Muhyiddin clearly didn’t listen to his health adviser, says Dzulkefly
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 11:45 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: muhyiddin-yassin-jemilah-mahmood-bernama-260821-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Dr Jemilah Mahmood’s statement calling Malaysia’s lack of mass testing as the weakest link in its pandemic management strategy is proof that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin didn’t listen to her when she was his adviser, says a former health minister.

Dzulkefly Ahmad took to Twitter to respond to Jemilah’s statement made during her interview with a local health publication.

“It is one thing if our recommendations from the Selangor Task Force for Covid-19 were not heard, but Tan Sri Dr Jemilah’s revelation is evidence that PM-8 (Muhyiddin) did not listen to his adviser.”

However, Jemilah responded by saying matters on FTTIS (find, test, trace, isolate and support) should not be politicised.

“FTTIS is already in the process of being improved. Not all countries, including ones in the west, have a good system in place and I am confident (ours) will be strengthened further,” she said, expressing hope that everyone could work together against Covid-19.

Teenager creates an app with a difference
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 11:39 AM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Tong Jing Yen is not your average 17-year-old.

While many others his age would be more occupied with playing sports, immersing themselves in video games or scrolling through social media feeds, the Form 6 student at SMJK Katholik (Catholic High School) here has been busy creating mobile applications.

He developed his knack for creating apps after he picked up programming at the age of 12.

Although he has created three apps, the teenager’s latest one may be his most useful yet.

He spent two months coming up with Bersamamu, a free app launched earlier this month, which allows Malaysians to give and receive donations such as food, clothes and books.

The app also allows users to conveniently filter searches by location and category to find items listed for donation or that which is requested by the community.

Speaking to FMT, Tong said the idea for the app came to him in June after reading numerous reports about the hardships that many Malaysians are facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Some of them had bad luck and lost their jobs because of the MCO (movement control order). I remember one story about a viral video of a man looking for food in a garbage bin,” he said.

Are you happy with your leader?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 10:18 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

If you could be the prime minister for one day, what single thing would you do to improve the governance of Malaysia?

Some young Malaysians may not be aware of the different political and social landscape older generations once enjoyed. Many only know that their lives are ruled by race, religion and rasuah. Previous prime ministers have lurched from one disaster to another, like the 1MDB scandal.

What is your idea of a good leader?

This may be a very simple question, but the answer needs serious thought.

Past PMs, since the early 1980s, encouraged nepotism, corruption and cronyism. Most of their friends benefited from closed tenders, as did their families. They became wealthy from government tenders, from corruption and from stealing taxpayers’ money.

So what did we get after voting for them?

Some of us may treasure our RM50 or the RM500 one-off BRIM payment. Then we became livid when we looked at photos and read about Hermes Birkin bags worth several hundreds of thousands each, the imported sports cars, the luxury watches, the palatial homes worth millions, and overseas bank accounts. What do we have? The Proton and a plastic bag for which we are charged 20 sen.

Just scrap the sports minister’s post, veteran tells govt
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 10:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN: The government should have just done away with the sports minister’s post given the lack of concrete policies and long-term targets in elevating the standard of sport and its performance on the world stage over the years.

Former Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary-general Sieh Kok Chi said it was also impossible to evaluate the successes of sports ministers over the years, as performance indicators are often shifted in their favour.

He was asked about the future of the country’s sports given that the country has seen four sports ministers since 2017 — Khairy Jamaluddin, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Reezal Merican Naina Merican and the incoming minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Sieh, a veteran sports administrator and critic, said it was tough to rate ministers when their own KPIs are often evaluated based on medal targets set by the National Sports Council (MSN), which was under the auspices of the sports ministry.

He said that based on MSN’s efforts and targets, the ministers could claim themselves to be successful. He said this made it impossible to evaluate the successes or failures of the sports ministers themselves.

Zafrul isn’t the best, but at least it isn’t Azmin, says Chin Tong
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 10:03 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Tengku Zafrul Aziz’s reappointment as finance minister may not be ideal, but at least it wasn’t Azmin Ali taking the post, says DAP’s Liew Chin Tong.

“I feel if Azmin Ali had been appointed finance minister, it could have been a catastrophe,” said the former deputy defence minister on Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin’s virtual talk show “Spill The Tea, JJ”.

Liew also said it was good that an Umno leader did not take over the finance portfolio, since the prime minister was already from the same party.

Describing the Cabinet line-up as “Muhyiddin Yassin’s Cabinet without Muhyiddin”, he hoped Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s new government would be able to overcome the current political, health and economic crises.

He said the finance ministry and the government must come up with a package or game plan to navigate the impact of the pandemic, with at least more aid for B40 and M40 households to stimulate the economy.

Umno Supreme Council backs Ismail but outlines demands
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 09:55 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Umno Supreme Council has reaffirmed its support for Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the prime minister but has made it clear that the new administration must deliver, says a source in the know.

Speaking to FMT, the source said the party has also asked Ismail to look into several issues, including expediting institutional reforms.

These reforms, he said, included the separation of powers between the attorney-general and that of the public prosecutor, as well as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and police.

The Supreme Council also wants Ismail to speed up the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into former AG Tommy Thomas and his claims in his memoir.

“It’s important because it affects the credibility of his actions in office,” said the source.

DAP man foresees ‘3 kingdoms, total war’ in GE15
Posted by: superadmin - 08-28-2021, 09:52 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: YB-SENATOR-TUAN-LIEW-CHIN-TONG-DEPUTY-MI...1019-2.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia could see a “battle of the three kingdoms” in the 15th general election (GE15), says DAP’s Liew Chin Tong.

Speaking on Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin’s online talk show ‘Spill The Tea, JJ’, he said the “three kingdoms” comprised Pakatan Harapan (PH) on one side, Umno on another, and a third force which will see Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob together with Bersatu and PAS.

With minimal changes in Ismail’s Cabinet, Liew claimed the current line-up would not be well-received by the Umno leadership as it showed party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi losing out to Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin.

This would have “big implications” for GE15, where certain Umno leaders may decide to go against Ismail’s coalition.

“This is a possibility. Ismail, Annuar Musa and Umno leaders who are part of the government are prepared to contest with Bersatu and PAS. But there is Zahid’s group which is not ready to compromise with Bersatu.

Uninspiring, Johari says of Ismail Sabri cabinet
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 06:39 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 06012021_-_KUL_-_Umno_Supreme_Council_jo...HMAN11.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani did not hide his disappointment following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s announcement on his cabinet picks today.

In a series of tweets, the former second finance minister singled out the lack of inclusion of opposition MPs and young blood in the line-up as the biggest drawbacks.

“I was actually hoping that the prime minister would form a bipartisan cabinet to govern during this current crisis, or at least introduce some fresh young faces to inject more energy and enthusiasm. The line-up is uninspiring.”

Ismail Sabri has named a largely familiar cabinet, with most of the ministers and deputies from Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration either retaining their positions or getting a different portfolio.

The new faces are mostly from among senior politicians.

A number of opposition lawmakers earlier criticised those who got appointed, pointing out that the omission of Umno’s Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said is the biggest shocker.

‘Recycled’ Cabinet line-up is disappointing, says Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 08-27-2021, 06:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has called the new Cabinet a “recycled line-up with ministers who had failed to perform in the last 1.5 years being reappointed”.

“It is disappointing. We had hoped for changes but it did not happen,” he said in his Facebook live.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had earlier this morning announced the new Cabinet line-up.

Anwar, the Port Dickson MP, said the reaction to the line-up had shown it is a disappointing one and that a more effective line-up is needed to battle the ongoing health and economic crises.

He added that the prime minister has given the ministers 100 days to prove their worth but “there has been no changes for the past one and a half years”.
