Opposition not likely to take up Muhyiddin’s offer, say analysts |

GEORGE TOWN: Voters are not likely to accept any form of cooperation with Muhyiddin Yassin despite the olive branch the prime minister extended to the opposition to keep him in power until the next polls, analysts say.
Merdeka Center’s Ibrahim Suffian said the opposition would also be hard-pressed to accept Muhyiddin’s offer as they would then miss an opportunity to take the helm.
He said Muhyiddin’s comment about not wanting “kleptocrats” to come into power was pandering to Dr Mahathir Mohamad and those aligned with him such as Warisan. The term is seen as a reference to Umno’s Najib Razak.
Ibrahim said this was because Mahathir and those aligned with him can then come along together and scramble enough numbers to stay in power, as there was still room to negotiate.
However, this too, would be highly unlikely as Muhyiddin is seen by those in Pakatan Harapan and those aligned to Mahathir as ones who stole the election.

King decides who has majority, not you, PM told |

PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin has been slammed for making his own assumption that no other leader commands parliamentary majority support, with the prime minister being told that the matter should be decided by the King, not him.
Umno veteran Shahrir Samad said it was the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who had the say on who commands the majority support of MPs, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
Noting that Muhyiddin essentially admitted to losing his majority support, Shahrir said Article 43 of the Constitution clearly stated that the prime minister has to either resign or advise the King to dissolve Parliament.
“It’s not a constitutional crisis, but he’s stretching the Constitution too far. It’s like he added another provision in Article 43, that he remains prime minister because no other person has the majority. That is not in the Constitution.
“The main thing is that he has lost his majority and should act according to the Constitution. Instead, he’s making conditional offers as an inducement for him to stay as prime minister since no one has the majority, which is an assumption.

PETALING JAYA: Many of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposals for a more inclusive administration are “ripped off” from Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto, says one of the document’s authors.
“It’s a great irony. This is a man who betrayed PH and the voters, disassociated himself from us and our ideals through the Sheraton Move,” said PKR’s Wong Chen.
“And just over a year later, he is taking PH’s ideas in a desperate bid to remain in power.”
PH’s manifesto for the 14th general election included setting limits for the prime minister’s term, lowering the voting age to 18 and granting the opposition leader with provisions and the status of a federal minister.
In his televised address today, Muhyiddin proposed a number of reforms should he win September’s confidence vote.

PETALING JAYA: Although Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced various “goodies” to all parties in an attempt to keep his administration in power, activists and netizens were not impressed with his “all of government” offer.
At a press conference today where he was surrounded by his key ministers, Muhyiddin said he would propose a framework for bipartisan political cooperation, offering equal annual allocations for all MPs regardless of their political affiliation.
He said this “all of government” approach would ensure political stability and a functioning administration.
Lawyer Lim Wei Jiet, however, called Muhyiddin and his Cabinet “hypocrites” adding that for the past year, they had destroyed every single democratic check and balance.

PETALING JAYA: Ong Kian Ming took to Twitter this evening to express an openness to discussing Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yasin’s proposals only to be met with an almost blanket disapproval by his followers.
During a televised address, Muhyiddin had proposed a number of reforms should he win September’s confidence vote, including term limits for prime ministers, equal allocations for MPs, anti-party hopping legislation and a bevy of others.
In response, the Bangi MP tweeted that the proposed institutional reforms could have a lasting impact on Malaysian politics if passed.
“I think that all political parties should sit down to discuss if these terms are acceptable or not, no?” he posed.
It was quickly apparent that most did not share the DAP man’s sentiments.
“Utterly disappointed with you YB,” commented @45Fortify, “might as well announce your resignation from my party.”
“They had more than a year to do the reforms if they truly wanted to do it. Yet they tried everything to keep hold to the power. You think the same bunch of people really interested with reforms?”
@A_lmTweets said something similar, threatening to pull their support for Ong.

Amanah MPs submit motion to remove Azhar as Speaker |

PETALING JAYA: All 11 Amanah MPs have submitted a motion for Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to vacate his post, says Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
In a statement today, Mohamad said Amanah also proposed that Azhar’s predecessor, Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, be reappointed to the post.
Mohamad, or Mat Sabu as he is popularly known, said the MPs’ motion was in line with Order 4(1) of the Dewan Rakyat’s Standing Orders (Procedure for election of Yang di-Pertua).
Mat Sabu said they submitted the motion due to Azhar’s action during the special parliamentary session on July 26-29, which they said went against Article 150 (3) and Article 62 of the Federal Constitution.
“His actions also go against the function of the constitutional monarchy system in the context of basic principles of parliamentary democracy and the constitutional monarchy,” he said.
Azhar and de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan faced intense calls to resign last month following revelations that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had not consented to the revocation of the emergency ordinances (EOs).
On July 26, Takiyuddin said the EOs had been revoked on July 21, leading to MPs questioning if the King had given consent for the revocation.

PETALING JAYA: If Muhyiddin Yassin thought that his offer of “bipartisan political cooperation” would cool things politically, he was wrong.
Instead, opposition MPs rushed to hit out at him, with PKR’s Fahmi Fadzil decrying the prime minister’s address as essentially “bribery on national TV”.
Speaking to FMT, the PKR communications director said Muhyiddin had practically admitted that he had lost his majority support and was not in a position “to offer anything to anyone”.
“Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution is extremely clear that once the prime minister has lost his majority, he has two options: resign, or advise the King to dissolve Parliament.
“What he’s done is not in line with the Constitution because he is in no position to decide on behalf of the King who has the majority. His brazen statement ignores the King’s authority, function and powers as vested in the Federal Constitution.

PETALING JAYA: With his government in crisis over a possible lack of support, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has made an overture to all parties to keep his administration intact during this critical juncture.
At a press conference today where he was surrounded by his key ministers, Muhyiddin said he would propose a framework for bipartisan political cooperation, including equal annual allocations for all MPs regardless of their political party.
“All MPs will get the same annual allocations regardless of their political party. For the opposition, the amount will be prorated for the remaining months.”
He pointed out as an example the RM300,000 allocation for all MPs and senators recently to provide food baskets for the needy in their constituencies.
Currently, government MPs get an annual allocation of RM3.5 million for their constituencies and another RM300,000 for office expenses while opposition MPs only get RM100,000 for their constituencies and nothing for office expenses.

I can’t let kleptocrats get back into power, says PM |

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says he bears the responsibility of not allowing the group of “kleptocrats” to get back into power.
In a national address today, Muhyiddin explained the reasons behind his attempt to reach bipartisan agreement for the opposition to back him in a motion of confidence in Parliament.
“The reason I have made this proposal is that it will allow the government to continue to function during the pandemic.
“At the same time, just like all of you, I have the responsibility of not allowing the kleptocrat group to govern if this political turmoil is not resolved immediately,” he said.
This was a thinly veiled dig at Umno MPs like Najib Razak, with the term “kleptocrat” often used by the opposition against the former prime minister back in the 2018 polls.
Muhyiddin’s remarks also come just two weeks after claiming that he had been under pressure from “certain parties” to intervene in the court matters of several individuals facing criminal charges.
