Malaysia slips 2 points in annual global corruption index
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2021, 05:06 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: TI-M-president-Muhammad-Mohan-FMT-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s score in Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perception Index 2020 (CPI 2020) dipped two points, a stark contrast to the improvement seen after the 14th general election.

The country scored 51 out of 100 in the latest report. In 2019, it had reached a score of 53, a significant increase from 47 before the 2018 polls – the lowest since the methodology was revised in 2012.

With the latest drop in the score, Malaysia now ranks 57th in the world, from 51st previously, falling behind Saudi Arabia, Mauritius and Italy.

Presenting the 2020 CPI, Transparency International Malaysia president Muhammad Mohan said that while the two-point drop was “statistically insignificant” due to the 1.6% margin of error, the result should not be dismissed.

Pakatan secretariat: Lawmakers suing PM to uphold rule of law, supremacy of Constitution

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 — The lawsuits filed against the prime minister over the suspension of Parliament and state assembly sittings during the Emergency by three Opposition lawmakers is aimed at upholding the rule of law and supremacy of the Federal Constitution, Pakatan Harapan (PH) said today.

In a statement, the PH Secretariat Council confirmed today a court challenge was filed yesterday by Parti Amanah Negara’s Pulai MP and Simpang Jeram state assemblyman Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, PKR’s Sungai Petani MP and Gurun state assemblyman Datuk Johari Abdul, and DAP’s Tebing Tinggi state assemblyman Abdul Aziz Bari.

“The lawsuit is not meant to challenge the Emergency Proclamation which has been declared on January 11.

“The application was filed to determine whether the clauses under the Emergency Ordinance which allowed for the suspension of Parliament and state assemblies is lawful and in line with the Federal Constitution,” the secretariat said in the statement.

Umno’s leadership woes won’t end with Zahid quitting, says insider
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2021, 03:10 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An Umno insider says the party’s biggest problem is its leadership but removing president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is not the “silver bullet” it needs.

Speaking to FMT, the Umno leader, who declined to be named, said this was obvious to its leaders and grassroots.

There have been increasing calls for Zahid to resign as president, and while the insider says Umno will benefit from being led by someone who is not facing trial, the party’s top leaders are still very much in the picture.

“It is nothing personal against the current leadership, but some perceptions, true or otherwise, just can’t be changed no matter what we do.”

Germany bid farewell to Merkel with six minutes of warm applause
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2021, 02:12 PM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - Replies (1)

The Germans elected her to lead them, and she led 80 million Germans for 18 years with competence, skill, dedication and sincerity.

During these eighteen years of her leadership of the authority in her country, no transgressions were recorded against her .. She did not assign any of her relatives a secretary .. She did not claim that she was the maker of glories .. She did not  get millions out of her, nor did anyone cheer her life, she did not receive charters and pledges, she did not fight those who preceded her and did not dissolve her. The blood of her fellow countrymen .. She did not utter nonsense .. She did not appear in the alleys of Berlin to be photographed.

Are Zahid, senior Umno leaders knowingly sowing chaos within own ranks?

Are Zahid, senior Umno leaders knowingly sowing chaos within own ranks? Party insiders seem to think so

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 — While it is common for factions to form within a party, in the case of Umno, any complot is usually kept in check by the steady hand of its supreme council and party president.

However, recent infighting and senior party leaders openly taking pot shots at each other in the media indicate that discipline is at an all-time low.

Many might argue that Umno’s current instability can be traced back to its resounding defeat in the 14th general election.

Yet, party insiders indicate that, in fact, all roads lead to party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and senior party figures.

YOURSAY | Tommy Thomas’ shocking revelation
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2021, 01:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Vijay47: The one part of this shocking news that is confusing and just doesn’t add up is the fact that despite Mahathir’s demand that Thomas resign his one-day tenure as the attorney-general, Thomas stayed on at his post.

He was compelled to finally step down only when Mahathir betrayed the very government that he himself had set up and Harapan became another victim in Mahathir’s long line of victims.

With the prime minister asking for his head, how did Thomas survive for 20 months? Perhaps we will learn the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth when the book hits the stands on Jan 30.

But when we consider Mahathir’s role in the entire plot, no one will be surprised at the deceit itself, perhaps surprised only at lack of logic which seems to accompany the aged former prime minister with devastating frequency of late.

The absurdity of Mahathir’s resignation demand becomes more evident when we reduce to basic simplicity the entire sequence from the establishment of the Harapan government to the almost inevitable stab-in-the-back from Mahathir’s dagger.

Mahathir submits to the Agong only one name for AG - Thomas. That must mean that Mahathir meant business, he would brook no protest from any quarter. The king grants his assent.

Yet the very next day, Mahathir wants Thomas to resign, quoting savage opposition from the Malays as the reason for the demand. The berserk Malay response occurred within a day of the AG’s appointment?

Did Mahathir, with his doctor’s finger deep on the Malay pulse, believe that the Malays, after two generations of being mollycoddled and having all their whims and fancies served to them on a silver platter, would accept a non-Malay in any position of responsibility? He did not believe an Indian-Christian as attorney-general would spook the Malays?

So why did he submit Thomas’ name? And right after the Agong agreed, why did Mahathir ask for Tommy to step down?

The other issue that has not yet surfaced is Lim Guan Eng. Surely the Malays would have been equally amok at his appointment as finance minister. Why did Mahathir not ask him to resign? Or did he?

We look forward to your book also, Lim.

Apple just had the best quarter in the history of the smartphonea
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2021, 11:46 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

Welcome to the super cycle: Apple just had the best quarter in the history of the smartphone
  • The iPhone is booming: Sales were up 17% year-over-year to a whopping $65.6 billion in a single quarter.
  • Research firm IDC estimates that Apple shipped more phones during the quarter than any other smartphone vendor ever has in a single quarter.
  • Apple’s dominant quarter is adding fuel to the so-called “super cycle” investor thesis that suggests that every few years, Apple’s new phones are timed to ride a wave of of must-have upgrades to strong growth.

Apple reported blowout earnings on Wednesday. Even during a global pandemic, every single product line was up, leading to the company’s first quarter with over $100 billion in sales.

But Apple is still best known for the iPhone, which accounted for nearly 59% of the company’s revenue during the holiday quarter. The iPhone is booming, too: Sales were up 17% year-over-year to a whopping $65.6 billion in a single quarter. That’s a big improvement from last year’s holiday quarter, when sales were up only 7.6% from the year ago.

Apple doesn’t provide unit sales for its products anymore, but according to an estimate from research firm IDC, Apple shipped 90.1 million phones during the quarter. That’s the largest number in any single quarter since IDC started tracking smartphones, analyst Francisco Jeronimo said.

Goldman Sachs CEO Solomon pays price of 1MDB scandal
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2021, 10:14 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

NEW YORK: Goldman Sachs chief executive David Solomon’s annual pay fell by US$10 million, or 36%, in 2020, according to regulatory disclosures filed on Tuesday, reflecting the bank’s role in the 1MDB scandal.

Solomon will receive US$17.5 million for his work during the year, compared with US$27.5 million the year before, the bank said.

Goldman previously announced it would reduce Solomon’s pay, along with that of chief financial officer Stephen Scherr and chief operating officer John Waldron, in light of the findings of investigations into the bank’s role in the affair.

The scandal dates to the government of former prime minister Najib Razak, which set up 1MDB in 2009.
