MoH contact tracing appears outstripped by Delta: Boon Chye
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 02:27 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 18012021-KUL-_Dr_lee_boon_chye_-_filepix.jpg]

GEORGE TOWN – The new Covid-19 wave is probably driven by the Delta variant, which is believed to have outpaced the Health Ministry’s contact-tracing capabilities.

Former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye said Delta has made it almost impossible to mitigate infections due to its quick spread.

Malaysia today logged its highest-ever daily tally of 24,599 coronavirus cases, with Penang claiming 2,078.

Giving an example, Dr Lee said if 10 individuals were eating together in a hotel room with poor ventilation, all of them would have gotten infected if one person was an unsuspecting carrier of the Delta variant.

He told The Vibes that adopting preventive measures and ensuring everyone is vaccinated are the best way to stem infections.

“Public gatherings not involving food and drink are better than those that do, as everyone would be without a mask (in the latter situation).

What new Cabinet? It’s just a reshuffle, say MPs
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 02:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Hannah-Yeoh-n-Azalina-Othman-Said-collage-270821.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: MPs were not impressed by the new Cabinet line-up announced by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, with many pointing out that it was very similar to the previous one under Muhyiddin Yassin, with only minor reshuffles.

“It is really a game of musical chairs with the same people rotating offices in Putrajaya,” Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh told FMT.

Yeoh said Ismail’s Cabinet was not any better than Muhyiddin’s Cabinet.

“I am very upset that Pengerang MP Azalina Othman is not named as one of the ministers but I’m glad Takiyuddin Hassan is no longer the law minister. I hope Ismail will make Azalina the Dewan Rakyat speaker for greater check and balance.”

Yeoh, a former deputy women, family and community development minister, said she was disappointed with the decision to retain Rina Harun as the women, family and community development minister.

Quercetin supplementation may reduce COVID-19 severity
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 01:29 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - Replies (1)

Quercetin Phytosome supplementation, in combination with standard care, may improve the early symptoms of COVID-19 and help mitigate the infection’s severity. It also statistically shortens the timing of molecular test conversion from positive to negative. These are the results of two recently issued human studies1 based on data produced in the last 15 months for Indena’s Quercefit.

The company stresses it’s critical to follow local and international guidelines, and that individuals should contact a health professional if they experience any symptoms associated with COVID-19. It also advocates, however, that some botanical ingredients, including quercetin, can help modulate immune and inflammatory responses in those suffering from respiratory conditions.

“Starting from the mentioned evidences, we carried out a first prospective, randomised, controlled, and open-label study, in which in addition to standard care a daily dose of 1000 mg of quercetin Phytosome was investigated for 30 days in 152 COVID-19 outpatients to disclose its adjuvant effect in treating the early symptoms and in preventing the severe outcomes of the disease,” said Prof Ikram Ujjan, MBBS, Pro Vice Chancellor, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS). “According to the results of this clinical research, the add-on therapy with quercetin Phytosome has significantly reduced the need (68.2%) and the length (76.8%) of hospitalisation, the need of non-invasive oxygen therapy (93.3%), the progression to intensive care units (none versus 8 subjects) and the number of deaths (none versus 3 subjects). Globally considered, using quercetin Phytosome as add-on therapy to standard care has reduced by 91.6% the days of hospitalisation”.

Azmin as DPM? He’d flounder in Parliament: Shahrir
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 12:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 12082021_-_Shahrir_Samad_Interview_-_SAD...F_-_16.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Size matters, said Umno veteran Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad, when it comes to restoring Parliament’s rightful role, while Bersatu’s Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is not the deputy one needs as a Dewan Rakyat strategist.

Shahrir, in a Facebook post today, laid out his reasons, and among them is that a deputy prime minister is typically the government whip responsible for managing strategies in the Lower House by wrangling the bloc’s frontbenchers and backbenchers.

“This is why, in picking a deputy prime minister, his role in the Dewan Rakyat must be taken into account.

“A parliamentarian like Azmin is incapable of this role because of the opposition’s anger towards him. He is seen as a ‘political criminal’ by both sides of the aisle and cannot be DPM, even if Tan Sri Muhyiddin (Yassin) was still PM.

Proposal for deputy speaker from opposition gets resounding ‘aye’
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 11:51 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Nga-kor-ming-hannah-yeoh-gobind-singh-n-...270821.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A graft watchdog has welcomed a suggestion that an opposition MP be appointed deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, saying it could herald a move towards mature politics.

Rasuah Busters founder Hussamuddin Yaacub told FMT the public would see such an appointment as a relief from months of intense political squabbling.

“It’s a baby step towards new politics, towards mature politics,” he said.

The suggestion came yesterday from outgoing deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said.

Hussamuddin said bipartisanship was crucial for the country’s political development.

He praised Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and PH leaders for reaching a consensus on reforms, saying this would smoothen cooperation in Parliament.

He called for professionalism from all MPs, who must quit the habit of shouting and name-calling during their debates.

Political analyst Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the opposition had many qualified and legally trained candidates to take on the post of deputy speaker.

He described Nga Kor Ming, Hannah Yeoh, Gobind Singh Deo and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as the obvious choices.

Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 11:47 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: There will be no deputy prime minister in the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration.

In a televised address today, Ismail unveiled a smaller Cabinet than his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin, minus a deputy prime minister.

Prior to this, speculation was rife that a Bersatu leader would be appointed Ismail’s deputy.

Perak saw 9,772 cases of mental illness, 80 suicides since pandemic began, says exco
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 11:32 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 20210421_Stress_Depression_Generic_iStock.jpg]

IPOH, Aug 27 — A total of 9,772 people suffered mental disturbances in Perak throughout the Covid-19 pandemic from January 2020 to June 2021, the State Legislative Assembly was told today.

State Women and Family Development, Welfare, Community Well-being and NGO Committee chairman Datuk Dr Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin said 5,213 mental illness cases were registered from January to December last year while 4,559 cases were registered from January to June this year.

“According to statistics released by the police, the number of suicides in Perak since the Movement Control Order was implemented from March 2020 to July 2021 is 80 people,” she said.

Depression was cited as the top contributing factor for suicides, based on data from 33 cases, she said.

However, Dr Wan Norashikin said that in 24 cases, the reasons for suicide were unknown.

Other contributing reasons that could be pinned down were financial problems (13), illness (four), drugs (three) and mental problems (also three).

“If broken down by ethnic composition, the Chinese have the highest suicide cases at 32; followed by Indians at 29 cases; others, 11 cases; and Malays eight cases,” she said.

She added that suicides were more prevalent among men (66) than women (14).

Dr Wan Norashikin was responding to Changkat Jong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamauddin who asked for the statistics on mental disturbances and suicide cases since the Covid-19 outbreak started in Malaysia.

Capitol Police officers sue Trump, allies over insurrection
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 11:10 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police officers who were attacked and beaten during the Capitol riot filed a lawsuit Thursday against former President Donald Trump, his allies and members of far-right extremist groups, accusing them of intentionally sending a violent mob on Jan. 6 to disrupt the congressional certification of the election.

The suit in federal court in Washington alleges Trump “worked with white supremacists, violent extremist groups, and campaign supporters to violate the Ku Klux Klan Act, and commit acts of domestic terrorism in an unlawful effort to stay in power.”

The suit was filed on behalf of the seven officers by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. It names the former president, the Trump campaign, Trump ally Roger Stone and members of the extremist groups the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers who were present at the Capitol and in Washington on Jan. 6.

Kabul airport attack: What do we know?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 10:27 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Two powerful bomb blasts have struck the perimeter of Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport, as civilians continued to seek to escape on flights from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

At least 60 people have been killed and 140 others wounded, a senior health official in Kabul told the BBC.

The Pentagon confirmed US service personnel were among those killed - 11 US Marines and a Navy medic.

The bombings came hours after Western governments had warned their citizens to stay away from the airport, because of an imminent threat of an attack by IS-K, the Afghanistan branch of the Islamic State group.

Here is what we know about what happened.
