Can Zahid survive pressure from within and outside Umno?
Posted by: superadmin - 04-08-2021, 11:56 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is under tremendous pressure to quit his post but some analysts believe he will survive, at least until the party holds its presidential election.

The pressure on Zahid is coming both from within and outside the party.

Political strategist Syed Arabi Idid said Zahid appeared to have solid ground support at the recent Umno annual general assembly.

However, he said, the response of Umno ministers in Muhyiddin Yassin’s Cabinet to the assembly’s decision to cut ties with PPBM and Perikatan Nasional and for them to quit their government posts, had not been well received.

Focus on inclusion, not alienation, in dealing with LGBT, Putrajaya told
Posted by: superadmin - 04-08-2021, 11:42 AM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Suhakam has urged the government to reconsider its decision to impose heavier punishments for offences associated with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Commissioner Hishamudin Yunus said the best approach in dealing with LGBT individuals was to “help integrate them into mainstream society” by respecting their constitutional rights to equality, privacy and a life of dignity.

Speaking to FMT, the former Court of Appeal judge said it should not be acceptable to discriminate against the community or to treat its members as criminals.

He noted that it was not an offence to be a transgender under any of the state shariah criminal enactments and also that crossdressing was no longer a shariah crime in all states except Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Sabah.

Report: Umno to contest all three seats in Pagoh for GE15, says division chief
Posted by: superadmin - 04-08-2021, 11:36 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — Umno will contest all three seats in the Pagoh constituency, its division chief Ismail Mohamed said.

He said the Umno division had in a recent Pagoh delegates’ meeting decided that the party will defend all three seats — Pagoh Parliamentary seat, and two state seats Bukit Kepong and Bukit Pasir.

“It was a unanimous decision made by the delegates, while respecting the state level decision that Umno will contest in 25 seats in Johor except Pagoh,” Ismail said in a report by Utusan Malaysia today.

While he stressed that the division respects decisions made at the state level, at the end of the day, Ismail said it boils down to what the Umno supreme council and grassroots say.

Warisan can’t fight alone after Pakatan snub, needs partner to stay relevant

Analysts: Warisan can’t fight alone after Pakatan snub, needs partner to stay relevant
[Image: 20200914FL17_parti_warisan_Sabah_flag_logo.JPG]

KOTA KINABALU, April 8 — After Parti Warisan Sabah distanced itself from Pakatan Harapan, political analysts have warned that the East Malaysian party will need to team up with a national-level political party if it wishes to remain relevant to voters.

The analysts also suggested that Warisan may benefit from a partnership with Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), as the latter is currently facing roadblocks from registering with the Registrar of Societies.

“The move would be important, what else can they do,” said Singapore Institute of International Affairs senior fellow Oh Ei Sun.

“To remain politically relevant, Warisan would have to articulate how its self-proclaimed independent positions are superior to those of the major coalitions. It could indeed team up with other more or less independent parties such as Muda such that they could eventually evolve into a credible and viable third force to be reckoned with,” he said.

Bolsonaro shrugs off criticism he is 'genocidal' as Brazil reports record 4,000 daily
Posted by: superadmin - 04-07-2021, 09:46 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

São Paulo (CNN)Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has shrugged off criticisms that he is "genocidal" in his opposition to Covid-19 restrictions, as the nation recorded its deadliest 24 hours of the pandemic so far.

Brazil smashed its previous daily record with 4,195 Covid-19 fatalities, health ministry data Tuesday showed -- marking the highest death count in the world for that 24-hour period, according to Johns Hopkins University. The new figures pushed Brazil's total pandemic death toll to almost 337,000.

Additionally, nearly 87,000 new Covid-19 cases were reported across the country, raising the total tally of infections to 13,100,580, according to the health ministry.

Bolsonaro, who has continued to downplay the seriousness of his country's health crisis, brushed off claims he was to blame for the country's spiraling death toll. The President has repeatedly opposed lockdowns and restrictive measures, and criticized governors and mayors with insulting language for implementing them.

"They called me homophobic, racist, fascist, a torturer and now... what is it now? Now I am... someone who kills a lot of people? Genocidal. Now, I'm genocidal," he said to supporters outside the Presidential Palace in Brasilia on Tuesday evening, according to video posted on YouTube.

Malaysia sends back over 300 containers of illicit plastic waste, says minister
Posted by: superadmin - 04-07-2021, 12:04 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — Malaysia said today it had sent 267 containers of illegal plastic waste back to their countries of origin since 2019, and was in the process of returning 81 more.

Malaysia became the destination of choice for the world’s plastic waste after China banned imports in 2018, but is struggling to fend off a deluge of generally unlicenced unrecyclable garbage.

New UN rules on the trade of hazardous waste under the Basel Convention came into force on Jan. 1, intended to discourage the production of hard-to-recycle plastics and to prevent rich countries dumping trash in the developing world, where it often ends up polluting the local environment and the ocean.

Do Malays not consider graft a problem, asks media boss
Posted by: superadmin - 04-06-2021, 09:43 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

[Image: FMT-HUSSAMUDDIN-YAACUB-RASUAH-BUSTERS-04.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Karangkraf Media Group chairman Hussamuddin Yaacub has called out a lack of coverage by the Malay-language media of Rasuah Busters, an anti-graft movement that he heads.

In a tweet, Hussamuddin said he found it odd that only vernacular and English-language newspapers and news portals gave the movement extensive coverage.

“Do Malays not consider corruption a huge problem?” he said, adding that Sinar Harian was the only Malay daily that covered a press conference yesterday about Rasuah Busters. (The event was also covered by FMT’s Bahasa Malaysia section which reported him as saying the movement was non-political.)

His tweet comes a day after the movement announced its line-up of its “core team” comprising 15 voluntary independent bodies from various backgrounds.

They included former PPBM leader Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff, businessman Anas Zubedy and former reporter G Manimaran.

The movement aims to tackle all forms of corruption, including extortion, cronyism, nepotism and embezzlement.

Govt to go ahead with tougher laws against LGBT
Posted by: superadmin - 04-06-2021, 02:36 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya is set to go ahead and impose heavier punishments against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community by increasing the sentencing limits in the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).

Despite outcry from rights groups and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) earlier this year, religious affairs minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said Putrajaya will continue with the amendments to Act 355 as LGBT culture is not just against Islamic law but even human nature.

“So we cannot accept such practices. We just need to manage the issue with wisdom, inviting and educating them (the LGBT community) to return to the right path,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

When asked whether the amendment would be tabled at the next Parliament sitting, he said this was yet to be decided but added that the ministry was “heading in that direction”.

Credit Suisse takes $4.7 billion hit from Archegos hedge fund scandal; execs step down
  • Last week, Credit Suisse revealed that it was expecting heavy losses in the wake of the meltdown of U.S. hedge fund Archegos Capital.
  • It took a charge of $4.7 billion as a result and now expects a first-quarter pre-tax loss of around $960.4 million.
  • Investment Bank CEO Brian Chin and Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Lara Warner will step down from their roles with immediate effect.

Credit Suisse on Tuesday announced several high-level staff departures and proposed a cut to its dividend as it weighs heavy losses from the Archegos Capital saga.

The Swiss lender now expects a first-quarter pre-tax loss of around 900 million Swiss francs ($960.4 million), after taking a charge of 4.4 billion Swiss francs as a result of the scandal.

“The significant loss in our Prime Services business relating to the failure of a U.S.-based hedge fund is unacceptable,” CEO Thomas Gottstein said in a trading update.
