It’s tough for young leaders in Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 04-17-2021, 11:28 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Sebastian-Kurz-Finlands-Sanna-Marin-and-...170421.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Austria’s Sebastian Kurz became the youngest head of government in the world at 31 in 2017. New Zealand’s Jacinda Arden was sworn in as prime minister when she was 37, also in 2017. Finalnd’s Sanna Marin took office at the age of 34 in 2019.

The trend in recent years of young people coming into power suggests that voters in many countries are placing personal character above experience when they elect their heads of government, but analysts say it would be hard to see such a leaning in contemporary Malaysia.

Speaking to FMT, Syed Arabi Idid of the International Islamic University Malaysia said political parties in the country still generally adhered to strict hierarchies, often reserving top posts to older members.

He said he subscribed to the belief that it is not always necessary for a politically experienced person to hold the top post in a country.

Coral reefs at Sabah’s Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park in danger

Coral reefs at Sabah’s Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park in danger following aggressive crown-of-thorns starfish outbreak

KOTA KINABALU, April 17 — While the city and parts of the state are fending off more Covid-19 infections, the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park here is facing an underwater outbreak of its own.

The dreaded crown-of-thorns starfish (CoT), a known aggressive coral predator, has been invading the park. The local dive community fear the park is in danger of losing its coral reefs and eventually, its diving industry.

“Large areas of our popular reefs are being destroyed right now. In three days, we have terminated some 150 or so of them, but there are many more, and we cannot possibly get rid of them all on our own,” said volunteer marine conservation group Dive Rangers’ founder Bob Hartley.

Sources say Bersatu and PAS discussed contesting Umno seats
Posted by: superadmin - 04-17-2021, 09:13 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and PAS have already started discussions about contesting several Umno-held seats at the 15th General Election (GE15).

Several sources said the discussions — mostly informal and attended by state leaders — indicate that both parties are laying the groundwork for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) election machinery while completely alienating Umno.

“Discussions (to contest Umno seats) have been going on for some time, but no official meeting has been held about the decisions yet,” a PN source told Malay Mail.

On February 25, PN Information chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali started the ball rolling for the setting up of election structures at state levels.

How Two Malaysians Moved Grab To Singapore And Grow It As SEA's Most Valuable Srartip

A $40 Billion Listing - How Two Malaysians Moved Grab To Singapore And Grow It As Southeast Asia's Most Valuable Startup

Grab Holdings Inc. is going public in the United States through a merger with US-based Altimeter Growth Corp. The partnership, which values the Southeast Asian ride-hailing and food delivery giant at a mind-boggling US$39.6 billion in market capitalization, will see its stock trade on the Nasdaq Composite Index. Essentially, that makes Grab the Southeast Asia’s most valuable start-up.

The deal would also make Grab the first Southeast Asian tech unicorn to go public through a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) and give it funds – lots of cash – to expand. The merger will see investment firm Altimeter provides up to US$4.5 billion in cash proceeds to Singapore-headquartered Grab. But the tech unicorn actually started in neighbouring Malaysia.

Covid-19 weekly round-up: Threat of fourth wave looms large for Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 04-16-2021, 03:41 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — Was yesterday’s sharp hike in new Covid-19 cases an indication of an imminent “fourth wave”?

Just a few days ago, Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba had expressed their concern over the probability of a resurgence of infections.

Daily new cases reported over the week under review (April 10 to 16) exceeded 1,500 a number of times while active cases have climbed past 15,000.

The R-naught (R0/Rt) value or infectivity rate of the coronavirus stood at 1.17 nationwide throughout the week. An R0 value of 0.5 would be needed to flatten the infection curve.

How Grab is Becoming an Everyday, Everything App in Southeast Asia

Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling spun the idea of building a ride-hailing company, Grab, while pursuing MBA at Harvard Business School.

Grab was initially conceived as a college project and had bagged US$25,000 in prize money from the pitch contest organised by the school.

Hailing from Malaysia, the duo was aware of the chaotic and unorganised scene the Southeast Asian countries’ transportation sector  faced. Moreover, rolling out a ride-hailing service in the region would give them first-mover advantage. Bringing together their knowledge in business administration and general management, the two started jotting down a business plan and built the application with the prize money they won from the pitch contest.

After sleepless nights and countless brainstorming sessions, Anthony and Tan rolled out GrabTaxi in 2012 in Malaysia—just a year before Uber launched its ride-hailing service in Singapore and two years after Go-Jek in Indonesia.

Afghanistan: 'We have won the war, America has lost', say Taliban
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 04:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Driving to Taliban-controlled territory doesn't take long. Around 30 minutes from the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, passing large craters left by roadside bombs, we meet our host: Haji Hekmat, the Taliban's shadow mayor in Balkh district.

Perfumed and in a black turban, he's a veteran member of the group, having first joined the militants in the 1990s when they ruled over the majority of the country.

The Taliban have arranged a display of force for us. Lined up on either side of the street are heavily armed men, one carrying a rocket propelled grenade launcher, another an M4 assault rifle captured from US forces. Balkh was once one of the more stable parts of the country; now it's become one of the most violent.

Baryalai, a local military commander with a ferocious reputation, points down the road, "the government forces are just there by the main market, but they can't leave their bases. This territory belongs to the mujahideen".

It's a similar picture across much of Afghanistan: the government controls the cities and bigger towns, but the Taliban are encircling them, with a presence in large parts of the countryside.

Will Celcom-Digi merger be good for consumers, asks Tok Mat
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 04:12 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Celcom-Digi merger needs to be studied in detail by the government to ensure there will be benefits to consumers, and not just the giant entities, said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

In a Facebook post today, Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, called for an extensive government assessment on the merger’s impact on national importance, the dynamics of the telecommunications industry, and its compliance to competition laws.

Recently it was announced that the Celcom Axiata Bhd and Digi.Com Bhd merger would be finalised in the next few months.

The merger is set to become the largest telecommunication service provider in the country if negotiations are successful.

Why are so many babies dying of Covid-19 in Brazil?
Posted by: superadmin - 04-15-2021, 03:49 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

More than a year into the pandemic, deaths in Brazil are now at their peak. But despite the overwhelming evidence that Covid-19 rarely kills young children, in Brazil 1,300 babies have died from the virus. One doctor refused to test Jessika Ricarte's one-year-old son for Covid, saying his symptoms did not fit the profile of the virus. Two months later he died of complications from the disease.

[Image: _118054022_472c7648-af0b-484a-8ae6-735843ca6fac.jpg]

After two years of trying, and failed fertility treatments, teacher Jessika Ricarte had all but given up on having a family. Then she fell pregnant with Lucas.

"His name comes from luminous. And he was a light in our life. He showed that happiness was much more than we imagined," she says.

She first suspected something was wrong when Lucas, always a good eater, lost his appetite.

At first Jessika wondered if he was teething. Lucas's godmother, a nurse, suggested that he might just have a sore throat. But after he developed a fever, then fatigue and slightly laboured breathing, Jessika took him to hospital, and asked for him to be tested for Covid.
"The doctor put on the oximeter. Lucas's levels were 86%. Now I know that is not normal," says Jessika.

But he was not feverish, so the doctor said: "My dear, don't worry. There's no need for a Covid test. It's probably just a minor sore throat."

He told Jessika that Covid-19 was rare in children, gave her some antibiotics and sent her home. Despite her misgivings, there was no option to have Lucas tested privately at the time.

Jessika says that some of his symptoms dissipated at the end of his 10-day antibiotics course, but the tiredness remained - as did her concerns about coronavirus.
