Several senior military officers have made clear they would take no part in any effort to overturn the results of an election that has been certified by every state and confirmed by the Electoral College.
“There is no role for the US military in determining the outcome of an American election,” Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and Army Chief of Staff James McConville said in a statement Friday.

COMMENT | Who do we blame for political mess we're in? |

Who is responsible for this mess we are in? It's not Anwar nor Harapan. One man is responsible. He, on his own, without consultation with Harapan leaders who put him in power, resigned unilaterally and caused this present mess.
Without respect for the more than 5.5 million Malaysians who voted out BN for the first time in our 61-year history, he frustrated our aspirations, dashed our dreams and crushed our hopes by throwing away what was a hard-fought victory. He nullified our mandate arrogantly.

COMMENT | Let me state my position clearly. This article is not written in favour of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim or to oppose him. I’m just trying to be rational.
Is this the end of the road for Anwar, as some suggest? Has he reached the end of his political career, as others claim?
I don’t think so. But some politicians seem to believe so while others are busy whipping up sentiments of hatred to get rid of Anwar for selfish reasons.
Some have even been arguing that he had lost the confidence of the opposition. How so? Was he defeated in a majority contest? There has been no such contest to confirm their claim.
A vote of confidence is only applicable when you have the majority but Anwar never had this majority in Parliament. So, what is the premise for this conclusion?
Paid cyber-troopers and trouble-shooters have been working full steam following the passage of Budget 2021. Their target is Anwar, creating the impression that he had blundered, otherwise the budget would have been defeated. They cite his last-minute instruction not to support the call for a bloc vote at the policy stage as a serious mistake.
They pretend as if the budget could have been defeated on Nov 26 at the second reading stage. Let’s get real. The opposition never had the numbers to defeat the budget. This has been amply demonstrated throughout the budget session.
All through the 11 occasions when a bloc vote was called for, they did not have the numbers and the vote went in favour of Perikatan Nasional (PN) every time. On Dec 15, on the 11th occasion when the bloc vote was called, the opposition’s best numbers were 108 against 111.
To start with, the numbers were not there and expecting the budget to be defeated was a pipe dream. If the failure to defeat the budget was in any way construed as a reflection on Anwar’s leadership, it is not correct.
It should rather be seen as a vote of no confidence in the entire opposition. Fixing the blame on an individual for a collective failure is foolish.

Women’s groups slam RM2,000 fine for a ‘horrifying’ assault |

PETALING JAYA: A women’s rights activist has criticised a RM2,000 fine handed down on a man who assaulted a woman driver who had honked at him, and said it sends a harmful message to Malaysians.
All Women’s Action Society programme and operations manager Nisha Sabanayagam called the event “horrifying” and said the offender’s punishment should have been accompanied by imprisonment and community service, as well as a requirement to attend anger management counselling.
She was commenting on the case of a man who was convicted for voluntarily causing hurt by repeatedly punching a woman in the face after confronting her about the honking once she had parked her car.
“By not providing punishment that is equivalent to the crime, the judge is sending a message that the legal system sees this form of gender-based violence as a small-time crime. This perpetuates the devaluation of women in society and their subordination to men,” she told FMT.

PETALING JAYA: DAP leader Ronnie Liu has urged Pakatan Harapan to remain united amid calls for a political reset.
The Sungai Pelek assemblyman said the coalition must work together and drop its “holier than thou” attitude to save the country.
In a statement, he reminded everyone that PH had only been able to take over the government due to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s reformasi movement.
“The injustice done to Anwar was the main reason why people rallied behind PH,” he said.
Liu said Anwar was willing to cooperate with others such as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his successor, Muhyiddin Yassin in the interest of the rakyat.
“Let us not allow the ‘Tok Dalang’ to put a wedge between all the partners while attracting more to join us if they want to work together.
“One can only accept their genuineness based on face value, and in the process, we know who played us out during the Sheraton Move.”
Liu warned that a political reset would not be possible unless there were changes to the overall political landscape in the country, which would require the cooperation of the government.
“In my opinion, a political reset can only help save the nation if it is also implemented by the parties that call themselves Perikatan Nasional (PN), Muafakat Nasional and Barisan Nasional.
“This pressure will have to come from the general populace, and their votes will ultimately set the tune to which the political leaders in this country will have to dance.”
Yesterday, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu called on PH to acknowledge that the opposition needed a reset, following its failure to stop the federal budget from being passed.
The two had claimed that PN backbenchers were “opportunistic” and only used PH for their own gain.

3,500 Americans died in one day. The President didn't mention it |

(CNN)Inoculations are happening, but more than 3,500 new Covid deaths were reported in the US on Wednesday, a single-day record.
Americans still very much in danger certainly are not getting cues or public leadership from President Donald Trump, who judging by his Twitter feed remains focused almost exclusively on his election loss rather than on the deaths occurring on his watch -- or the tortured effort on Capitol Hill to give aid to Americans hurt by the pandemic.
Read this passage from CNN's wrap of Covid news:
But as vaccinations begin, recorded cases, hospitalizations and deaths are rising to levels not previously seen, as hospital staff around the country warn they're running out of space and energy to provide sufficient care:
- Average cases: The country's average number of daily cases across a week was 215,729 on Wednesday -- a record high, Johns Hopkins University data show. That's more than three times what the daily case average was during a summer peak in July.
- Cases in one day: The US recorded 247,403 cases on Wednesday, a record for one day.
- Deaths: The nation averaged 2,569 deaths daily across the last week -- the highest average yet. The total reported Wednesday -- 3,656 -- is a one-day high.
- Hospitalizations: 113,090 Covid-19 patients were in US hospitals Wednesday -- the most recorded on a given day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.
Where are the most cases? Rhode Island this week is the state with the most new cases per population, followed by Ohio, North Dakota, Indiana, Tennessee, Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, South Dakota and Kansas in the top 10.
Where are the most deaths? Iowa had the most deaths per population, followed by North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas, Wyoming, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Colorado in the top 10.
Americans, the reports said, should understand "the clear risks of ANY family or friend interactions outside of their immediate household indoors without masks." That behavior has not been modeled by the White House, however, amid dozens of indoor holiday parties over the past two weeks.

PETALING JAYA: After an eventful, tumultous and acrimonious year, the relationship between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim is now beyond repair, says an analyst.
There is no chance of any future political cooperation between the two veterans as Mahathir clearly does not want Anwar to be prime minister, which remains the PKR president’s aspiration, according to James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute.
“It’s quite obvious that no matter what they say in public, Mahathir will never allow Anwar to be the prime minister.
“As long as Mahathir is alive, he will do anything he can to stop Anwar from becoming the prime minister. Therefore, I think Anwar realises that it’s impossible for them to get back together,” he told FMT.

Pundits: Failure to change Budget 2021 vote’s outcome shows Dr Mahathir, Ku Li’s influence waning
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — Despite their decades of experience in local politics, analysts believed that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and senior Umno MP Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah may now have little to offer in affecting the Malaysian political dynamic.
The political analysts polled said that the duo’s call for MPs to reject the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government’s Budget 2021 in its third reading vote and offer to assist a new government largely went ignored.
“On the positive side, their political experiences let them reach beyond political partisanship boundaries when they are willing to cooperate with any MPs. Especially in our political culture where political parties majorly define our political landscape instead of civil societies.
“However, their move to reject the Bill still failed to bring down Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and has shown that their influence, especially in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (which Dr Mahathir founded) and Umno (which Tengku Razaleigh is in) has corroded.

Opposition needs reset, say Guan Eng, Mat Sabu after failure to stop budget |

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu have called on Pakatan Harapan to stop wasting time on “opportunistic” Perikatan Nasional backbenchers who are exploiting them.
In a joint statement, Lim and Mohamad said PH must face the reality that the opposition needs a reset, following its failure to stop the federal budget from being passed.
“Yesterday’s vote has clearly shown that the 108 MPs opposed to PN are the same number that stayed firmly with PH in March 2020. Not a single government backbencher voted with PH, including those who allegedly support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“Clearly, these government backbenchers are adept at playing political games to gain maximum leverage from the PN government,” they said.
