KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia lost an investment opportunity from Facebook Inc after being left out from the tech giant’s latest subsea cable system, people familiar with the matter told The Vibes.
Facebook in a statement yesterday announced its Apricot undersea cable system – a 12,000km-long cable that will connect Guam, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore.
The tech titan is expected to launch the cable system in 2024 “to meet rising data demands in the region and support existing cable systems, such as the recently announced Echo and Bifrost”.
Insiders claimed that missing out on this latest project is another blow to the country’s digital economy ambitions, after it was excluded from the Echo and Bifrost networks.
“What people need to understand is that, generally, it is bad for everyone when a subsea cable is down. This means less volume of data traffic, less money and increased loss of damages,” said a market participant.
They are pointing the finger at former transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong’s removal of the cabotage exemption policy, which was put in place by his predecessor, Anthony Loke.

PETALING JAYA: After the fall of the Muhyiddin Yassin-led Perikatan Nasional government, MPs were quick to turn their attention to what comes next: the appointment of their replacements by the next prime minister.
Speaking to FMT today, Klang MP Charles Santiago said he hopes for a quick resolution from the King.
“It’s unclear how long the process (of appointing a new prime minister) will take, but given the major problems we have with Covid-19, the state of our hospitals and unemployment, hopefully things will be resolved quickly,” the DAP man said.
“We can’t have this dragging on for weeks.”

PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as the eighth prime minister of Malaysia after immense pressure by Umno and other opposition parties demanding that he do so.
His resignation meant a proposed vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat in September is now moot and brings to an end the shortest tenure of a prime minister in Malaysia’s history.
FMT takes a look at the rise and fall of Muhyiddin Yassin.

PETALING JAYA: State Umno leaders have urged all party grassroots members and MPs to stand united behind party decisions.
In the joint statement by 13 state chiefs, they called on all members to abide by the party leadership and the guidelines stated in the party constitution.
This comes amid growing political instability now that the Perikatan Nasional coalition has fallen, after several ministers announced that the Cabinet had resigned.
This morning Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had a 30-minute audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Palace, where he is believed to have tendered his resignation.

PETALING JAYA: Top opposition party leaders including those from Sabah and Sarawak are having closed-door meetings after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation earlier today.
The ongoing meetings, with some held online and also at the PKR headquarters, are said to involve bigwigs of various parties after the Muhyiddin Cabinet quit today. Those at the PKR headquarters are from PKR, DAP and Amanah.
“There are talks within all opposition parties, including those from Sabah and Sarawak.
“Everyone in the meeting is hoping that there will be a unanimous show of support for the new prime minister so the new government has a solid majority to run the country,” a party insider told FMT.
He said opposition parties want a unity government as the Perikatan Nasional coalition had failed to manage the country.

PETALING JAYA: The cabinet has tendered its resignation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, ending the tenure of the Perikatan Nasional government, Khairy Jamaluddin has confirmed.
In an Instagram post, the science, technology and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin thanked Malaysians for the opportunity to serve the country.
His confirmation comes after intense speculation that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would tender his resignation during his audience with the King.
Meanwhile, Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal vowed that the PN administration will come back stronger.
“We stand tall and proud of you Tan Sri President. Thank you for your service and leadership,” he said in a Facebook post addressed to Muhyiddin.

PETALING JAYA: PAS is expected to revive its cooperation with Umno through Muafakat Nasional (MN) if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government collapses, says a political analyst.
Azmi Hassan said PAS’ contradicting stance of defending PN but supporting MN at the same time was just to buy time for the Islamist party’s longevity.
“It is likely that the Umno MPs who supported Muhyiddin Yassin before this will gradually decrease and PAS is predicted to return to MN with Umno,” he told FMT.
Azmi said Umno will accept PAS with open arms, just as it will with its own leaders who are currently leaning towards Muhyiddin.
“Umno pragmatically understands that they desperately need (the MPs’) support to move on to the next step,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has arrived at Istana Negara, where he is expected to offer his resignation as eighth prime minister to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong while the country’s political crisis reaches its peak.
The embattled Bersatu leader was seen entering the palace’s main gate at 12.23pm in his official vehicle for his scheduled audience with the king.
It is uncertain how the Agong will respond to Muhyiddin’s offer to resign, but if the latter does relinquish his position, he is expected to be immediately reappointed as caretaker prime minister until a replacement is sworn in.
This is similar to when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stepped down as the head of the administration in February last year and was made caretaker prime minister before Muhyiddin’s appointment.
Muhyiddin’s speculated resignation comes on the back of intense pressure from various quarters after he lost the confidence of the Dewan Rakyat following the withdrawal of more than a dozen Umno MPs earlier this month.
However, the prime minister has remained adamant that he still has the majority backing of MPs, and even promised to test his legitimacy in Parliament next month.

PETALING JAYA: The appointment of a prime minister from the present administration, should the incumbent Muhyiddin Yassin resign today, is a recipe for ‘Kerajaan Gagal 2.0’, says a political analyst.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the reality is that the downfall of the prime minister’s administration is not premised solely on Umno’s withdrawal of support for him.
“It’s also the incompetence of the government in handling the pandemic and reviving the economy,” he told FMT.
“We must not forget that Umno’s push to topple this government received a lot of support from its grassroots and the people.”
