Govt to go ahead with tougher laws against LGBT
Posted by: superadmin - 04-06-2021, 02:36 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya is set to go ahead and impose heavier punishments against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community by increasing the sentencing limits in the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).

Despite outcry from rights groups and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) earlier this year, religious affairs minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said Putrajaya will continue with the amendments to Act 355 as LGBT culture is not just against Islamic law but even human nature.

“So we cannot accept such practices. We just need to manage the issue with wisdom, inviting and educating them (the LGBT community) to return to the right path,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

When asked whether the amendment would be tabled at the next Parliament sitting, he said this was yet to be decided but added that the ministry was “heading in that direction”.

Credit Suisse takes $4.7 billion hit from Archegos hedge fund scandal; execs step down
  • Last week, Credit Suisse revealed that it was expecting heavy losses in the wake of the meltdown of U.S. hedge fund Archegos Capital.
  • It took a charge of $4.7 billion as a result and now expects a first-quarter pre-tax loss of around $960.4 million.
  • Investment Bank CEO Brian Chin and Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Lara Warner will step down from their roles with immediate effect.

Credit Suisse on Tuesday announced several high-level staff departures and proposed a cut to its dividend as it weighs heavy losses from the Archegos Capital saga.

The Swiss lender now expects a first-quarter pre-tax loss of around 900 million Swiss francs ($960.4 million), after taking a charge of 4.4 billion Swiss francs as a result of the scandal.

“The significant loss in our Prime Services business relating to the failure of a U.S.-based hedge fund is unacceptable,” CEO Thomas Gottstein said in a trading update.

George Floyd: Minneapolis police chief says Chauvin violated policy
Posted by: superadmin - 04-06-2021, 01:54 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

The police chief of Minneapolis has testified that ex-officer Derek Chauvin violated the agency's policy on force during the arrest of George Floyd.

Chief Medaria Arradondo said the way Mr Chauvin restrained Mr Floyd was not in line with training and "certainly not part of our ethics and our values".

The chief had fired Mr Chauvin and the three other officers involved days after Mr Floyd's death last May.

Mr Chauvin is on trial for murder and has denied the charges against him.

Footage of Mr Chauvin, who is white, kneeling on African-American Mr Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes last year sparked global protests against racism.

Selangor exco says ECRL 3.0 proves Perikatan federal govt a ‘big bully’
Posted by: superadmin - 04-06-2021, 11:50 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 — Putrajaya acted like a “big bully” in steamrolling through the latest version of the ambitious East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), Selangor executive councillor Datuk Teng Chang Khim said today.

Teng — in charge of investment, trade, industries and small and medium enterprises in Malaysia’s most developed state — claimed the Perikatan Nasional (PN) federal government did not engage the Selangor state government prior to changing back to an old and questionable route drawn up when the Barisan Nasional (BN) was in power.

“Under Section 20A of the Town and Country Planning Act, the Federal Government shall consult the Planning Committee of the state for such a proposed development.

“A meaningful consultation is one that satisfies the needs of both parties and not one that favoured by one party without the permission of the other,” he said on Facebook.

Japan just recorded its earliest cherry blossom bloom in 1,200 years

Japan just recorded its earliest cherry blossom bloom in 1,200 years. Scientists warn it's a symptom of the larger climate crisis

[Image: 200327113928-02-japan-cherry-blossoms-03...ge-169.jpg]

(CNN)Think of Japan in the spring, and the image that comes to mind is likely the country's famous cherry blossoms, also known as "sakura" -- white and pink flowers, bursting across cities and mountains, petals covering the ground.

The flowers, which experience a "peak bloom" that only lasts a few days, have been revered in Japan for more than a thousand years.

Crowds celebrate with viewing parties, flocking to the most popular locations to take photos and have picnics underneath the branches.

But this year, cherry blossom season has come and gone in the blink of an eye, in one of the earliest blooms on record -- and scientists warn it's a symptom of the larger climate crisis threatening ecosystems everywhere.

Yasuyuki Aono, a researcher at Osaka Prefecture University, has gathered records from Kyoto back to 812 AD from historical documents and diaries. In the central city of Kyoto, cherry blossoms peaked on March 26, the earliest in more than 1,200 years, Aono said.

‘Untouchable’ publicity seeker – the foolish exploits of fugitive, Nicky
Posted by: superadmin - 04-05-2021, 08:00 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Fugitive crime lord, Nicky Liow Soon Hee, was a self-absorbed lawbreaker hooked on publicity, an FMT review of his pictures and videos on social media shows.

The 33-year-old “Datuk Seri” acted with impunity to publicly display his hunger for money, power and fame.

Nicky’s conceited attempts at gaining big shot status also hinged on his social service that made him a hero in some people’s eyes.

The headlines last week were all about the founder of the Winner Dynasty Group, who now it has emerged, charmed people into a state of awe with well-publicised donations to social and religious bodies and government agencies.

Were Nicky’s generous handouts through his foundation, Yayasan Winner Emperor Sedunia, aimed at winning favours from the government and law enforcement, as well as to be loved by the public?

A beneficiary of donations by the foundation told FMT it was difficult to see Nicky as a crime kingpin and “Malaysia’s youngest philanthropist”.

‘Debt disaster’ will derail recovery this year, says Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 04-05-2021, 07:53 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The record level of household income debt-to-GDP ratio, which has hit 93.3% at the end of 2020, is very concerning, says opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the previous record of 87.5% in June 2020 at the height of the first wave of Covid-19, was already a dangerous mark.

In a Facebook post today, Anwar said the bulk of the liabilities was tied to homeowner and vehicle debts due to the effects of the movement control order implemented by the government, as well as “dangerously high” credit card debt.

He said the people did not have any control over their fate as they were forced to seek out more loans and take on more debt, thus condemning them to debt traps.

Malaysia’s cabotage issue: Three questions for Wee Ka Siong
Posted by: superadmin - 04-05-2021, 06:53 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: FW1064092_KL13_15072020_PARLIMEN_BN202007145234-lpr.JPG]

PETALING JAYA, April 5 — Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has recently responded to our post about MyIX’s statement on the new submarine cables by Facebook to Singapore and Indonesia. In case you missed it, MyIX had issued a statement describing the new submarine cables as a huge win for Singapore and Indonesia but a significant loss for Malaysia.

MyIX which is known as the Malaysia Internet Exchange is an initiative under the Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and it’s Malaysia’s only non-profit national internet exchange body operated by the industry. MyIX is managed by a committee consisting of local Internet Service Providers (ISP) such as TIME dotcom, Maxis, YTL Communications, MyKris Asia, Celcom Axiata, Redtone, TT dotcom and Telekom Malaysia. Some of its international members include Akamai, Alibaba, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Netflix and Telenor.

For the past few months, MyIX has called upon the government to reinstate the cabotage exemption for foreign vessels to conduct undersea cable repair works or risk losing out more foreign direct investments (FDI) to neighbouring countries. The cabotage issue is seen as a stumbling block for Malaysia to position itself as an investor friendly country for submarine cable investments which will provide a robust and reliable internet infrastructure.

It appears that Wee wasn’t too pleased when former Transport Minister Anthony Loke shared our post on Facebook with the caption “Thanks to Wee Ka Siong for his ‘brilliant’ strategy of protecting one company at the expense of the nation’s interest!”

In his response on Facebook, Wee described this publication (SoyaCincau) as an untrusted source and had accused his predecessor as trying to be a hero ahead of his party elections. You can read the full post on his Facebook page.

Ex-AG Apandi testifies that he never ordered to close Najib’s 1MDB, SRC cases
Posted by: superadmin - 04-05-2021, 06:43 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 — Former attorney general Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali said today he had never ordered investigations into Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd cases to be “closed”, including those that were classified as “no further action”.

Testifying in his lawsuit against DAP’s Lim Kit Siang at the High Court, Apandi said any investigators could have reopened the probe if new evidence resurfaced.

“I challenge Lim to show that I had closed the investigations and disallowed further investigations into both 1MDB and SRC International cases,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

Apandi was also quoted as saying that throughout his 47 years in the civil service, legal practice and judiciary, he had never committed any wrongdoing.
