PETALING JAYA: The government must stop using outdated laws to silence critics and dissenters, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said, following the arrests of two activists over the weekend.
On Friday night, Fahmi Reza was arrested under the colonial-era Sedition Act allegedly for creating a Spotify playlist critical of the Queen, and on Saturday, Mukmin Nantang was detained for allegedly violating Covid-19 protocols during a peace protest in Tawau, Sabah.
There were claims that Mukmin was assaulted by police while under remand, but Sabah police commissioner Hazani Ghazali denied them.
In a statement, Anwar described the incidents as examples of the government’s “desperate” attempts to stop criticism and cling to power.

Report: Umno’s decision to cut ties with Perikatan finalised, says party election chief
KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — Umno election chief Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman has confirmed that the party will cut ties with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition by August following a party supreme council meeting yesterday, reported Utusan Malaysia today.
Speaking to the Malay daily, Tajuddin also stated that the meeting merely discussed the consensus to cut ties with PN that was reached during its annual general assembly last month.
Moreover, Tajuddin also explained that the party intends to receive advice from the National Security Council and the Registrar of Societies on how best to proceed with party elections amidst a concerning Covid-19 situation.
“This is to ensure that the election process involving all of Umno’s branches, including its Women, Youth and Puteri wing of some 66,287 meetings in all 191 divisions involving 3.3 million members, can proceed smoothly. It will also take into account the rising number of Covid-19 cases,” he said, adding that party branch level meetings, not the election process, are due to take place from June.
However, Tajuddin dismissed speculation that yesterday’s meeting had discussed hot-button issues.
“There was no hot-button issue. Everything went on smoothly,” he was quoted as saying.
On the issue of the supposed leaked phone conversation between party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Tajuddin said the matter was not brought up during the meeting.
Tajuddin also stated that the party’s supreme council members would have been “brave” enough to broach the subject with Ahmad Zahid if they had felt it necessary.
“Nothing. It was not brought up. Maybe in the spirit of Ramadan?
“Everyone expressed their support for the president. The president also wants to see all of the MT (supreme council members) unite to solve the problems faced by the people. That is it,” he said.
As for Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim’s removal as Perlis Umno state liaison chairman, Tajuddin asked the former not to drag the issue out.
“What is the issue? Enough, no need to make noise. People already know who he is. It is obvious he does not respect the president’s decision, and wants to make himself out to be the hero.
“It will not get him anywhere. Working with Anwar was not even raised. No discussions at all, what is there to discuss... no such thing.
“Not even that, he even challenges the president, the decision made by the general assembly, challenges the leadership of the president, what doesn't he realise?
“It will be a pity if he continues to act this way. He will be on the losing end,” he said.

Madam Wong, the 80-year-old who wakes and bakes at 1am |

KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia’s capital city remains in deep slumber at 1am, one elderly woman is just getting out of bed to start her day.
At 80 years old, Madam Wong has stuck to a daily routine of waking up past midnight for the last 40 years, after which she gets straight to work to prepare her pastries.
The octogenarian sells freshly-made kaya goods out of a humble stall situated at the back of a narrow, hidden alley opposite the Maybank branch in Jalan Yap Ah Loy.
The entire process of gathering the ingredients, baking the sweet treats and eventually transporting them to her stall takes up to seven hours.
Her bestseller is her light, fluffy kaya swiss roll – wholeheartedly made based on a recipe concocted by her husband when they first started the family business in 1974.

Grab’s SPACtacular rise… and looming threats |

Grab is an unequivocal success. It’s one of Southeast Asia’s biggest ever startups and has achieved what most companies can only dream of. In a short nine years, it has gone from a scrappy startup to a regional tech juggernaut.
The latest feather in its cap is its SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) deal – the largest of its kind the world has seen – that will fill its coffers with more than US$4 billion and value it at a near-astronomical US$40 billion (RM165 billion). This makes it more valuable than Malaysian giants Maybank, Tenaga Nasional and Sime Darby combined.
The best part of it all? The founders – Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling are both Malaysian, with Grab starting as MyTeksi in 2012 right here in Kuala Lumpur. I can’t help but feel proud of the fact that two Malaysians have orchestrated a masterclass in startup building that can rival that of luminaries in Silicon Valley and Shenzhen.

KANGAR, April 25 — Arau Umno and the division’s Puteri wing rejected the appointment of Datuk Seri Azlan Man as Perlis Umno Liaison chairman to replace Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, and urged party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to return the post to Shahidan.
Arau Umno deputy chief Salim Dahaman said the grassroots would continue supporting Shahidan, who is Arau Umno chief.
“Shahidan should continue leading Perlis Umno based on his contributions in helping Umno win two (out of three) parliamentary seats and 10 state seats in the 14th General Election which led to the formation of the Barisan Nasional government in Perlis,” he told reporters here today.
Ahmad Zahid announced the appointment yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Supreme Council has urged the government to set up a royal commission of inquiry to investigate allegations contained in the controversial memoir of former attorney-general Tommy Thomas.
In its meeting today, the party leadership said the call for an inquiry was based on the numerous police reports lodged against the book “My Story: Justice in the Wilderness”.
Other decisions reached by the supreme council were:
Umno elections
To seek advice from the Registrar of Societies and National Security Council on ways to hold party elections amid the pandemic, in line with the party’s constitution and Covid-19 prevention rules.
The elections will involve all 3.3 million members in the party’s Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings, and 191 national divisions.

India sets Covid-19 infection record for fourth straight day with hospitals desperate for oxygen
The country also reported its highest daily death toll for the ninth consecutive day, adding 2,767 fatalities in the past 24 hours.
The country of 1.3 billion people has logged over a million new cases in the past three days, bringing its pandemic totals up to 16.9 million recorded cases of the coronavirus, including 192,311 deaths.
The sky-rocketing Covid-19 infections are devastating India's communities and hospitals. Everything is in short supply -- intensive care unit beds, medicine, oxygen and ventilators. Bodies are piling up in morgues and crematoriums, and authorities have been forced to hold mass cremations at makeshift sites.
Just six weeks ago, India's Health Minister declared the country was "in the endgame" of the Covid-19 pandemic.
But Sunday's numbers, which represent the highest caseload recorded in a single day anywhere in the world, according to a CNN tally of figures from John Hopkins University, tell a different story.

PETALING JAYA: The government must explain what has happened to the RM5 billion allocated to purchase Covid-19 vaccines for Malaysians before using the National Trust Fund (KWAN) for the purpose, says Najib Razak.
The former prime minister said not only had Parliament approved RM3 billion in the 2021 budget for vaccine purchase, but a supplementary amount of RM2 billion was also allocated later.
“The Perikatan Nasional government does not want to answer the pertinent question on why we need to touch our trust fund for this purpose.
“The government has borrowed RM85 billion and has been selling various assets of the country for the last four months,” Najib said on his Facebook.
