Mechanical and electrical sector at breaking point due to prolonged lockdown, says association

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — The mechanical and electrical (M&E) sector is now at the ”breaking point”, as the manufacturing-related, supply chain and maintenance segments have not been allowed to operate, said the Malaysia Council of Mechanical and Electrical Association (MCMEA).

Chairman Michelle Hah said although some of the association’s members belong to the critical support and essential services group, they have not been able to obtain approvals to operate since June 1.

She said these members supply essential industrial electrical replacement peripherals and equipment that are critical to the continuity of electrical supply to all industries, factories, sewerage and water treatment plants and essential buildings such as hospitals and others.

While M&E services members (consisting of contractors, services engineers, integrators, maintenance personnel and competent personnel) are required to attend to critical safety and crucial maintenance work, many were rejected by the Covid-19 Intelligent Management System (CIMS) 3.0.

'It was hard to breathe': China flood terror as train carriage submerged
Posted by: superadmin - 07-22-2021, 10:10 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

As floodwater crashed through a busy subway station in China on Tuesday, desperate passengers tried to flee while others were swept helplessly off platforms.

In one train carriage, water seeped in and rose from ankle, to waist, to neck-height. Panicked commuters stretched upwards to breathe, while others lifted shorter people into the shrinking air pocket above.

In terrifying videos shared on social media, some passengers can be seen standing on chairs and clinging to the ceiling as the floodwater creeps upwards. One tried to smash a window, before realising that there was even more water outside the carriage.

Some filmed the unfolding tragedy, while others called loved ones or posted pleas for help. "I can't speak anymore," one woman wrote on the social media site Weibo. "If no rescue comes in 20 minutes, hundreds of us will lose our lives."

"We were all standing on the seats, and the water was already on our knees," a woman who gave her name as Ms Li told Elephant News.

"Some shorter passengers had water up to their necks," she said, adding that as time went on the air supply began to diminish.

After about an hour, the train carriage was plunged into darkness and the oxygen level waned further. "I was really scared, but the most terrifying thing was not the water, but the diminishing air supply," one person told Reuters news agency.

After several hours of fear and uncertainty, rescuers were able to gain access through the roof of the carriage and pulled people out. "We knocked on the glass a bit [on the ceiling]. Then suddenly there was air," an unnamed woman told state broadcaster CCTV.

Stop dreaming, Umno’s doors closed to Bersatu, Shahidan told
Posted by: superadmin - 07-22-2021, 09:38 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: mohd-puad-zarkashi-bernama-221118-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member has ripped into Arau MP Shahidan Kassim for proposing that the party keep a door open to working with Bersatu.

“Umno’s doors to Bersatu are closed,” said Puad Zarkashi. “A decision was made at the AGM in March and the July 7 Supreme Council meeting.

“So Shahidan does not need to dream. Umno can work with other parties, including PAS and those in Sabah and Sarawak.”

Shahidan, an Umno member, said yesterday that the party should work with Bersatu and PAS if it was looking for a comfortable win in the next general election.

He questioned if Umno would work with PKR and DAP if it did not tie up with Bersatu and PAS.

Want shared prosperity? Ditch race-based policies, says economist
Posted by: superadmin - 07-22-2021, 09:03 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: If the government really intends to achieve its Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 plan, it must start by doing away with race-based policies, says an economist and former civil servant.

Ramon Navaratnam, a former Treasury deputy secretary-general, said protective policies based on the New Economic Policy (NEP) would lead to “a lot” of brain drain, adding that many had already left Malaysia seeking better opportunities.

He told FMT that these local talents did not feel incentivised to work and deliver here, which pointed to a structural weakness.

“Treat all people fairly, that’s what Covid-19 has taught us. Help the poor regardless of race. But when you find your neighbour who’s half as qualified as you getting preference in employment, where is the incentive to compete?

“Where is the incentive to raise productivity and production and therefore economic growth and the capacity to distribute wealth?” he asked.

Syed Saddiq says repeatedly threatened with criminal charges, insists would rather go court tomorrow than join Perikatan

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Opposition MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman tonight declared that he would choose to go to court instead of joining the ruling coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN).

His team had tonight notified the media that he has been summoned to be present at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow morning following an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

In a brief message about his court appearance tomorrow, Syed Saddiq on Twitter wrote that the truth will always prevail.

“Berani kerana benar. It is in moments like this that I am reminded why I joined Politics. Truth will always prevail.

“Saya lebih rela masuk mahkamah dari masuk Perikatan Nasional. Bring it on!” he said in the tweet, with the sentence in Malay roughly meaning that he would rather go to court than join Perikatan Nasional.

Indonesia is now the epicenter of Asia's Covid-19 crisis
Posted by: superadmin - 07-21-2021, 10:13 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Indonesia is now the epicenter of Asia's Covid-19 crisis. Here's what you need to know

(CNN)For much of last year, it seemed like Indonesia had managed to keep its Covid-19 outbreak largely under control.

Now, the island nation -- home to about 270 million people -- has become Asia's new epicenter of the pandemic, reporting more daily cases and deaths than hard-hit India as a devastating second wave rips through the archipelago.

With tens of thousands of infections being recorded daily, experts say the country's health care system could be pushed to the brink of disaster if the spread of the virus continues unabated.

Here's what you need to know about the crisis in Indonesia.
How did Covid-19 cases and deaths surge in Indonesia?

Infections started rising toward the end of May, following the Eid Al-Fitr holidays to mark the end of the Islamic fasting month -- and soon grew exponentially.

According to health experts, the crisis is being fueled by the spread of the more infectious [url=https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/10/health/delta-variant-india-explained-coronavirus-intl-cmd/index.html]Delta variant
, first identified in India.

"Every day we are seeing this Delta variant driving Indonesia closer to the edge of a Covid-19 catastrophe," Jan Gelfand, head of the Indonesian delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said in late June.

Experts have blamed the government for its slow response in not implementing strict lockdowns last year after cases were first reported in the country, and its alleged failure to invest in efficient testing and tracing systems.

Days of torrential rain and massive flooding have hit China’s Henan province, bursting the banks of rivers, overwhelming dams and the public transport system and forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

At least 12 people have been killed in the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, and another four in the nearby city of Gongyi as 14 reservoirs overflowed, sparking flooding and landslides, state media said. The provincial authorities issued its highest level of weather warning. A year’s worth of rain – 640mm – fell in just three days. The city’s weather bureau said more than 552mm of rain had fallen between 7pm Monday and 7pm Tuesday, including 202mm between 4 and 5pm on Tuesday.

Allow debates and more MPs or resign, Speaker told
Posted by: superadmin - 07-21-2021, 06:30 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan has called on Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to allow more MPs to attend the upcoming special Parliament sitting and for debates to be held.

The opposition coalition is also demanding for Azhar to state if he was going to adhere to the call by the King and Malay Rulers to reconvene Parliament to debate the emergency ordinance and the National Recovery Plan – or if he was merely going “to comply with the Cabinet’s directive”.

“If he cannot do this, it is best that he resigns,” the PH presidential council said in a statement.

The statement was issued by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

On Sunday, Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon said Parliament was looking at limiting the July 26 sitting to 80 MPs.

The golden age of Umno is on the wane
Posted by: superadmin - 07-21-2021, 04:41 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Murray Hunter

Umno is once again deeply split. There is a fracture between the party grassroots, the Supreme Council and the parliamentary caucus. In addition, both the Supreme Council and parliamentary members have divisions and are split on the best way for the party to go in the future.

To complicate things even more, some states are controlled by warlords, who are acting quasi-independently, and engaged with their own rifts and divisions at state-level. Umno from the outside looks like a party about to break apart.

Umno became an institutional icon that was formed in 1946 to fight against the formation of the Malayan Union, on the side of the raja-raja, or royal families, in the interests of defending the feudal Malay structure. Umno later went on to negotiate independence from the British, where the sultans kept their powers.
