Back to February 2020 for Malaysia as parties scramble to find a majority again |

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Seventeen-and-a-half months since Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was sworn in as prime minister, Malaysia finds itself in the same political impasse it was mired in then.
The calculators are in hand again, the horse-trading is already in full swing, as ordinary Malaysians are again subjected to undesired ringside seats to politicians searching for the magic number of MPs to guarantee their team takes the reins of power.
All this is happening amid unverified reports that Muhyiddin has already decided to quit as prime minister by tomorrow.
Muhyiddin was the ultimate winner after the “Sheraton Move” last year which saw his Bersatu pull out from the 22-month-old Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and form a new Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

PETALING JAYA: The political situation will remain uncertain for the foreseeable future if Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin resigns, according to an opposition MP and electoral reform group.
Amid growing speculation that Muhyiddin would announce his resignation as prime minister soon, Damansara MP Tony Pua said one of the possible outcomes could be a political impasse that would drag on.
“Number one, if no one has a majority, there will be a political impasse dragging us for a long time.
“Number two, a prime minister from Umno is appointed that could unite all Umno MPs and number three, a general election,” he said in a webinar organised by the electoral reform group Bersih 2.0.

PETALING JAYA: A political analyst says 23 Umno MPs who have backed Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government may find themselves not only out of favour with party grassroot members or party leaders but possibly even out of a seat.
Socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said Umno grassroot members prized loyalty among their political leaders.
“It will be tough going during elections for those who were extremely vocal against party leaders and sidelined the wishes of the grassroots,” he told FMT.
Awang Azman said those dissident MPs were likely to find themselves placed at constituencies in which they would have slim chances of winning. Some may not even get to defend a seat at the next general election.
“Grassroot Umno members may feel their leaders ditched them when their support was needed the most during the pandemic,” he said.

Sanusi v Sanusi – a case of class versus crass |

Intelligent, highly-educated, a man of books and very widely-read – those are words often used to describe Kedah menteri besar Sanusi.
A product of the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar, he was known for his brilliant mind and many achievements, both at federal and state levels.
Here are just some of his great qualities: fluent in German and Mandarin, and even Tamil, besides English and Bahasa Malaysia, of course.
Besides MCKK, he studied at the Institute of Bankers London, City of London College and the Institute of Export, London, besides getting his certificate in Foreign Trade and Foreign Exchange at the University of London.
I am, of course, talking about the late Sanusi Junid, the man who was menteri besar between 1996 and 1999.
He is the man credited with starting the International Book Village in Langkawi in an attempt to get the islanders to read more (or should that be: more islanders to read).
He was so into books that he practically turned his house into a library. Any photograph of Sanusi in his office would have the backdrop of more books.
When he spoke, people listened. He always knew what he was talking about and he had plenty of stories to tell.
Many who knew him tell of his love for Malaysia’s diversity and how he felt all ethnic minorities must be proud of their heritage, just as he was of his Acehnese roots.

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said has released an FAQ sheet on the formation of a minority government amid doubts over the support commanded by the prime minister.
In the FAQ, Azalina, the deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker says a sitting prime minister who has lost majority support cannot claim that he can lead a minority government.
“He has to resign as PM first, in accordance with Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution,” she said.
According to reports, 15 MPs from Umno have withdrawn support for Muhyiddin and his administration, either through public or statutory declarations, leaving the governing coalition with only about 100 MPs in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.

How do you get past the endless betrayals, Tony Pua? |

From Rahim Zainuddin
At the outset, let me say that I was not at all surprised by that shameful proposal of a bipartisan government put forward by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Friday evening.
It is something we have come to expect from a man who assumed the post via the backdoor and has since used all sorts of tactics to stay in power.
Friday was clearly the last throw of the dice for this desperado who for some reason or other cannot accept the fact that he is staring down the jaws of an unceremonious eviction from office within the next month.
Clutching at straws, his last proposal has been mocked by all and sundry. Time on his tenure is about to be called. “Abah and out,” it would seem!
Yet, for some reason or other, it seems like some of his biggest detractors are trying to prop him up. Step forward, DAP’s Tony Pua, whose own party was made the scapegoat in our prime minister’s unexpected rise to power.
The main question which I have for Pua is simply this: How do you get past the endless betrayals which this administration has practised on the rakyat, your party and its coalition partners?

PETALING JAYA: A series of U-turns by Umno MPs aligned to the present administration appears to be drawing the curtains on Muhyiddin Yassin’s tenure as the country’s eighth prime minister.
Speaking to FMT, several Umno and Bersatu sources said they are expecting Muhyiddin to announce his resignation soon.
“The resignation letter is ready, but we are not sure when he will make the announcement,” said one source on condition of anonymity.
Muhyiddin’s circumstances looked bleak yesterday when opposition parties and Umno rejected his proposal for reforms and a more inclusive administration in exchange for support in September’s parliamentary vote of confidence.
But things went from bad to worse as those in the Cabinet, including Umno and PAS ministers, voiced disapproval for the proposal that had apparently “caught them by surprise”.
Now, it is learnt that some Umno and PAS ministers are already looking at ways to make a face-saving U-turn.

King can use 2010 apex court ruling to ask PM to resign, says lawyer |

PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong can direct Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his Cabinet to tender their resignation in accordance with a legal principle established by the Federal Court in 2010, a lawyer said.
Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin said failure to do so would mean they are deemed to have vacated their offices automatically.
He said the King could then determine whether any other MP commands the confidence of the majority among the MPs and form a new government.
“Alternatively, the King can dissolve Parliament and form a caretaker government pending the holding of a general election,” he told FMT.
Firoz was referring to the dismissal of Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as menteri besar of Perak in February 2009 after the sultan came to the conclusion that he had lost majority support, based on extraneous factor.
