Shahrir on Umno, the shambolic PN, and what must happen after
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 09:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – For decades a formidable presence in Malaysian politics even when in the margins, Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad has been variously described as “imaginative”, “stubborn” and “outspoken”.

He held the Federal Territories and social welfare portfolios in the first Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad administration, and the domestic trade and consumer affairs portfolio in the Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi administration.

And now, he has been lacerating in his criticism of the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-Perikatan Nasional administration.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Vibes, Shahrir details his criticism, speaks of Umno’s “search” for itself in the past three years, and the institutional reforms the nation desperately needs which, he asserts, can emanate from Umno.

NSC Act repugnant to constitution, says minority judgment in Anwar’s case
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 09:17 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: palace_of_justice_wikipedia_pic_05022021.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The National Security Council Act 2017 (NSCA) violates fundamental liberties and the federal constitution, said the minority judges who presided over opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s challenge against the constitutionality of the legislation.

Before coming to such a conclusion, Federal Court judges Datuk Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal and Datuk Vernon Ong first determined if NSCA is indeed a security law.

They pointed towards Section 18 of the Act – which allows the Agong to declare a particular place as a security area – which they find strikingly similar to the emergency proclamation provision under Article 150(1) of the federal constitution.

They are also concerned about the “special powers” of the National Security Council within security areas that allows controlling movement, taking possession of property, as well as wide powers of arrest, search and seizure.

“In the light of the foregoing, it is clear that NSCA is a security law containing sweeping powers that restrict fundamental liberties,” read the minority judgment.

Ismail ‘meets Mahathir for support’ but gets brush-off
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 09:12 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob is reported to have had a meeting with Pejuang chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad today as he sought political support in his move to succeed Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

Pejuang deputy president Marzuki Yahya told Malaysiakini that Ismail had a short meeting with Mahathir, who is MP for Langkawi, at his home in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, this afternoon.

Marzuki said Mahathir had told Ismail that the political focus should be on dealing with the Covid-19 crisis, the economy, and solving national problems through the formation of a National Recovery Council, and not about who to choose as prime minister.

“Even if we choose a prime minister but the decision does not resolve the people’s problems, there is no use,” Marzuki was quoted as saying.

Muhyiddin is speculated to be handing in his resignation tomorrow following the withdrawal of support of 15 Umno MPs.

Malaysia needs a competent PM, not a compromise candidate
Posted by: superadmin - 08-16-2021, 09:02 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

It’s a hectic time for politicians and a nail-biting time for us, the citizens.

Leaders of political parties are busy holding meetings and taking calls as they manoeuvre and scheme to be the next prime minister or claim a stake in the next Cabinet, now that Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation appears imminent.

The prime minister is expected to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong today and then announce his resignation, according to reports, including one which quotes minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (special functions) Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof as confirming this.

Parties must decide on new unity govt, says Umno’s Johari
Posted by: superadmin - 08-15-2021, 10:38 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: FMT-template-post-normal-800x500-new-logo-2021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: With beleaguered Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin believed to be on the brink of resigning, Umno supreme council member Johari Ghani has called for political parties to lead the way in forming a new unity government.

“The reality is that no one political coalition has a simple majority of seats (in the Dewan Rakyat), and no one is in favour of calling a general election at the present time,” said Johari, a former second finance minister.

“As a result, there appears to be no obvious prime ministerial candidate,” he told FMT.

The only way forward was for political parties to form a unity government led by an MP mutually acceptable to all.

He said Umno must also be prepared for any eventuality, including being part of the opposition in the lead up to the next general elections. “Serving as a check-and-balance to the next administration will allow the party to restore lost credibility with the rakyat,” Johari said.

Umno top guns yet to green light Ismail as PM, says insider
Posted by: superadmin - 08-15-2021, 10:31 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Ismail-Sabri-Yaakob-Muhyiddin-Yassin.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Top Umno leaders have yet to give their blessing for a move by some MPs and others for party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob to take over as prime minister when Muhyiddin Yassin, according to a party insider.

He told FMT that discussions have been continuing since late afternoon today to discuss the nomination of a candidate for the post. “They are trying to garner support for Ismail to be the prime minister,” the insider said, “but it has not received the blessing of party bigwigs.”

Ismail is believed to have had a meeting with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi this evening but another Umno source told FMT that “the meeting didn’t go too well”. Instead, Zahid was said to have expressed interest in Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to replace Muhyiddin based on his experience in politics and the respect he commands from the public.

The Umno source said the party may leave the decision in the hands of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Ismail Sabri’s candidacy is also supported by Bersatu secretary general Hamzah Zainuddin, who is home minister in Muhyiddin’s government. Hamzah’s name has been suggested as deputy prime minister in a new government headed by Ismail.

After UN climate report, individuals seek to do their part
Posted by: superadmin - 08-15-2021, 09:29 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

HOBOKEN, Belgium (AP) — Young urban shepherd Lukas Janssens guides his flock among the graves in Schoonselhof, one of Belgium’s iconic cemeteries, knowing sheep are kinder to nature than lawnmowers.

Limiting emissions of carbon dioxide, a key contributor to climate change, and promoting biodiversity are two key goals of De Antwerpse Stadsherder — The Antwerp City Shepherd, Janssens’ company of one human and 270 sheep.

“We won’t stave it off with a flock of sheep,” Janssens said of global warming. “But it is another step to build an more ecological society.”

Only days after the alarming U.N. report on climate change, the message of U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres was still stuck in his head — “code red for humanity,” with global warming threatening to choke the planet.

Even if Guterres’s words were aimed primarily at governments, investment managers and asset owners, some citizens have known this day would come for decades.

Afghan conflict: Taliban enter outskirts of the capital Kabul
Posted by: superadmin - 08-15-2021, 09:05 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Taliban militants have reached the outskirts of Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, after taking control of most of the rest of the country.

The interior minister says negotiations have taken place to ensure a peaceful transition of power.

A Taliban statement says fighters had been ordered to remain on the edges of the capital.

"We assure the people in Afghanistan - there will be no revenge on anyone," a Taliban spokesman told the BBC.

Russia is planning to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

It says it will not be closing its embassy, because it has been provided with security assurances by the Taliban.

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Gerd Muller has died at the age of 75.

The striker scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany, including the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

Muller also spent 15 years at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, scoring a 566 goals in 607 appearances for the club.

"Today is a sad, black day for FC Bayern and all of its fans," Bayern president Herbert Hainer said.

"Gerd Muller was the greatest striker there has ever been - and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family.

"Without Gerd Muller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever."

'One of the greatest legends in history'

Muller won the Golden Boot for netting 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup and also won the Ballon d'Or that year.

He then helped West Germany win the European Championship two years later.

"As a player and a person, Gerd Muller stands for FC Bayern and its development into one of the biggest clubs in the world like no other. Gerd will forever be in our hearts."

Best time to seek reforms is now – Zainul Arifin
Posted by: superadmin - 08-15-2021, 08:46 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

IN an obvious last throw of the proverbial dice, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has offered a promise to reform the politics of the country, which some have described as a blatant attempt of corruption, and others suggest is too little, too late.

It is, of course, and act of desperation trying to plug leaks in Perikatan Nasional’s lifeboat, even as it is being pummelled by waves in the wake of political opportunism.

Yet, being the glass-half-full person that I am, I see the raft of promises to be the best opportunity for significant parliamentary and constitutional reforms since the birth of this nation, even if eked out of desperation.

The promises may be from a suitor wooing a scorned ex, but on the surface, it looks like an opportunity that should be grabbed. However, real politics will suggest otherwise. It is politics über alles.

The prime minister will be left twisting in the wind with his generous offers, and needs to do the honourable thing and leave, it is widely speculated.

However, as an exercise in “what-if-ism”, let us look at what our elected officials are likely to be saying no to.
