PETALING JAYA: The Perikatan Nasional government will always be unstable as there are two core Malay parties fighting for dominance, says an analyst.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said these two parties were Umno and PPBM, both currently part of the ruling administration.

“You have two tigers on the same mountain, and that mountain can only support one,” he said, referring to a popular Chinese proverb.

Chin was speaking at the 2021 Malaysia Outlook and Economic Forum jointly organised by the KSI Institute For Asia Pacific and the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry this morning.

Aziz Bari to be questioned by cops over comments on Emergency

PETALING JAYA: Perak DAP deputy president Aziz Bari may be facing police action over comments on the emergency and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that he made during a Facebook live event.

He said he has been made to understand police reports have been lodged against him.

“My service centre received a call from Bukit Aman this morning on my comments on the King. The did not say which law they are investigating me under,” he told FMT.

The constitutional expert said he would likely be questioned over his response to queries during a Facebook live last month. “All I said (was what’s) stipulated in the Federal Constitution.

I can express my concerns without fear, says DAP man
Posted by: superadmin - 02-22-2021, 03:13 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: After police reports were lodged against him for his comments on the Federal Court’s decision on Malaysiakini last week, Klang MP Charles Santiago says he was only exercising his right to free speech.

The DAP leader said it was important to note that Article 10 of the Federal Constitution gives the country’s citizens the right to free speech and expression.

“I was, therefore, exercising my fundamental right,” he told FMT.

Santiago was responding to a Malaysiakini report that said investigation papers under the sedition and multimedia laws have been opened on him and Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan for comments made after the Federal Court found the news portal guilty of contempt last Friday.

Australia’s Treasury Wine Forced To Sell Brands & Assets – Profit Suffers 43% Drop

Australia’s Treasury Wine Forced To Sell Brands & Assets – Profit Suffers 43% Drop After China’s Tariffs Punishment
[Image: Treasury-Wine-Estates-Wine-China-Market.jpg]

Treasury Wine Estates is the world’s largest listed winemaker with total revenue of A$2.88 billion in 2019. The Australian company, with a market value of US$7.32 billion, operates in Australia and New Zealand, the Americas, Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Headquartered in Melbourne, Treasure Wine’s business is in the production and marketing of wine.

While the Americas accounted for around 40% of Treasury’s annual revenue in 2019, aggressive “discount war” in the U.S. market that saw oversupply of cheap wine had led the Australian wine giant to issue in January 2020 a warning to its earnings outlook for 2020. By contrast, the massive profitable Chinese market accounted for about a third of the company’s income.

MCA wants PM to reform AG's role after Malaysiakini case

MCA joined calls for reforms to the role of the attorney-general following the Federal Court’s decision which found news portal Malaysiakini in contempt of court over comments made by readers.

MCA civil society movement coordination bureau chairperson Ng Kian Nam said his party was worried that the decision sets a dangerous precedent that suppresses the freedom of speech.

He added that Attorney-General Idrus Harun (above) shouldered responsibility for initiating the contempt proceedings.

“Ultimately, Idrus who initiated the controversial contempt of court suit against Malaysiakini editors deserves some rebuke as he is the initiator of the problem, having brought the Malaysian judiciary to shame and undermined freedom of speech in Malaysia,” Ng said in a statement.

Simplified: The 'Malaysiakini' decisions in the Federal Court — what the judges decided and why it matters

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — News outlet Malaysiakini on Friday found itself held liable and fined RM500,000 by the Federal Court for the contemptuous comments of five readers that were hosted on its website in June 2020.

With a seven-member panel at the Federal Court examining the case, there was a split decision as six judges found Malaysiakini guilty of contempt of court for facilitating the five subscribers’ comments, while one judge disagreed that the 21-year-old news site should be held guilty.

Here’s a brief chronology of events that led to the Federal Court rulings on Friday according to news reports and court documents, and a quick look at how and why the judges arrived at the decisions.

1. The facts
On the morning of June 9, 2020, the prosecution informed the High Court that it was withdrawing all 46 corruption and money-laundering charges against former Sabah chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman, which then resulted in the High Court acquitting the politician.

Later, on the same day past noon, news portal Malaysiakini published a news report titled “CJ orders all courts to be fully operational from July 1”, which was regarding a press release by the chief justice of Malaysia on the operation of courts in line with the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

Subscribers of Malaysiakini then posted comments under this news report in the comments section on its website, including the five comments which, among others, contained criticisms against the judiciary and the chief justice over Musa’s acquittal. This was despite the acquittal being due to the prosecution’s decision to drop the charges (which was explained later in the day by the attorney general as due to the unavailability of certain documentary evidence and witnesses).

According to Malaysiakini, comments can only be made by active paying subscribers, with such comments posted automatically on its website without any prior manual moderating, and with only a filter software to disallow comments from being uploaded if foul words from a list by Malaysiakini’s editors are detected.

After they are published, the system will detect any comments with “suspected words” and flag the comment to the moderator for review, while a peer-review process allows other readers to flag or report offending comments seen on the website which will then result in an editor reviewing and deciding whether to remove the comment.

Malaysiakini said no readers had reported these comments and the comments did not carry any of the “suspected words” that Malaysiakini’s filter software could detect.

Malaysiakini had said it was not aware of the five comments until June 12 at 12.45pm when it was alerted by the police as to investigations into the comments, with Malaysiakini’s editorial team then immediately reviewing the comments and removing these and other comments at 12.57pm on the same day.

PAS-Umno showdown looms in several states
Posted by: superadmin - 02-21-2021, 10:59 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A showdown between Muafakat Nasional (MN) partners looms in at least four states around the country, with Terengganu Umno set to contest all seats in the state at the next general election.

Umno’s coalition partner PAS holds 22 of the 32 seats in the state assembly and six of the eight parliamentary seats.

Showdowns are already imminent in Johor, where Umno is not ready to give up any seats to PAS, and in states like Perak and Selangor where the two parties are already at loggerheads.

In Terengganu, Umno has declared it would contest all the seats, both state and parliamentary.

Elaine Nathaniel: The dedicated councillor and pride of Section 17 PJ
Posted by: superadmin - 02-21-2021, 10:54 AM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - No Replies

[Image: essentials-lifestyle-emel-pic-200221-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: For most Malaysians with families to look after and a career to balance, the idea of taking on community duties can be downright daunting.

After all, why take on a thankless task which will give you little to no reward in return? Plus, community work is a heavy burden that requires huge investments of time and energy.

But for Elaine Nathaniel, a Section 17 Petaling Jaya resident, that burden was a challenge that she had to tackle for the greater good of her community.

When she was first asked to become a councillor with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) back in 2016, the mother of two who also happens to work full-time at a local bank considered her options.
