PETALING JAYA: Speculation is rife that plans are being put in place to get Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his predecessor, Najib Razak, out of the picture by August and to woo others under a new party leadership called Umno 3.0.
“Umno 3.0 will have a new leader and will work with PPBM and PAS,” a source close to the talks said, adding that calls for Zahid to step down are expected to get louder in the coming days, especially from Umno ministers.
Umno was known as Umno 2.0 after a split in the party in 1987.
The source said there are some party leaders “stubbornly loyal” to Zahid but “once the two (Zahid and Najib) can be removed, a new Umno can emerge stronger”.

PETALING JAYA, April 9 — Fugitive businessman Datuk Seri Nicky Liow Soon Hee — a mastermind of organised crime has been grabbing headlines nationwide recently but his large-scale money laundering operations and commercial crime cases started seven years ago.
Liow, a self-proclaimed philanthropist and the man behind Winner Dynasty Group Sdn Bhd — an 'investment management company' that was in fact involved in various types of scams is currently on the run after police crushed his billion ringgit scam network in a massive operation with the arrest of 68 suspects.
Last week, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador revealed that 34 officers and personnel from various enforcement agencies were suspected of having ties and protecting the activities of the organised crime syndicate, with Liow himself on the run.
This morning, 16 members of a gang named after him will be charged with organised crime in the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court.

Report: After purported gag order over remarks on Umno president, Nazri tells Ahmad Maslan to ‘go to hell’
KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — Outspoken Umno MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz told his party colleague and secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Maslan to "go to hell", after the latter reportedly issued a gag order on him following his critical comments of their party president.
Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported the former de facto law minister as saying that Umno is "not a communist party" and that anyone in Umno could speak for themselves.
Nazri reportedly said that a message was issued by Ahmad informing him that only three people were allowed to speak on behalf of the party, namely Zahid, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and himself.
“But he can go to hell. This is 2021 and Umno is not a communist party.

Sued for libel by ex-AG, Kit Siang says wrote 1MDB-related article to express own opinion
KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang told the High Court here today that the article he wrote about the 1Malaysia
Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal was his own opinion and his caution to the government of the day at that time in resting its laurels in combating the menace of corruption.
Lim said the article was written in 2019, consistent with his duty as a responsible Member of Parliament (MP) in raising and highlighting issues not just of real concern to the general public but also in ensuring good governance in accordance with the rule of law by the government of the day.
The Iskandar Puteri MP further said that he knew about the 1MDB scandal as a result of the massive media coverage locally and abroad about notorious events taking place surrounding the 1MDB scandal and these events were reflected in media reports.
“At the material time, the plaintiff (Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali) took office as the Attorney-General (AG) after the summary removal of his predecessor, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. At the time of his removal, as reported, Abdul Gani was in his capacity as public prosecutor preparing to prefer charges against the former prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak in relation to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a company connected to 1MDB.

One vehicle stolen every one hour 15 minutes in Malaysia, says vehicle theft reduction council
KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — A vehicle is stolen every one hour 15 minutes in Malaysia, according to Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia Berhad (VTREC) coordinator, Mas Tina Abdul Hamid.
She said a study conducted by VTREC last year found that 20 vehicles were stolen each day in 2020.
“However, the number has dropped following close cooperation between VTREC, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and other agencies,” she told reporters after the launching of the PDRM-VTREC Vehicle Theft Awareness Campaign, here, today.
Meanwhile, deputy director (Intelligence/Operations) of Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, Datuk Dev Kumar said the number of reported vehicle theft cases nationwide had shown a decline each year.

Heng Swee Keat takes himself out of the running for Singapore PM, cites short runway, age and health as factors
SINGAPORE, April 8 — Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has taken himself out of the running for the top job, two-and-a-half years after emerging as the frontrunner to succeed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Conveying his decision in a letter to PM Lee today, a copy of which was sent to newsrooms, Heng, who is also finance minister, said that he would have too short of a runway — given that he would be near his mid-60s when he takes over as prime minister after the Covid-19 crisis is over.
It would thus be in Singapore’s best interests for a younger member of the Cabinet to steer the country forward.
Heng, who turns 60 this year, will also relinquish his finance minister portfolio at the next Cabinet reshuffle, which is expected to be announced in about two weeks. He will stay as deputy prime minister and coordinating minister for economic policies.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, April 8 — Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican has urged the party to hold elections as soon as possible to resolve its internal issues.
Reezal Merican, who is also Youth and Sports Minister and Kepala Batas MP, said Umno elections should also be expedited as the term for Supreme Council members and division office bearers ends in May.
“If the DAP and other parties can hold party elections without delays, there is no reason why Umno can’t do the same. Party elections must be held as soon as possible as it is the only democratic way (to resolve the party’s issues).
“By holding elections, we will send out the message that we are sticking firm to our promises and oaths,” he told reporters after officiating the 2021 state-level Teachers Day celebrations here today.

After spending 44 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, this man says his life is worth more than $750,000
(CNN)Ronnie Long sat in jail in North Carolina for 44 years for a crime he didn't commit, and now he is planning to fight a law that says he is only owed $750,000.
Long, who is Black, was accused of raping a White woman in 1976. An all-White jury found him guilty of rape and burglary and sentenced him to life in prison.
After maintaining his innocence, and pursuing a lifetime of appeals and denied motions, he was released by a pardon from the governor in December 2020 after the courts found Long had been wrongly convicted.
Since his sentencing, "a trickle of post-trial disclosures has unearthed a troubling and striking pattern of deliberate police suppression of material evidence," US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Stephanie Thacker wrote.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been lauded for crippling a cartel that was monopolising government tenders, reportedly headed by a wealthy and powerful “Datuk”.
Calling it a betrayal of the rakyat’s trust and an embarrassment to the civil service, anti-graft group Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) said bumiputra contractors were the most affected by this syndicate.
“Bumiputras are the biggest losers because honest companies are losing out on these contracts.
“This is despite the government’s efforts to uplift the bumiputras through well-planned affirmative action policies and awarding of contracts,” TI-M president Muhammad Mohan said in a statement today.
