PETALING JAYA: With Covid-19 cases surging, there is a push by some ministers for the emergency to be extended beyond August, according to a source in the know.
However, others want the emergency to end in August as they fear the people will punish them in the next general election if it continues.
One source told FMT those for the extension felt the emergency should cover all three phases under the lockdown announced recently to fight the surge in Covid-19 cases.
Putrajaya had recently announced that there would be three phases under the total lockdown which began on June 1. The first phase involves full closure of social and non-essential economic sectors.

PETALING JAYA: A call has gone out to PKR members to set up more branches and get people to join its women’s wing to win the 15th general election.
PKR advisory council chairman Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail noted that the party’s membership had increased gradually since its establishment 22 years ago and this showed the party remained relevant in the political arena.
Officiating the 15th PKR national congress today, the former deputy prime minister said the party had 2,028 branches nationwide.
She also said she hoped to see more women candidates taking part in GE15.

Russia to consider ditching dollar-denominated oil contracts if faced with more U.S. sanctions
- “Well, ideally we would prefer not to move away from the dollar as it is an international currency used for settlements,” Novak told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, according to a translation.
- “But if our American partners create this type of situation we shall have no other choice but gradually do that,” he added.
- It comes ahead of a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden later this month.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on Thursday said the oil and gas-rich country may soon be tempted to move away from U.S. dollar-denominated crude contracts if President Joe Biden’s administration continues to impose targeted economic sanctions.
“Well, ideally we would prefer not to move away from the dollar as it is an international currency used for settlements,” Novak told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, according to a translation.
“But if our American partners create this type of situation we shall have no other choice but gradually do that,” he added.
His comments come shortly after Russia announced it would completely remove U.S. dollar assets from its National Wealth Fund.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has called for the party to reconsider its ties with PAS in Muafakat Nasional (MN) as cracks between the two largest Malay parties, which got together in 2019 as a pact to dethrone Pakatan Harapan (PH), have surfaced recently.
The latest episode involving the planned sale of prime property belonging to cash-rich Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) which is under the jurisdiction of PAS minister Khairuddin Aman Razali, saw him trading barbs with Umno MP Ahmad Nazlan Idris, who was the board’s former chairman.
Johor Umno deputy head Nur Jazlan Mohamed said PAS will most likely be a liability in the next general election (GE15) if the parties cooperated, going by recent actions by some of its leaders which he feels have exposed the other side of PAS.
“Umno has always been suspicious of PAS leaders as they now seem to be more interested in power and position and, in some cases, money too. And in the current episode involving Lembaga Getah Malaysia (MRB), there are some serious allegations,” he told FMT.
Yesterday, Khairuddin, the plantation industries and commodities minister, claimed that some Umno leaders were attacking him over the MRB controversy.

A BBC investigation has revealed widespread allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in the Afghan Police Force.
After months of research, the BBC has spoken to a number of women who say they were raped or assaulted by their superiors or colleagues. Human rights groups say the majority of the attacks go unreported.
Momena waived her anonymity to talk to the BBC about what happened to her. She is still working as a policewoman, although she has changed departments.
Hosna Jalil is no longer Deputy Interior Minister. She says she believes she was removed because she had been "a loud voice".
This report from the BBC’s Kawoon Khamoosh is part of the documentary Policing the Police in Afghanistan.

| Trump’s grip on GOP sparks fears about democratic process |

Seven months after Election Day, former President Donald Trump’s supporters are still auditing ballots in Arizona’s largest county and may revive legislation that would make it easier for judges in Texas to overturn election results.
In Georgia, meanwhile, the Republican-controlled state legislature passed a bill allowing it to appoint a board that can replace election officials. Trump loyalists who falsely insist he won the 2020 election are running for top election offices in several swing states. And after a pro-Trump mob staged a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol to halt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory, Republicans banded together to block an independent investigation of the riot, shielding Trump from additional scrutiny of one of the darkest days of his administration.
To democracy advocates, Democrats and others, the persistence of the GOP’s election denial shows how the Republican Party is increasingly open to bucking democratic norms, particularly the bipartisan respect traditionally afforded to election results even after a bitter campaign. That’s raising the prospect that if the GOP gains power in next year’s midterms, the party may take the extraordinary step of refusing to certify future elections.

The evidence is everywhere.
CNN's Dana Bash reported Thursday morning that former President Donald Trump is "more obsessed than ever with the 2020 election," with one former Trump aide telling her that the former President is only listening to "the bottom of the bottom of the crazies in the barrel."
That follows on reporting from The New York Times and The Washington Post that Trump is convinced that he will, at some point this summer, be reinstated as president once a variety of kooky and non-credible audits come to, uh, fruition.
"Trump has become so fixated on the audits that he suggested recently to allies that their success could result in his return to the White House this year, according to people familiar with comments he has made," wrote the Post.
Trump himself has been sending out a slew of statements on the topic -- blasting Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, both Republicans, for not doing more to support the ridiculous recount in Maricopa County. And on Monday, Trump blasted this out: "Great work is being done in Georgia revealing the Election Fraud of the 2020 Presidential Election. But, we must not allow ANYONE to compromise these ballots by leaving the building unsecured, which was done late Friday. Republicans and Patriots must protect this site and the Absentee Ballots." (For more on the situation with Georgia's absentee ballots, read this.)
