Malaysiakini is reaching out to the public to help it raise RM500,000 after the Federal Court convicted the news organisation of contempt of court.
The sum - which is more than the RM200,000 sought by the Attorney-General's Chambers - must be paid within three working days, by next Wednesday (Feb 24).
Contempt proceedings against Malaysiakini and its editor-in-chief Steven Gan were initiated by Attorney-General Idrus Harun over comments left by readers on the news website.
The 6-1 majority decision cannot be appealed. The Federal Court did not convict Gan.

Decision against Malaysiakini comes under fire |

PETALING JAYA: The Federal Court’s decision to impose a RM500,000 fine on Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd, the company which runs Malaysiakini, for contempt of court over comments by the news portal’s readers has not gone down well, with many taking to social media to criticise the sentence.
Even the foreign missions have weighed in. In a joint statement, British high commissioner Charles Hay and acting Canadian high commissioner Esther Van Nes expressed concern over the court’s verdict.
“Media freedom is of fundamental importance to the security, prosperity and wellbeing of all societies. People must be allowed to discuss and debate issues freely,” they said.
Political analyst Bridget Welsh said on Twitter that the ruling would have negative repercussions for Malaysia in terms of freedom of all media platforms, adding that it would “further chill already cooling foreign investment”.

Malaysiakini seeks public donation to pay RM500,000 fine Wednesday, editor speaks of ‘chilling effect’
PUTRAJAYA, Feb 19 ― News portal Malaysiakini said today it will be holding a fundraising campaign to ensure it will be able to pay the RM500,000 fine imposed by the Federal Court for contempt of court over the hosting of five readers’ comments against the judiciary.
Malaysiakini’s editor-in-chief Steven Gan, who was found not guilty in contempt of court in the same case, expressed his disappointment on the Federal Court’s decision today for the “chilling effect” it would have on freedom of expression in Malaysia.
“We were very disappointed with the decision. The decision flies in the face of the fast-changing new media landscape in this country, will have tremendous chilling effect on discussions of issues of public interest and it delivers a body blow to our campaign, our continual campaign to fight corruption among others,” he told reporters when met at the lobby of the Palace of Justice.
Gan said the approach to be taken should be to educate Malaysians instead of “punish” media organisations like Malaysiakini for comments made by readers.

(CNN)The NASA Perseverance rover safely landed on Mars after its 292.5 million-mile journey from Earth, the agency confirmed at 3:55 p.m. ET Thursday. The rover landed itself flawlessly, according to the mission's team.
"Percy," as the spacecraft is affectionately called at mission control, sent back its first images of the landing site immediately after touchdown, which shows the rover's shadow on the surface of its landing site of Jezero Crater.
The rover has been on a nearly 300 million-mile journey since it left Earth more than 6 months ago. Perseverance and her teams lived up to the namesake, overcoming the challenges of preparing for the journey's final stages during a pandemic.
"This landing is one of those pivotal moments for NASA, the United States, and space exploration globally -- when we know we are on the cusp of discovery and sharpening our pencils, so to speak, to rewrite the textbooks," said acting NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk.

Federal Court decides ‘Malaysiakini’ in contempt of court over readers’ comments, but finds its editor Steven Gan not guilty
PUTRAJAYA, Feb 19 — The Federal Court today decided that Malaysiakini is in contempt of the judiciary over the hosting of the contemptuous comments of five of its readers on the news portal’s website.
Contempt of court can be punished by imprisonment or fine or both, with Malaysiakini having previously noted that there were no legal limits to the imprisonment period or the amount of the fine.
Steven Gan, who is the news portal’s editor-in-chief, was present in the courtroom today when the Federal Court delivered its decision.
Court of Appeal president Datuk Rohana Yusuf, who chaired the Federal Court’s seven-man panel, delivered the majority decision by six judges that found Malaysiakini guilty.

(CNN)Demi Lovato is under no obligation to share the deeply personal story of her struggle with mental health and addiction with the public, but the singer is choosing to do it on her own terms in a new four-part YouTube documentary, the trailer for which was released on Wednesday.
The trailer for "Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil" previews Lovato's journey prior to and following her near fatal overdose in 2018 and reveals the singer suffered multiple strokes and a heart attack.
"My doctors said that I had five to ten more minutes," she says in the documentary, speaking about the incident.
In a call with press on Wednesday as part of the Television Critics Association press tour, Lovato said she still deals with the aftermath of her medical emergency.

KOTA KINABALU, Feb 18 — Signs of unhappiness have been leaking out from the component parties of the newly cobbled-together Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition here barely six months after it won the state election.
Sabah Umno chief Datuk Bung Mokhtar declared earlier this week that his party wishes to contest more than half of the parliamentary seats in Sabah, colliding with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s targets.
Now, another component party has said that its members are unhappy due to the unequal distribution of power.
There are rumblings from party members of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) over political appointments to state government-linked companies (GLCs), native court and village leadership posts that they felt were not fair.

After 68 years in prison, America's oldest juvenile lifer was released |

(CNN)Joe Ligon, believed to be the oldest and longest-serving juvenile lifer in the United States, has been released from a Pennsylvania prison after spending nearly seven decades behind bars.
Ligon was incarcerated in February 1953 at the age of 15, given a mandatory life sentence after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a robbery and stabbing spree in Philadelphia with four other teenage boys. The crime left six people wounded and two people -- identified by the Philadelphia Inquirer as Charles Pitts and Jackson Hamm -- dead.
"I got caught up, in terms of being in the streets," Ligon told CNN after his release last week.
While a so-called degree of guilt hearing found Ligon guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, and Ligon admitted to stabbing at least one of the eight people stabbed that day, his attorney Bradley Bridge told CNN that his client maintains he never killed anyone.
"The child that committed those crimes back in 1953 no longer exists. The person that came out of prison in 2021 is 83 years old, has grown, changed, and is no longer a threat," Bridge said. "He has amply repaid society for the damage and harm that he did. And now, it's appropriate that he spends the last years of his life in freedom."
"I'm a grownup now," Ligon said. "I'm not a kid anymore. Not only am I a grown man, I'm an old man and getting older every day."
Ligon's road to release has been a long one.
In the 1970s, Ligon and his accomplices were granted the option of clemency from Pennsylvania's governor. While two of the men chose to accept the offer, clemency meant being on parole, which Ligon rejected.
