China’s coronavirus success could see HK-style subsidised medical care in mainland

China’s coronavirus success could see Hong Kong-style subsidised medical care in mainland, health expert says

[Image: 977b7fa8-fc12-11eb-aa37-9736ba6f9b4b_ima...1628847321]
  • Professor Li Ling, from Peking University, says China’s successful handling of the pandemic is a good argument for implementation of universal medical care
  • Currently, reimbursements from China’s public medical insurance programmes are relatively low and capped, meaning the public must cover most health costs
Mainland China’s success in combating the coronavirus pandemic increases the likelihood that free public health care, similar to Hong Kong, will be provided for the nation’s 1.4 billion-strong population, says a leading expert on the country’s medical care reform.

“China’s success in containing transmission of the virus last year was largely due to the up-to-the-minute free testing and treatment, the result was very good with an affordable price,” said Li Ling, a professor at the National School of Development at Peking University.

“It was similar to Hong Kong’s public health care, which is virtually free to all individuals and works very well.

“China is still a developing country with a large population, but with our national power today, it is possible to provide free medical care.”

Open field now for MPs to show they ‘have the numbers’, says lawyer
Posted by: superadmin - 08-14-2021, 10:51 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Any MP can now seek to have an audience with the King and try to prove they “have the numbers”, following Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s admission that he no longer had the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

Lawyer Salim Bashar said there is now nothing to stop any MP from going to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong claiming to have statutory declarations (SDs) from MPs backing him or her to lead the government.

He cited the Federal Court decision in the infamous Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin v Zambry Abd Kadir case over the post of Perak menteri besar in 2009.

“The Perak case has given precedent that the test of confidence may be established and gathered from extraneous sources if they are reliable and established, other than voting from the floor.

“This decision seems to provide now an avenue for MPs to show or withdraw support based on individual declarations. It also answers pivotal questions as to whether the prime minister can lose support outside of Parliament,” he said.

Umno No. 2 urges govt to ‘take the right constitutional move’

Umno No. 2 urges govt to ‘take the right constitutional move’ after PM Muhyiddin’s proposals

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 ― Every executive decision made by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government at present poses financial risks to the country and could be challenged in court, according to Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Negri Sembilan state lawmaker urged the government not to prolong the political turmoil but to make the “right constitutional move”, in response to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s offer of bipartisan cooperation yesterday.

“To prevent the country from being mired in political turmoil and constitutional crisis, it is appropriate for the Executive to step forward and take the right constitutional move,” Mohamad, who is Rantau assemblyman, said in a series of tweets late last night.

The politician, whose party officially withdrew support for the ruling PN last month, insisted that the PM has lost his majority, even though a vote of confidence has yet to take place in Parliament.

Muhyiddin had last week promised that he would table a confidence vote next month, when the Dewan Rakyat convenes. Currently, the vote is scheduled for September 7.

However, Mohamad said that with Muhyiddin’s legitimacy to govern under dispute, the prime minister should take measures in accordance with the Federal Constitution.

“There is nothing more crucial to a prime minister than to fulfill his responsibilities in accordance with the limits and mandate provided by the Constitution.

Tycoon slams BNM governor’s indifference on loan moratoriums
Posted by: superadmin - 08-14-2021, 10:39 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: Ameer-Ali-Mydin-Nor-Shamsiah-Mohd-Yunus-...0821-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus should “go down to the ground” and understand the dire situation faced by businesses when commenting on the loan moratorium issue, says a prominent tycoon.

“It is morally wrong that banks are profiteering from the difficulties of their borrowers to the tune of billions,” Business Survival Group adviser Ameer Ali Mydin told FMT.

“BNM should not just be looking after banks and making sure they are healthy. They should keep an eye out for the whole country as well.”

Ameer was commenting on Nor Shamsiah’s remarks yesterday that a full waiver on interest during the loan moratorium will result in “serious negative consequences” for banks and more difficulties for the people.

Kissing frogs to find upstanding politicians
Posted by: superadmin - 08-14-2021, 10:22 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

On Aug 10, a frog belonging to one Seth Burlingham won first prize at the 2021 annual Ashtabula county fair frog jumping competition. People cheered as the frog leaped 11 feet 5 inches (3.47m) to clinch the top spot in Ashtabula, Ohio, in the United States.

Earlier, in May, a frog named Firefly was reported to have jumped 20 feet 1 inch (6.12m) to win the Calaveras county fair frog jumping competition. The jump was short of the US national record of 21 feet 5.75 inches (6.54m) set in 1986 by a frog named Rosie the Ribiter.

Quite a number of counties in the US have these frog jumping contests as part of a fun and gaiety programme to bring the local community together, with May 13 named National Frog Jumping Day.

If there ever were to be a national frog jumping day in Malaysia, it would have to be just after a general election or a state election. For that is the time politicians show off their jumping skills – hopping from the party which gave them a ticket to contest in the election to the party in power.

Here’s how to manage the chaos at PPVs, says ex-health minister
Posted by: superadmin - 08-14-2021, 09:33 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: PPV-Persada-Johor-Crowd-Screesnhot-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: With the overcrowding and ensuing chaos at various vaccination centres (PPVs) across the country over the past week, a former health minister has put forward a few suggestions which he believes could help solve the problem.

Amanah’s Dzulkefly Ahmad said there are ways to “manage the chaos” that has been criticised by the public as well as various quarters.

Speaking to FMT, the Selangor Task Force Covid-19 chairman said his first suggestion would be for a website to allow for bookings by people who wish to be vaccinated at a specific PPV.

“With the website, anyone can book their vaccination date at the PPV using their passport or IC number. This would be subject to a maximum of 300 people per day.

Pakatan says no to bipartisan cooperation with Perikatan
Posted by: superadmin - 08-14-2021, 09:27 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) has rejected Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s offer to work together in a bipartisan manner.

Instead, the Opposition coalition, in a statement, countered by promising to offer a “better plan” to those who are suffering as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“PH has taken a stand to reject all of Muhyiddin’s insincere offers which should have been done earlier and not at the end of his political career journey.

“The focus should be on saving the people and not his political career.

MP SPEAKS | Is Muhyiddin offering olive branch or poisoned chalice?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-14-2021, 09:22 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Tony Pua

MP SPEAKS | Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government put forth a litany of offers, which surprised many. What wasn’t surprising was the overwhelmingly negative response to the offer, whether by my fellow colleagues or the Twittersphere.

What I’m about to write will make many unhappy of course. But for those who would like to ponder rationally my considered opinion (my and mine only), do read on.

Make no mistake. I have no love lost for Perikatan Nasional (PN) or Muhyiddin. I’ve stated in my earlier Facebook post the fate of PN today is retribution for the Sheraton Move betrayal of the rakyat.

At a personal level, I will rejoice if Muhyiddin resigns. But as a responsible elected representative, I must ask the question, “what next?” That’s a reasonable question, right?

Why the US is "No 1" in eight aspects of COVID-19 response?
Posted by: superadmin - 08-13-2021, 10:10 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

A research report exposing the truth about America's fight against COVID-19 was made public on Monday by three think tanks in Beijing.

According to the report titled "'America Ranked First'?! The Truth about America's Fight against COVID-19," the United States is well deserved to be the world's No. 1 anti-pandemic failure, the world's No. 1 political-blaming country, the world's No. 1 pandemic spreader, the world's No. 1 politically-divisive country, the world's No. 1 currency-abusing country, the world's No. 1 turbulent country during the pandemic, the world's No. 1 disinforming country, and the world's No. 1 country advocating origin tracing terrorism.

The report was jointly released by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of the Renmin University of China, the Taihe Institute and the Intellisia Institute.

The following are some key points from the report.

FOR PARTISAN COMPETITIONS, NOT FOR THE LIVES

As of Aug. 7, 2021, the United States had reported 35,530,951 cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 613,658 deaths. In terms of both numbers, the United States ranks first in the world.

Behind the cold numbers lies the domestic politics of the United States -- particularly the highly politicized partisanship, which has claimed the lives of many Americans "who need not have died."

"It's a slaughter," said William Foege, an American epidemiologist.

Four opposition parties say no to PM’s offer
Posted by: superadmin - 08-13-2021, 09:53 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Warisan-MUDA-Upko-and-Parti-Sarawak-Bersatu-1.jpg]

KOTA KINABALU: Four opposition parties have issued a joint statement rejecting the offer of a bipartisan political cooperation by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin earlier today.

Warisan, MUDA, Upko and Parti Sarawak Bersatu said they “strongly” reject Muhyiddin’s overtures, saying the opposition parties had from last year proposed the Confidence and Supply Agreement in order to stabilise the government.

“Despite Muhyiddin becoming the prime minister and forming a government through the back door, we were prepared to compromise for the benefit and welfare of the people.

“But he was vain and rejected all that the opposition offered,” they said.
