The high cost of not understanding the economy |

With the enforcement of the second movement control order (MCO 2.0), the debate about saving lives or saving the economy has returned. It seems we are forced to choose between a lockdown which can help save lives while harming the economy and keeping the economy open but with the possibility of increasing the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths.
However, after one year of dealing with the pandemic, we can conclude that such debate is unnecessary.
First of all, there is a growing number of scientific evidence showing there is no correlation between lockdowns and Covid-19 deaths. Second, the economy is not an abstract entity but rather it is made of human lives too. The choice is, at best, lives vs lives.

- A CNBC analysis of President Trump’s tweets since he was inaugurated found that his most popular and frequent posts largely spread disinformation and distrust.
- Of Trump’s 10 most popular tweets, four contained false claims related to the 2020 election results. Of his 100 most popular posts, 36 contained election-related falsehoods.
Following the U.S. Capitol riot, Twitter permanently banned President Donald Trump’s account “due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”
Blocked from using his preferred tool for public communication, Trump left behind 88 million followers, some 16,000 now-deleted tweets while in office, and a legacy of spreading disinformation and distrust on the platform.
A CNBC analysis of Trump’s tweets during his presidency found that his most popular and frequent posts largely spread disinformation and distrust. Many of his most-liked tweets contained falsehoods, while the topic he posted about most frequently, “fake news,” was a weapon for undermining information.
“Trump’s primary use of Twitter has been to spread propaganda and manipulate public opinion,” said Sam Woolley, director for propaganda research at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Media Engagement. “He used Twitter to delegitimize information or to delegitimize the positions of his opponents.”
Of Trump’s 10 most-popular tweets, four contained false claims related to the 2020 election results. Of his 100 most popular posts, 36 contained election-related falsehoods.

Previously charged with molest, Shahidan’s inclusion in select committee on women, children’s affairs slammed
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 — The inclusion of Arau MP Datuk Shahidan Kassim, who was once charged for molesting a 15-year-old girl, in the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (SSC) for women and children’s affairs has been criticised today.
DAP’s Lanang MP Alice Lau today said that the Umno MP had once even opposed the formation of the committee.
“I fought very hard for the formation of this SSC. Arau and Bintulu were the two out of seven house committee members who rejected it! He rejected the SSC and now he’s in SSC!
“Welcome Arau to SSC for Women & Children Affairs & Social Development,” she posted, with an angry emoji. Bintulu MP refers to Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing
Dewan Rakyat’s Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said this morning announced that the SSC had met online yesterday, and thanked the members for selecting her as its chairman.

Why use emergency when we freely offered help? asks medical group |

PETALING JAYA: The government’s decision to invoke emergency ordinances to use private healthcare assets to combat Covid-19 has left a medical group puzzled.
It says the sector has always been ready to assist in the fight against the pandemic and there was no need to use the emergency rules.
Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy CEO Azrul Mohd Khalib said the proclamation of an emergency appeared to involve harnessing the resources of the private sector, based on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s speech on Tuesday.
He said this could mean some private hospitals and medical facilities being requisitioned to increase the public health sector’s capacity for intensive care, beds and specialised personnel.

Now that Trump is impeached (again), what’s next? |

WASHINGTON, Jan 14 — The US House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump yesterday for a second time — just days before he is scheduled to leave office — raising questions about what happens next.
The House voted 232-197 to impeach the president, with 10 members of Trump’s Republican Party joining 222 Democrats.
Here are some of the possible scenarios after the House impeached Trump for inciting last week’s attack by his supporters on the US Capitol as Congress certified Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential election victory:
Senate trial
Now that Trump has been impeached, it is up to Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to submit the article of impeachment to the Senate at a time of her choosing.
The Senate would then hold a trial.
That’s what happened last year after Trump was impeached in 2019 by the Democratic-controlled House for pressuring the leader of Ukraine to dig up political dirt on Biden.
Trump was acquitted by the Republican-majority Senate in February 2020.
This time, however, Trump has only a week left in the White House and Biden is to be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on January 20.
The Senate is currently in recess and is not scheduled to return until January 19.

What can emergency do that MCO cannot? |

Kim Quek: The prime minister said that “the government needed certain powers to effectively combat the worsening Covid-19 pandemic”.
But there is nothing the current laws cannot do to combat the pandemic that the emergency can.
Unless Muhyiddin Yassin can specify these “certain powers” under the emergency that it will otherwise be denied, we will take it that his sudden impulse to declare the emergency was to pre-empt the spate of withdrawal of support to him from MPs coming his way.
In other words, he is only trying to save his own skin at the expense of the people as the state of emergency will certainly have a negative impact on the economy, causing even greater misery to the rakyat.
