- Foreign Minister Wang Yi tells delegation there is no room for links with terror group it blames for Xinjiang attacks
- Taliban spokesman says meeting in Tianjin covered political, economic and security issues as well as peace process
China has pledged support for the Taliban’s role in Afghanistan’s reconstruction, while demanding that it cuts ties with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement – blamed by Beijing for attacks in its Xinjiang region.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during talks with a nine-member delegation led by the Taliban’s chief negotiator and co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in the northern city of Tianjin on Wednesday.
It was the first time a senior member of the organisation had visited China since the Taliban’s capture of several key districts in Badakhshan and Kandahar provinces. Taliban fighters have taken control of around half the country up to its border with the Chinese region of Xinjiang , and US air strikes continue to support Afghan security forces.

From Christopher Leong
Many Malaysians, myself included, read the news of the Dewan Rakyat proceedings held on July 26 with some bemusement, concern and consternation at the legal sleight of hand and artful antics displayed within the august House.
It has been reported that the federal government – via the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) – had announced in the Dewan Rakyat that the government had decided, based on Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution, to revoke the six emergency ordinances that had been promulgated during the operation of the relevant Proclamation of Emergency.
The minister was reported to have gone on to say that the issue of annulment is therefore no longer relevant.

Ex-Olympians slam sexualisation of female athletes |

PETALING JAYA: Former Olympians have lashed out at the persistent sexualisation of female athletes (over the years), which have intensified now by social media platforms that more freely allow derogatory comments to disseminate.
Just a few days ago, a local news outlet chose to pixelate the body of Rio 2016 silver medallist Cheong Jun Hoong when including her picture in a story.
This was followed by negative comments about gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s attire which were shared in response to stories about her Olympic performances.
“Female athletes have long faced sexism, negative comments and gender inequality in sport,” former national swimmer Nurul Huda Abdullah told FMT.
Nurul, who competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, said this treatment was part of the reason she retired early from professional sport at the age of 18.

Bangi MP calls for political moratorium so MPs can focus on guiding Malaysia out of Covid-19 woods
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming in Parliament today proposed that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle take on a Covid-19 Moratorium Agreement (CMA) to set aside political differences and focus collectively on a direction out of the pandemic.
The DAP man said cross-party cooperation towards a mutual goal is the way forward, saying this was evident in his constituency where the cooperation between the federal and state government, paired with a proactive District Officer, saw 11 new vaccination centres (PPVs) being opened.
Ong further justified his suggestion by saying every lawmaker would surely have ideas and suggestions on combating the pandemic, and such ideas, regardless of their feasibility, would not be explored if no mutual agreement is made.
“My suggestion is why not have a Covid-19 moratorium agreement, where we can all band together to work together as frontliners to control Covid-19 and to heal the economy.

Plenty of talent and ability has been on show in Malaysia over the past days as able voices from all segments of the community have stood against incompetence.
There has been eloquence from politicians, logic from lawyers, good science from deeply frustrated doctors and an upsurge of demand for plain common sense from business and the community at large. Yet the actual decisions are still being made by dithering dunderheads who lack the legitimacy required to rule.
As their so-called State of Emergency has descended into chaos this Marx Brothers administration first declared there would be no reopening of the Parliament. Then (because forced by the increasingly anxious rulers) they agreed to a ‘Parliament’ but without votes or debates or questions or anything else that parliaments do – and just for five days.
After all, there was a ‘State of Emergency’ in place.
Except, now it turns out there isn’t a State of Emergency any more. Following UMNO’s midnight ultimatum it has just evaporated. Excuses are that it was dropped before the ultimatum (on Wednesday as a matter of fact) but the ‘Non-Emergency situation’ won’t come into force until tomorrow, apparently.
Lawyers are banging their heads and demanding evidence of due process. But what to ask a bunch of idiots who simply ignore rules, lack legitimacy, block questions and create nonsense arguments out of thin air as they refuse to be made accountable for anything they do?
It is plain for all to see these opportunists will keep on saying black is white until someone kicks them out of office, because there is one compelling reason that keeps them clinging on, which they all understand from a life-time of experience. Good old-fashioned Malaysian ‘Money Politics’.

Containing Covid-19's impact on the Klang Valley's healthcare system |

COMMENT | It has been just over two weeks since we have formed the Greater Klang Valley Special Task Force (GKV STF) to deal with the huge Covid-19 outbreak in the region. The GKV STF has a good team from the Health Ministry (MOH), the Army and experts from outside the MOH.
We have been working continually to put into place measures to contain the impact of the outbreak - saving lives is our priority.
The rising numbers of infections and deaths indicates the dire situation, one that is very evident to the public. Covid-19 infections are very widespread in the community and our hospital capacity in the Greater Klang Valley, including intensive care unit (ICU), is stretched to the maximum.
Why are numbers still rising in the Greater Klang Valley despite the vaccination ramp-up?
Many are asking this question. It is important to appreciate that the size of the outbreak is far larger than the numbers detected each day. Many asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic individuals, who are not aware of their infection, are spreading the virus. Remember that the vaccine effectiveness is best two weeks after the second dose, so this takes time. An important contribution is the Delta variant that has a high infectivity rate. In addition, we recognise, from the experience and data of nations with high vaccination rates, that infections can still occur due to the Delta variant although the hospitalisation and severe infections are significantly reduced.

U.S. anti-China campaign detrimental to global COVID-19 cooperation |

U.S. anti-China campaign detrimental to global COVID-19 cooperation, says Armenian scholar
YEREVAN, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. disinformation campaign against China, which uses COVID-19 out of geopolitical interests, has hampered global joint efforts against the pandemic and threatened to shatter millions of lives, a leading Armenian political scientist has said.
The United States launched such a campaign to divert attention away from its evident failures in tackling the pandemic domestically, Benyamin Poghosyan, head of the Center for Political and Economic Strategic Studies in Armenia, wrote in an opinion piece published Saturday on the Voice of Armenia newspaper.
Poghosyan said both former U.S. President Donald Trump and his successor, incumbent President Joe Biden, have used the novel coronavirus to stir up anti-Chinese sentiments around the world, either by openly referring COVID-19 as "the Wuhan virus" or by promoting a "Wuhan lab-leak" conspiracy theory.
The United States, who is deeply concerned by China's rise and wishes to curb the country's development by all means possible, has been trying to mobilize its allies in the smear campaign, Poghosyan said.
These efforts, though futile, have posed a considerable threat to the world, as they undermine international cooperation in the fight against the deadly pandemic, he noted.
In fact, U.S. policies towards China are dividing the world and "directly contradict the ideas of justice and human rights promoted by the United States itself," he said.
As vaccination programs are in full swing in some wealthier countries, the developing world is struggling to reduce COVID-19 deaths. It is at times like these that great powers must unite and support those in need, Poghosyan stressed.
Noting that many countries have refused to participate in the anti-Chinese propaganda, he called on countries to be careful not to cater to U.S. geopolitical whims, rather to act in their own national interests.
"To combat the pandemic and prevent millions of new victims in developing countries, it is necessary for the U.S. government to put an end to the propaganda war against China, abandon its strategy of using the pandemic for narrow geopolitical interests, and united with all countries," said Poghosyan.

We can tolerate gaffes but not 8,000 deaths, Adham told |

KUALA LUMPUR: The health minister’s mistakes such as his “warm water” and “Spanish fly” fiascos can be forgiven, but not the loss of 8,000 lives to Covid-19 due to poor policies, says a Perak MP.
Nga Kor Ming (PH-Teluk Intan) said Dr Adham Baba’s speech in the Dewan Rakyat today lacked proposals to overcome the pandemic.
He also said there had not been any attempts to analyse why the government failed.
“If you’re not fit for the job, nothing personal, please give the chance for others to prove that (they can do it) – to save Malaysians,” he said today.
Nga also claimed that nine vaccination centres (PPVs) in Perak had been forced to close due to inadequate vaccine supply.
