Stocks & Currency Plunge As Emergency Rule Declared To Help Muhyiddin Cling To Power
Posted by: superadmin - 01-13-2021, 09:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Malaysia’s stocks and currency plunge on Tuesday after the King dramatically proclaimed an Emergency that will last until August 1, or until the current Covid-19 pandemic is brought under control. At 11am, the local Bursa Malaysia stock index plunged below 1,600 level, losing 25.34 points (1.6%) to 1,591.91. It has also spooked the local currency.

The U.S. dollar-Malaysian Ringgit pair hit a high of 4.072 – or around 0.54% higher than the previous close. The panic selling had prompted backdoor Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin rush to assure investors that the country remains “open for business”. In a televised address after the declaration, the PM took pains to explain that the emergency is not a military coup.

Selangor Islamic enforcers probed for violence against Nur Sajat in arrest for ‘insulting Islam’

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) said today it has summoned its enforcers involved in the recent alleged violence during arrest of cosmetics entrepreneur Nur Sajat last week.

In a statement, the department said it has been informed that Nur Sajat has since filed a police report over the incident, where she claimed she had been roughed up by the religious officers.

“The enforcers related to the matter have also been called in to give their statements on [Nur Sajat's] report,” Jais said in a statement.

It also confirmed that Nur Sajat is being investigated under Section 10 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, after several complaints were made against her in 2018 and 2020.

Section 10 refers to the Shariah offence of insulting Islam or causing Islam to be insulted either by mocking or blaspheming the faith and its associated practices and rituals either in a written, pictorial or photographic form.

Umno to decide on AGM in a few days, says sec-gen
Posted by: superadmin - 01-13-2021, 03:06 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno will decide whether it will proceed with its annual general assembly scheduled for the end of the month following the declaration of emergency and the movement control order (MCO).

“We will wait and see, just a few days more,” Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan told FMT.

The AGM is supposed to take place on Jan 31 and discuss resolutions passed by 189 of the 191 divisions which held their delegates’ meetings.

They include the resolution for Umno to cut ties and reject cooperation with PPBM in the coming general election and strengthen relations with PAS in Muafakat Nasional.

Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan had said the resolution needed to be brought to the AGM before the party’s top leadership could decide on the matter.

Yesterday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, declared a state of emergency to curb the spread of Covid-19, a day after the government announced MCO in five states and three federal territories, and a ban on interstate travel.

Trump's turbulent and lawless presidency will end with historic second impeachment
Posted by: superadmin - 01-13-2021, 02:21 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

(CNN)The fateful moment when the House of Representatives on Wednesday impeaches President Donald Trump for a second time will rank among the defining moments of America's story long after the citizens enduring these harrowing, tragic days are gone.

A cascade of bewildering episodes -- starting with Trump's refusal to accept his election defeat and encompassing his incitement of a mob assault on Congress -- has shattered long-held assumptions of the unassailability of government by the people, for the people. Save for the fracturing of the union before the Civil War, this country's system of political checks and balances has never before been under the kind of strain imposed by an autocratic President desperate to cling to power.

A sense of unfolding history is magnified by growing evidence that America is fighting for democracy itself in a struggle that will endure after Trump leaves office next week at the latest. New warnings of violence by pro-Trump extremists in 50 states and militias on the march toward Washington are instigating the most oppressive sense since 9/11 that the homeland is under threat. But this time the danger to US freedom comes not from a foreign terrorist group but radicalized Americans.

WASHINGTON: The US death toll from Covid-19 hit a new daily record of nearly 4,500, Johns Hopkins University said Tuesday evening.

As the health crisis rages out of control in the US, this was the first time the toll in the country hardest hit by the pandemic surpassed 4,000 in 24 hours.

The US recorded more than 235,000 new cases of coronavirus infection and 4,470 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins tally as of 8:30 pm.

Around 131,000 people are now hospitalised in the US with Covid-19, said the Covid Tracking Project.

US VP Pence rejects invoking 25th Amendment to oust Trump
Posted by: superadmin - 01-13-2021, 10:58 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 2021-01-07T183642Z_784951980_RC263L9VR58...-TRUMP.JPG]

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 — US Vice President Mike Pence yesterday told House leaders he does not support invoking the 25th Amendment process to remove Donald Trump, all but guaranteeing an imminent impeachment vote against the president.

“With just eight days left in the President’s term, you and the Democratic Caucus are demanding that the Cabinet and I invoke the 25th Amendment,” Pence wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, referring to the process that would declare Trump unable to fulfill his duties and install Pence as acting president for the remainder of the term.

I never met Umno leaders, says DAP’s Loke on Annuar’s latest claim
Posted by: superadmin - 01-12-2021, 09:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: DAP organising secretary Loke Siew Fook has denied Annuar Musa’s claims that he had met with Umno leaders to discuss political cooperation between the two parties.

“No, I have never met any Umno leaders to discuss any cooperation between Umno and DAP,” he told the media briefly as he left a Pakatan Harapan (PH) meeting at PKR’s headquarters here today.

When asked if this meant that Annuar was lying about his claims, the Seremban MP declined to comment.

Annuar, who was recently removed as Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, had repeated his claim that several Umno leaders had met Loke to discuss political cooperation between the two rival parties.

Emergency an admission of defeat by Muhyiddin, says Nazri
Posted by: superadmin - 01-12-2021, 03:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Today’s announcement of an emergency by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is an admission of defeat and shows he has lost the majority support, Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz said.

Nazri, who withdrew his support for the Perikatan Nasional government, said that Muhyiddin has to call for a general election as he does not have the majority support of the Dewan Rakyat.

“But as we all know, how can we hold an election during the current Covid-19 pandemic?” he asked.

“For me, when he (Muhyiddin) applied for the emergency, it means he admitted he has lost and no longer enjoys majority support. It’s logical for him to ask for an emergency,” he said at a press conference here today.

Nazri is the second Umno MP to retract his support for the PN government after Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub did so last week.

Nazri said he expects two or three more MPs to withdraw their support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has not stated his stand but did not support the 2021 budget proposal by the PN government.

At his press conference, Nazri said he had received many complaints from Umno grassroots over the way the party had been treated by the government.

Citing how 143 Umno divisions had submitted motions urging the party to break ties with PPBM, he said the next step was only formalising the motions to make it the official party stand.

This involves tabling the motion at the Umno annual general assembly.

“The Umno annual general assembly scheduled for Jan 31 now cannot be held, so I decided to make an announcement today.
