ago as commodity prices surged, the National Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday.
That marked the fastest increase in production costs since September 2008, when the index rose 9.13%, according to Wind Information.
While the gains surpassed expectations of an 8.5% increase, according to a Reuters poll, the rise does come off a low base. The index fell 3.7% in May 2020 during the initial months of the coronavirus pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, is well informed about claims that the government is not handling the Covid-19 pandemic well, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said after his audience with the King.
“I gave my opinion, not just representing the party but that of the rakyat,” he said when asked whether he had raised concerns about the government’s mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Tuanku understands and we leave it to his wisdom.”
The former finance minister, who spent around 80 minutes at Istana Negara today, said his discussions with the King focused mostly on the economy, Covid-19 and the need for aid for sections of the rakyat.

PETALING JAYA: Pundits are hoping the meetings between the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and political party leaders that start today will result in a stable government ruling the country as the nation battles with the surge in Covid-19 cases and economic despair.
Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the day started with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin meeting the King, which is the norm before the weekly Cabinet meeting every Wednesday.
But this time, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, DAP’s Lim Guan Eng and Pejuang’s Dr Mahathir Mohamad have also been granted an audience by the King.
“It shows there are efforts by the palace to look into and settle problems faced by the rakyat,” he told FMT.

Malaysia’s UM slides to 65th spot globally in QS world university rankings; Taylor’s, UCSI, UTP, UUM, Sunway climb higher
KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Malaysia’s oldest and leading university Universiti Malaya (UM) fell to the 65th spot in the latest annual university rankings by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, but at the same time held firm to its status as one of the top 100 universities in the world.
In the QS World University Rankings 2022 released today, a total of 1,300 universities located in 97 locations globally were surveyed, including 22 Malaysian universities (21 existing participating universities and with Universiti Kuala Lumpur as the new entry in the 801-1,000 rank category).
As a whole, the QS rankings saw more than half or 12 of the 22 Malaysian universities as having recorded declines in their ranking, including UM which went down by six rungs from its record best of 59th spot last year to the 65th spot in this year’s rankings. QS noted that the 65th spot is UM’s second-best performance in the rankings’ history.
