Where’s the mass testing, asks Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 06-07-2021, 08:27 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government must explain why mass testing has not yet been implemented and why the number of tests conducted daily has remained low, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has said.

Citing data from the past week, he said tests ranged from a low of 89,227 on May 31 and a peak at 105,293 on June 4, with a positivity rate around 7%. The figures suggested that a high number of cases going undetected, he said.

Malaysia should almost triple the daily testing rate to meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 10 to 30 tests per confirmed Covid-19 case, he said.

He questioned what rationale was behind not ramping up testing efforts, and suggested it could be to conceal the government’s poor management of the pandemic.

Police: Jog only within your own neighbourhood or face fines for going beyond the boundary during ‘total lockdown’

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — Joggers are only allowed to move within their residential neighbourhood during the total lockdown phase of the movement control order, a senior police official said today.

Those caught jogging beyond the boundaries of this residential neighbourhood will be fined, Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said.

“If the residential address is beyond the neighbourhood or residential area, then an offence has been committed and legal action can be taken under Regulation 17 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within Infected Local Areas) (No. 2) 2021,” he said in a statement here.

He added that enforcement officers have been authorised to ask members of the public to show proof they live in a particular area, including checking their identification cards.

Billionaire speaks out after attacks on Asian Americans

'I've been completely disenchanted.' Billionaire speaks out after attacks on Asian Americans

[Image: 210331183757-patrick-soon-shiong-file-re...ge-169.jpg]

New York (CNN Business)Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, is urging America to admit it has a racism problem.

"This unconscious bias and racism is pervasive. It's almost inherent, sadly, in the historic fabric of this country," Soon-Shiong, the founder and executive chairman of biotech company ImmunityBio, told CNN Business in his first public comments about the surge of anti-Asian hostilities.

"We have to recognize that, accept it and then break it."

Soon-Shiong, who is of Chinese descent and was born in South Africa, expressed dismay at the recent spike in hate crimes against Asian Americans as well as the racial tensions that fueled the Black Lives Matter movement.

"I came from South Africa, where I saw [racism] growing up. The difference, in a funny way, is that it was Apartheid, but it was Apartheid in the open," said Soon-Shiong, who moved to the United States in 1977. "I thought we were coming to the land of the free. And frankly, I've been completely disenchanted."

The comments make Soon-Shiong one of the highest-profile Asian business leaders to speak out about the recent attacks on Asian Americans. And he urged more Asian Americans to do the same.

"Unfortunately, the Asian culture and mentality is to just suck it up. Do your work. Do your thing. Be quiet," Soon-Shiong said. "I don't think that can happen any longer."

Varsities supposed to broaden minds, critics say after Ramli Ibrahim talk debacle
Posted by: superadmin - 06-07-2021, 01:18 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An academic and an educationist have criticised Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for cancelling a talk by classical dancer Ramli Ibrahim, saying universities are meant to help students broaden their minds.

On Saturday, UTM confirmed it had cancelled Ramli’s talk on how dance transcended race on the advice of its Islamic centre, as the university did not want to “offend any party”.

Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi of UCSI University wondered who exactly UTM had assumed the talk would offend.

He said Hindus would be appreciative that a person of a different culture and religion treasured their art. And this would go a long way when it comes to nation-building.

Essential or not? Restaurant owners boiling mad with Miti
Posted by: superadmin - 06-07-2021, 12:46 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Restaurateurs and food suppliers are boiling mad over the confusion on businesses regarded as essential services, and with the process of obtaining approval from the international trade and industry ministry (Miti).

The last-minute policy flip-flops and confusion over the definitions and criteria of essential business sectors have been nothing short of frustrating, they say.

Richard Nah, who supplies fruits to wholesalers in Selayang and most major supermarkets in the Klang Valley, said he had yet to receive approval from Miti despite directly being in the food supply chain.

He questioned how approvals under Miti are made considering certain essential businesses were granted approvals and others were not, despite falling under the same sector.

Flood of hate mail for woman who posted about Kedah MB
Posted by: superadmin - 06-07-2021, 12:42 PM - Forum: Local News - Replies (2)

GEORGE TOWN: A woman who took photos of the Kedah menteri besar and his two aides in what appeared to be a test drive on Saturday said she has been under attack by supporters of the menteri besar, ranging from religious teachers to those with political links.

Nini Siron, 36, said personal details of her family had been circulated, including photos of her husband, her son and her sister spread widely by those accusing her of fabricating the incident.

She had posted an account of a man resembling menteri besar Sanusi Md Nor apparently on a test drive of a new car, an activity forbidden under lockdown rules.

An aide to Sanusi has since denied that such a test drive had taken place and said the entourage had merely stopped to take a look at a car Sanusi chanced upon while stopping to buy a takeaway on his way to Kuala Lumpur.
