Khairy: AstraZeneca dropped from Covid-19 vaccine programme, now only for those who want it
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — The government will not include the controversial AstraZeneca vaccine under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP), coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced today.
In a joint press conference with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba today, Khairy said the vaccine would instead be given through dedicated vaccination centres (PPV), on a first-come-first-served basis, to those who want to take the vaccine voluntarily.
He said the decision was taken to avoid disrupting the ongoing immunisation programme but reiterated that theAstraZeneca vaccine was safe.

KUALA LUMPUR: A leading maritime lawyer has called for honesty about Malaysia’s capabilities as the government moves to address the controversy surrounding its cabotage policy.
Sitpah Selvaratnam, who co-chairs the Malaysian Bar Council’s Shipping and Admiralty Law Committee, said the government needed to be frank with itself in assessing those capabilities.
As FMT reported last week, the revocation of the cabotage exemption for submarine cable repairs has received vocal criticism from tech giants and politicians alike. They are blaming it for Malaysia’s loss to neighbouring countries of a number of high value investments.
The Cabinet is expected to discuss the matter at its meeting today.

PETALING JAYA: Negative reports, incomplete understanding of the AstraZeneca vaccine and fear may turn away some elderly folk from being vaccinated, a health policy analyst said.
Azrul Mohd Khalib, chief executive of the Galen Centre, said the fear of the vaccine was mostly based on ill-informed or incomplete understanding about a blood clot problem among some AstraZeneca recipients.
“Due to the negative news and debate surrounding this vaccine, there will be many who might not want to get their jabs, there will be no-shows or some may not even bother to register to be vaccinated,” he said.
Malaysian Medical Association president Dr Subramaniam Muniandy said: “We need to emphasise that those most at risk of adverse events are not the elderly or vulnerable groups. They are the young.

‘Nefarious’ video takes archbishop’s words out of context, says Catholic group |

PETALING JAYA: A Catholic lawyers’ group has condemned what it called a “nefarious” video posted online containing parts of a speech by Archbishop Julian Leow from 2014, which they said was taken out of context.
The Facebook post, uploaded on a page called the “Hud-Hud Crew”, claimed that in the four-minute video, Leow spoke of his 25-year plan against Muslims.
The post, titled “Rahsia Besar: Rakaman Perancangan 25 Tahun Archbishop Katolik Kuala Lumpur Untuk Rebus Orang Islam Seperti Merebus Katak”, claimed that Leow had used an analogy of boiling frogs to describe his plan to pressure Muslims in the country.
It also alleged that the archbishop had “admitted” that the issue on the use of the word “Allah” was part of this 25-year plan.
The post said the video was passed to the “Hud-Hud Crew” by anonymous members of the church, who supposedly wanted to thwart Leow’s plan that they believed would cause a rift between Muslims and Christians in the country.
It had also included the hashtag “#RebusUmatIslam” or #BoiltheMuslim.

PETALING JAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin dropped a broad hint today that Cabinet members from Umno will not resign from their posts in August, saying that such calls by leaders were not binding.
The science, technology and innovation minister said he would abide by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan’s statement which did not specify any particular date, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“It was ‘Taj Mahal’ who mentioned August,” he said referring to Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
“But we only need to heed the secretary-general’s directive,” the Malay daily quoted him as saying.

PETALING JAYA: A father who went to visit his son at a tahfiz school in Ampang was in for a shock. His son was terrified and in tears.
Worried about the boy, he took his son home and questioned him – and a horror story unfolded.
For some time now, the couple running the tahfiz school – which was unlicenced – has been abusing the students, the boy said.
He claimed he was punched in the head by the man running the school, and caned on his hands and feet, while the wife slapped him on the face four times. The boy had new and old bruises on his body.
The boy’s father then lodged a police report.
Yesterday, police raided the school and rescued eight male students, aged between seven and 15. The couple, who have been running the school in Taman Tun Abdul Razak since October 2020, were arrested.

Announcing the new political party, Semua Saya Sapu |

I am now retired, and contemplating politics. Not the ones in the corporate offices. They are already packed with full-time politicians, I wouldn’t stand a chance. I love academia too, but wouldn’t be able to survive there either. I’ve heard the politics there is especially vicious because the stakes are so small.
Good old political politics is what’s left for me. Therefore, I am examining my options.
I can join a political party. But I’ve never joined one before, and I hate filling up forms (I heard they can fill them out for you) and paying dues (I heard they can do that for you too) and attending meetings and demonstrations (ditto…).
For all I know, I may already be a member of a political party or two. So, joining a political party is out.
I can start an NGO. But if I start an NGO, I’d have to do all the form-filling, dues-paying and attending meetings as well as demonstrations for all my “members” myself. So, that’s out too.
I would have to start my own political party then. First order of business is choosing a party symbol. All the nice ones (eagle, teapot) are taken, and only a few not-so-attractive ones are left. I don’t want a tongue depressor as my party’s symbol, so I’d have to settle on the speeding Myvi symbol. The Registrar of Societies wasn’t happy to see that go: the next one, a squatting toilet bowl, may always remain untaken.
I would have loved a frog as a symbol. That symbol, however, has been retired for being so overused (though there’s special approval for use in Sabah by popular demand). And a Mercedes car symbol is reserved for a Kelantan-based party.

Don’t cheer over sukuk take-up, it’s debt, govt told |

PETALING JAYA: The enthusiasm of government leaders over the oversubscription of its recent sustainability sukuk issuance is misplaced, says an economist, adding there is “nothing to cheer about”.
“The government issues sukuk to raise money. It’s debt, it’s not foreign direct investment (FDI),” said Carmelo Ferlito of the Center for Market Education.
“Yes, the oversubscription is a sign that the market is confident of the Malaysian government’s ability to repay its debts over a long period, but it’s nothing to cheer about.”
Ferlito said the issuance of the sukuk in US dollars poses a long-term threat to Malaysia’s finances because of the risk that comes with currency fluctuations.
“In the past decade, the ringgit has depreciated by almost 30% against the US dollar. So if this trend continues, it means the amount of money we need to repay when the debt is due increases.”
He was commenting on the remarks of some government leaders on the oversubscription to the world’s first sovereign US dollar sustainability sukuk, which was done through the issuance of US$800 million 10-year trust certificates and US$500 million 30-year trust certificates.

Survey: Invisible to voters and weighed down by Anwar, PKR’s Shamsul Iskandar on thin ice in Hang Tuah Jaya
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — PKR’s Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Akin could struggle to defend his Hang Tuah Jaya federal seat where most constituents did not know of him and just 4 per cent want party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to lead the country, a survey found.
According to an Invoke survey commissioned by Malay Mail, only 21 per cent of Hang Tuah Jaya constituents were able to name Shamsul Iskandar as their parliamentarian and another 74 per cent said they have never met or received any assistance from him.
The same survey found 72 per cent saying they were unaware of news about him.
“Shmasul Iskandar’s recognisability among his constituents is remarkably low despite having served as member of parliament (MP) for Hang Tuah Jaya (formerly known as Bukit Katil) since 2013.
“Overall, only 21 per cent of Hang Tuah Jaya voters identified him correctly, while 74 per cent did not,’’ said the survey.
The Invoke survey, titled “Uncharted Territory”, polled 500 voters respectively in six different constituencies: Gombak (Datuk Seri Azmin Ali — Bersatu), Hang Tuah Jaya ( Shamsul Iskandar — PKR), Johor Baru (Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir — PKR), Seremban (Anthony Loke — DAP), Tanjong Malim (Chang Lih Kang — PKR), and Wangsa Maju (Datin Paduka Dr Tan Yee Kew — PKR).
The overall objective of the survey was to gauge voter sentiment six months after the formation of the unelected Perikatan Nasional government and resentment towards the “subversion of the people’s mandate.’’

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) proceedings have been suspended during the Emergency as per the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s instructions, said PAC chairman Wong Kah Woh today.
Wong, who is also the Ipoh Timur MP, slammed the statement released by de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan today, in which he said there should be no doubt or suspicion of abuse of power by the government as the system was “functioning as usual”, including PAC.
“(Either) YB Takiyuddin Hassan was wrong, or he did not take into account the impact of the declaration of Emergency on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) as well as other Parliamentary Select Committees (PSC).
“PAC and PSC have been directed and informed by the Speaker of the House that no proceedings or meetings may be held during the period the sittings of the House of Representatives and the Senate are suspended. This in turn has resulted in PAC proceedings and meetings having to be stopped,” he said in a statement today.
