DAP slams PAS plan to redraw boundaries to benefit Malay-Muslim community
Posted by: superadmin - 03-24-2021, 02:28 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: DAP has described PAS’ proposal to redraw election boundaries to benefit the Malay-Muslim community as an admission the Perikatan Nasional-led government will “gerrymander constituencies” at the expense of others.

Its secretary-general, Lim Guan Eng, said the proposal by PAS’ Khairuddin Aman Razali was “divisive and irresponsible” and would “discriminate, deprive and deny the rights of non-Malays and non-Muslims”.

Khairuddin, the plantation industries and commodities minister, had said in a Facebook post that if PN won the general election with a two-thirds majority, changes to election boundaries to benefit Malay-Muslims could be made, as well as increasing the number of parliamentary seats in Malay-majority states.

“We can achieve this goal by strengthening the alliance (among) the three Malay parties, despite the obstacles. Straight fights are important in order to win GE15,” he said.

In a statement today, Lim said the suggestion on redrawing electoral boundaries based on race and religion was unconstitutional, and would be rejected by “all right-thinking and justice-loving Malaysians”.

Sidney Powell argues in new court filing that no reasonable people would believe her
Posted by: superadmin - 03-24-2021, 11:57 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Washington (CNN)Right-wing lawyer Sidney Powell is claiming in a new court filing that reasonable people wouldn't have believed as fact her assertions of fraud after the 2020 presidential election.

The election infrastructure company Dominion Voting Systems sued Powell for defamation after she pushed lawsuits and made appearances in conservative media on behalf of then-President Donald Trump to sow doubt about the 2020 election results. Dominion claims that Powell knew her election fraud accusations were false and hurtful to the company.

In a new court filing, Powell's attorneys write that she was sharing her "opinion" and that the public could reach "their own conclusions" about whether votes were changed by election machines.

"Given the highly charged and political context of the statements, it is clear that Powell was describing the facts on which she based the lawsuits she filed in support of President Trump," Powell's defense lawyers wrote in a court filing on Monday.

"Indeed, Plaintiffs themselves characterize the statements at issue as 'wild accusations' and 'outlandish claims.' They are repeatedly labelled 'inherently improbable' and even 'impossible.' Such characterizations of the allegedly defamatory statements further support Defendants' position that reasonable people would not accept such statements as fact but view them only as claims that await testing by the courts through the adversary process."

Election authorities and Dominion have resoundingly called Trump's loss in the election accurate and untainted by any possible major security risks. Trump's lawyers and his allies quickly lost or dropped all but one minor case out of nearly 60 following the election, as the then-President sought to overturn Joe Biden's win in multiple key states.

Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan, one of the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in January after the January 6 Capitol attack, tweeted that Powell's argument is "pathetic."

"Absolutely infuriating. GOP lost the Senate & 5 ppl died in attack on the Capitol in part bc Sidney Powell misled millions claiming stolen elections. Now Powell backtracks saying "no reasonable person" wld believe what she *ALLEGED IN COURT* were "statements of fact"!?! Pathetic."

Azmin wrong to involve Anwar, PKR in suit, say voters
Posted by: superadmin - 03-24-2021, 11:48 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten voters in Mohamed Azmin Ali’s Gombak constituency who alleged that he had breached his fiduciary duties as their MP have applied to strike out part of his defence for including Anwar Ibrahim’s alleged sexual misconduct and practice of nepotism in PKR.

In their application filed by Messrs Yohendra Nadarajan at the High Court here yesterday, they said that these issues did not disclose a reasonable defence against their case and were irrelevant.

Further, the voters said, they did not arise from statements filed in their statement of claim last year.

“Paragraphs 13 to 20 of the defence are statements which are outrageous, degrading in nature and are done with the intention to paint a bad picture, simply to prejudice a party that is not named in this suit,” they said in reference to Anwar.

High Court’s 96-page judgment on why Malaysia’s 1986 ‘Allah’ ban was quashed

Explainer: High Court’s 96-page judgment on why Malaysia’s 1986 ‘Allah’ ban was quashed in Jill Ireland's case

KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — The High Court recently quashed the Home Ministry’s 1986 total ban of the word “Allah” in all Christian publications in Malaysia, but how and why did the court arrive at such a decision?

Malay Mail went through the full grounds of the March 10 judgment — numbering 96 pages in total, and made available on March 17— to try and answer those questions.

But first, the facts of the case to help you understand the judgment:

The facts
Jill Ireland Lawrence Bill, a Sarawakian of the Melanau tribe, went through Malaysia’s national education system where she was taught in Bahasa Malaysia.

Jill Ireland and her family use Bahasa Malaysia to practise their Christian faith — including in their prayers — while also using the Alkitab (or the Bible) in Bahasa Indonesia as well as written and audio-visual materials in Bahasa Indonesia.

While some Muslims in Malaysia believe the word “Allah” to be exclusive to Islam, the Arabic word had long been adopted into Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia to refer to God, and is also part of terms in the indigenous languages of natives in Sabah and Sarawak that refer to God. Such use can be traced back to hundreds of years ago, well before the Home Ministry’s written directive in 1986 to ban such usage.

On May 11, 2008, Jill Ireland had eight educational compact discs (CDs) — each containing the word “Allah” in their titles — for her personal religious use when she landed in Malaysia upon her return from Indonesia, but all eight were seized by the Customs Department which then referred the case to the Home Ministry.

Bring back truly independent IPCMC Bill to hold police accountable

Bring back truly independent IPCMC Bill to hold police accountable, Suaram tells govt following ‘cartel’ exposé

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 — Only a truly discrete Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) would hold the police accountable following the revelation of the prevalence of corruptible practices within the law enforcement agency, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) said today.

Following allegations of the existence of a corrupt cartel within the police force as revealed by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, Suaram therefore said it was necessary for the government to do away with the proposed Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) Bill which it tabled in August last year.

Instead, the government should reinstate the now-scrapped IPCMC Bill proposed under the previous Pakatan Harapan administration.
“The IPCMC will provide an independent body that will help investigate cases of police misconduct at every level, from the lowest officers to the very senior members of the Royal Malaysian Police.
