Renewable energy surpassed fossil fuels for European electricity in 2020
Posted by: superadmin - 01-25-2021, 09:07 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

History made: Renewable energy surpassed fossil fuels for European electricity in 2020

New York (CNN Business)Europeans got more of their electricity from renewable sources than fossil fuels for the first time last year, according to an annual report from Ember and Agora Energiewende.

The report, which has been tracking EU's power sector since 2015, found that renewables delivered 38% of electricity last year, compared to 37% delivered by fossil fuels.

The shift comes as other sources, such as wind and solar power, have risen in the European Union. Both sources have nearly doubled since 2015, and as of last year accounted for one-fifth of electricity generation in EU countries, the report found. It's also the reason why coal power declined 20% last year, making up only 13% of electricity generated in Europe.

MP SPEAKS | Questioning emergency does not make one a traitor
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2021, 05:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MP SPEAKS | Emergency, by its very nature, would create a bad impression, irrespective of how noble the government's intention is to have it in the first place.

For sure, it manages to accumulate all the negative repercussions. It scares and bewilders everybody, especially current and future investors. In the Malaysian context, it denotes the suspension of the Constitution and, by extension, the rule of law.

Covid-19 has been here for some time now and the government has been introducing some measures such as the movement control order (MCO), the enhanced MCO and even a total lockdown.

Partial emergencies were also implemented in some places with the sole aim of containing the spread of this virus. And nobody objected to such measures taking place.

Hamzah set ‘support PN and we’ll approve Muda’ condition, claims Syed Saddiq
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2021, 02:06 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Syed-Saddiq-Hamzah-Zainuddin-240121.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: In an explosive claim in a court affidavit, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman revealed that home minister Hamzah Zainudin had “enticed” him to support the government if he wanted his new party Muda’s registration to be approved.

The former youth and sports minister said this happened in the Dewan Rakyat during the Budget session when he brought up the matter with Hamzah since the Registrar of Societies (RoS) came under his purview.

“He told me that I had never voted in support of government bills as an MP,” Syed Saddiq said in his affidavit in support of obtaining leave for a judicial review application over the refusal of the RoS to register Muda.

Syed Saddiq said the minister went on to say that even if he opposed government bills, he should stay away from the Dewan Rakyat when voting took place.

Putrajaya mulls total economic shutdown after Feb 4 if Covid numbers don't improve

Putrajaya mulls total economic shutdown after Feb 4 if Covid numbers don't improve, Eurocham Malaysia tells its members

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — Putrajaya is set to announce a total economic shutdown after February 4, should the number of Covid-19 cases in the nation continue to not show any improvement, the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Eurocham Malaysia) said in a letter issued to its members.

A source linked to the organisation confirmed the authenticity of the letter with Malay Mail.

The letter detailed a summary of Eurocham Malaysia chief executive Sven Schneider's meeting with the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), which mentioned that the Ministry of Health (MOH) “has made a clear stand on the matter of a complete shutdown of the economy”.

“Should the infection rate not decrease, the Malaysian government will announce a shutdown/strict lockdown immediately after February 4, 2021. This is the current situation we are facing and Miti is appealing to all companies, foreign and local, to join the effort of reducing infections, breaking the chain, to keep the economy open for business,” the letter further read.

Wuhan returns to normal as world still battles deadly Covid pandemic
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2021, 11:05 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

  • Life has largely returned to normal in the city of 11 million, even as the rest of the world grapples with the spread of the virus’ more contagious variants.
  • Efforts to vaccinate people for COVID-19 have been frustrated by disarray and limited supplies in some places. The scourge has killed more than 2 million people worldwide.
  • Wuhan accounted for the bulk of China’s 4,635 deaths from COVID-19, a number that has largely stayed static for months.

Big gatherings vs faith and good judgment
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2021, 09:41 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

The huge Friday prayer congregation at a mosque in Seremban last week could and should have been avoided.

Understandably, it is not easy to maintain the sense of spiritual connection when one must change the way one worships.

But it doesn’t make one any less faithful to have both faith and good judgment.

The horror of seeing a video clip that went viral showing a massive crowd in the compound of the mosque in Kampung Sentosa reflects something deeply callous about collectively fighting a pandemic.

The lockdown is not going as planned, to put it mildly; leniency and arbitrary decisions have shredded Covid-19 safety guidance.

Blindness to the rules is what makes some people act selfishly while others are more responsible.

Yet the government seems to have given leeway to its public relations battle while at the same time imposing stringent measures to protect the community.

While this column respects Friday prayers at mosques, this is a pointed reminder that large assemblies of people at a single place means the virus will find its way into the community and cause much damage.

Large gatherings during the movement control order period are disallowed. No exceptions.

Coronavirus: UK variant 'may be more deadly'
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2021, 09:30 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: _116637543_a42c1012-1cbc-461f-81bf-e6e751fa1da0.jpg]

Early evidence suggests the variant of coronavirus that emerged in the UK may be more deadly, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

However, there remains huge uncertainty around the numbers - and vaccines are still expected to work.

The data comes from mathematicians comparing death rates in people infected with either the new or the old versions of the virus.
The new more infectious variant has already spread widely across the UK.

Mr Johnson told a Downing Street briefing: "In addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant - the variant that was first identified in London and the south east - may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.

"It's largely the impact of this new variant that means the NHS is under such intense pressure."

S’pore RTS station to be 10 times bigger than an MRT stop
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2021, 06:29 PM - Forum: International News - No Replies

[Image: The-Woodlands-North-RTS-Station-fb-230121-1.jpg]

SINGAPORE: The Woodlands North Station in Singapore for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link will be about 10 times the size of a typical Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, according to the republic’s transport minister Ong Ye Kung.

He said this was because the station will include a customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) building, where travellers can clear documentation with one stop.

Singapore on Friday broke ground for the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link at the Woodlands North site.

This came exactly two months after Malaysia had its ground-breaking ceremony at the Bukit Chagar CIQ site on Nov 22 last year.

With MCO clock ticking, still no light at end of Covid-19 tunnel for Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 01-20-2021, 10:37 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 — The first week of the movement control order (MCO) has not brought the needed reprieve for Malaysia’s besieged healthcare system, with Covid-19 cases not only remaining high but also expected to climb further.

In his latest briefing on the country’s Covid-19 situation when he reported 3,631 more infections, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah warned the country that daily case numbers would still rise in coming days.

Critically, he also disclosed that the number of category four and five Covid-19 patients — those with respiratory infections requiring ventilators and those critically ill with accompanying organ issues — were now five times what they had been at the height of last year’s second wave.

The two categories as well as patients with severe acute respiratory infections in category three must be hospitalised for treatment, adding further pressure to the country’s capacity to accommodate active cases that were now just a hair under 40,000.
