Trump's turbulent and lawless presidency will end with historic second impeachment |

(CNN)The fateful moment when the House of Representatives on Wednesday impeaches President Donald Trump for a second time will rank among the defining moments of America's story long after the citizens enduring these harrowing, tragic days are gone.
A cascade of bewildering episodes -- starting with Trump's refusal to accept his election defeat and encompassing his incitement of a mob assault on Congress -- has shattered long-held assumptions of the unassailability of government by the people, for the people. Save for the fracturing of the union before the Civil War, this country's system of political checks and balances has never before been under the kind of strain imposed by an autocratic President desperate to cling to power.
A sense of unfolding history is magnified by growing evidence that America is fighting for democracy itself in a struggle that will endure after Trump leaves office next week at the latest. New warnings of violence by pro-Trump extremists in 50 states and militias on the march toward Washington are instigating the most oppressive sense since 9/11 that the homeland is under threat. But this time the danger to US freedom comes not from a foreign terrorist group but radicalized Americans.

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 — US Vice President Mike Pence yesterday told House leaders he does not support invoking the 25th Amendment process to remove Donald Trump, all but guaranteeing an imminent impeachment vote against the president.
“With just eight days left in the President’s term, you and the Democratic Caucus are demanding that the Cabinet and I invoke the 25th Amendment,” Pence wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, referring to the process that would declare Trump unable to fulfill his duties and install Pence as acting president for the remainder of the term.

I never met Umno leaders, says DAP’s Loke on Annuar’s latest claim |

PETALING JAYA: DAP organising secretary Loke Siew Fook has denied Annuar Musa’s claims that he had met with Umno leaders to discuss political cooperation between the two parties.
“No, I have never met any Umno leaders to discuss any cooperation between Umno and DAP,” he told the media briefly as he left a Pakatan Harapan (PH) meeting at PKR’s headquarters here today.
When asked if this meant that Annuar was lying about his claims, the Seremban MP declined to comment.
Annuar, who was recently removed as Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, had repeated his claim that several Umno leaders had met Loke to discuss political cooperation between the two rival parties.

Emergency an admission of defeat by Muhyiddin, says Nazri |

KUALA LUMPUR: Today’s announcement of an emergency by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is an admission of defeat and shows he has lost the majority support, Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz said.
Nazri, who withdrew his support for the Perikatan Nasional government, said that Muhyiddin has to call for a general election as he does not have the majority support of the Dewan Rakyat.
“But as we all know, how can we hold an election during the current Covid-19 pandemic?” he asked.
“For me, when he (Muhyiddin) applied for the emergency, it means he admitted he has lost and no longer enjoys majority support. It’s logical for him to ask for an emergency,” he said at a press conference here today.
Nazri is the second Umno MP to retract his support for the PN government after Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub did so last week.
Nazri said he expects two or three more MPs to withdraw their support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has not stated his stand but did not support the 2021 budget proposal by the PN government.
At his press conference, Nazri said he had received many complaints from Umno grassroots over the way the party had been treated by the government.
Citing how 143 Umno divisions had submitted motions urging the party to break ties with PPBM, he said the next step was only formalising the motions to make it the official party stand.
This involves tabling the motion at the Umno annual general assembly.
“The Umno annual general assembly scheduled for Jan 31 now cannot be held, so I decided to make an announcement today.

House Democrats introduce impeachment article against Trump for inciting Capitol attack - The House introduced an article of impeachment on Monday and plans to vote on it this week.
- Democrats charge President Trump with inciting an insurrection after a mob spurred by the president attacked the Capitol last week.
- The House plans to pass a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.
- The House could choose to delay sending the article of impeachment to the Senate, as it likely would not be able to hold a vote on convicting Trump until after he leaves office in eight days.

- Bitcoin and other digital coins tanked on Monday, wiping off some $150 billion from the entire cryptocurrency market.
- Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, fell over 10% from a day earlier to $34,200, according to Coin Metrics data.
- The sell-off in cryptocurrencies comes after a huge rally and perhaps signals some profit-taking from investors.
GUANGZHOU, China — Bitcoin and other digital coins tanked on Monday, wiping some $150 billion off the cryptocurrency market.
The market capitalization or value of the cryptocurrency market was $931 billion around 6:00 p.m. ET, down from $1.08 trillion a day earlier, according to Coinmarketcap.
Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, fell over 10% from a day earlier to $34,200, according to Coin Metrics data. It earlier sank to an intraday low of $30,863. Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, was down 15% to $1,060. It briefly tumbled below $1,000, hitting an intraday low of $945.
The sell-off in cryptocurrencies comes after a huge rally and perhaps signals some profit-taking from investors. Bitcoin is still up over 300% in the last 12 months and last week hit an all-time high just below $42,000.
“The correction we saw was expected as we believe the BTC price surge recently from under $20,000 to $40,000 in the past four weeks will induce sell pressure,” said Simons Chen, executive director of investment and trading at cryptocurrency financial services firm Babel Finance.
The $40,000 mark could have been a trigger for profit-taking, Chen said.
Bitcoin’s resurgence has been attributed to a number of factors including more buying from large institutional investors.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — Malaysians reacted with frustration to the government’s announcement of a renewed lockdown to contain Covid-19 yesterday, which was delivered without any financial support or clarity over what rules will apply from tomorrow.
While most were resigned to the return of the movement control order (MCO) that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced, many noted the change in the tone of his delivery as well as the absence of assistance for those who could be left with no income for the duration of the lockdown.
Online, Malaysians pointed out that Muhyiddin eschewed the use of fictional characters such as Makcik Kiah, Pak Salleh, Kak Radziah and others that he previously peppered throughout his frequent special addresses last year.
More notably, however, they expressed concern over the lack of financial support to accompany what has been dubbed “MCO 2.0” even when consequences could be more severe now as Malaysians and businesses have exhausted their savings.
