KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — Five medical workers in white protective gear battle to resuscitate a coronavirus patient in a quarantine centre on the edge of the Malaysian capital, but eventually fail.
The struggle, caught in a minute-long video clip on social media, exemplifies for many Malaysians their government’s latest misstep in its efforts to combat the pandemic, as daily infections and deaths hit a record high in the past week.
“Our boat is sinking. The captain is out of touch,” one Twitter user commented on last weekend’s video that used the hashtag #KerajaanGagal, or “failed government”, which has been employed for weeks by Malaysians to voice their anger.
Despite a state of emergency imposed in January, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s government has been seen as struggling to rein in the infections, triggering public fury.

Khairy says okay for states to get direct donations of Covid-19 vaccines so long as ‘genuine, legitimate’
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — The direct supply of Covid-19 vaccines to states by interested sponsors does not have to go through the federal government, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today.
He clarified that vaccine supplies through Putrajaya is just one of the options available, and that state governments could source their own as long as they are approved by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).
“So for instance, there are state governments that want to receive a donation and they are donations that are genuine, that are legitimate, that when we checked with the vaccine producer they know about it, then there is no restriction for any state governments to receive any donations,” he said during the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force’s (CITF) virtual press conference this afternoon.

KUALA LUMPUR: Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah urged the public to prepare for the worst in facing the Covid-19 wave following an exponential trend indicated by the Covid-19 graph in this country.
“The rise in cases started from April 1 and could trigger a vertical surge. We need to prepare for the worst. Please help us by staying at home.
“Only by doing this can we break the chain of infection,” he said on Twitter today.
He advised the public to comply strictly with the SOPs in case of an emergency or having to attend work.
Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 6,509 new Covid-19 cases and reported its highest daily death toll from the viral infection after 61 fatalities were recorded.

There were at least 12 mass shootings between Friday night and Sunday, according to CNN reporting and an analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), local media and police reports.
The shootings took place across eight states -- Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas and Minnesota.
CNN defines a mass shooting as an incident with four or more people killed or wounded by gunfire -- excluding the shooter.
So far this year, more than 7,500 people have died from gun violence across the US, according to the GVA. There's also been a 23% uptick in deaths from gun violence this year, the archive said.
Here's a look at the shootings that took place over the weekend.

Hitting Penang water wasters in the wallet |

GEORGE TOWN: A newly proposed water rate increase in Penang has received support from key interest groups, saying it would force Penangites to use less water.
The state’s water use per capita per day is nearly 300 litres per day while the national average is 240.
An expert said Penangites who use a reasonable amount of water can expect to pay a bit more, but water wasters will be severely punished with an increase of close to RM110 on their current bills.
The increase is part of a proposed water tariff review by the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) to ensure water security by 2050 and to reduce water wastage. Penangites enjoy the lowest water bills in the country, averaging RM5.55 for domestic users.
