Mahathir video plays deja vu with Malay dilemma |

A recent video clip of Dr Mahathir Mohamad speaking after his party Pejuang was registered has caused much consternation. He said he was thankful that Pejuang was finally registered, but he went on to say:
“Our party is a Malay party. Unlike others, we openly admit that we are a Malay and Bumiputera party. We formed a Malay party because the country is originally a Malay nation.
“We shared the nation with others, but this sharing should not be until we (Malays) are the poorest, in the lowest strata and insulted in our own country. Today, we can see Malays split until we have lost power.
“Why? Because of greed. Each and everyone wants position and power, not to serve the race, religion and country but want lucrative returns. Malays form parties not to serve the nation but to seek high positions. There are those who want to be prime ministers, ministers and deputy ministers. That is their objective.”
I am not sure how convincing he was to the Malay crowd with this blatant appeal on racial grounds.
It is not true that the Malays have lost power. They never did.
Mahathir’s statement caused much hurt and anger among those who view him as being somewhat responsible for the current state of the country. It is indeed difficult to know what he wanted to convey or why he chose to make this statement at a time when the people are hurting from the impact of Covid-19 and struggling to keep afloat. It sounded a wee bit desperate to me.

From Murugesan Sinnandavar
Throughout history countries have risen and fallen with their leaders. In good times, a good leader will take his country to greater heights while at its most challenging hour, he will lead it towards safety and hope.
A good leader need not be the smartest nor the most confident, although these qualities do help. However, a good leader must be honest, see the facts for what they are and make firm decisions.
Abraham Lincoln wasn’t the smartest among his cabinet and yet led his nation out of a civil war and freed the oppressed half. Winston Churchill wasn’t the favourite choice and yet roused his country to victory during World War 2.
These leaders felt the pulse of the nation and did what needed to be done to save their people. They listened to those that were actually doing the job on the ground and made hard choices based on facts.

KUALA LUMPUR: An in-depth investigation is still being conducted with Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS) to determine the root cause of the anomaly detected on the Measat-3 satellite.
In a statement today, Measat Global Berhad said it had maintained continuous telemetry and command control of the satellite since the anomaly was reported on June 21.
It said the Combined Space Operations Centre (CSpOC) via Space-Track was also helping to track the Measat-3 satellite and all its transponders have been deactivated to prevent interference with other satellites.
“CSpOC will help in tracking the Measat-3 satellite and notify other operators of the satellite’s orbital location, while the full investigation is being conducted by Measat and BSS,” it said.
Measat added that almost all customer services on Measat-3 have been restored onto backup satellite capacity on other co-located Measat satellites and third-party satellites serving the region.

PETALING JAYA: A group of youths gathered at Dataran Merdeka today to protest against the Perikatan National (PN) government’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Around 40 people were seen waving 14 black flags and carrying a banner with the hashtag #KeluarDanLawan (Come out and fight), while standing in front of several fake “bodies”.
A representative of Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat, the organiser of the event, said the protest went on for 40 minutes.
Police arrived as the protesters were in the middle of reading out their statement.
In the statement, the group said the “bodies” symbolised the increasing number of Covid-19 deaths and suicide cases.
It added that the black flags were raised as a sign of the people’s anger in every state, following the popular use of hashtags such as #Lawan and #KerajaanGagal on social media.
“This shows that the people are tired and angry at the egotistical attitude of the PN government, which refuses to resign,” it said.

Closing low-risk outlets makes no sense, says ex-deputy minister |

PETALING JAYA: Former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye has proposed three ways to balance lives and livelihood as the Covid-19 situation worsens.
He said it did not make sense to force non-essential businesses to close despite being in the low-risk category.
He said risk-based assessment would be more effective to kick-start the stuttering economy while ensuring the numbers are low.
“It should be risk-based and not according to the industries.
“It doesn’t make sense to punish those who are following SOPs and allow those violating them to continue operating,” he told FMT.

Afghans flee to eastern Turkey as Taliban takes control amid chaos |

Twenty-eight days into their journey out of Afghanistan, a woman and her five children are sitting in the shade near a bus station in Tatvan, a town on the shore of Lake Van in eastern Turkey.
She is waiting for a smuggler, who was paid in advance, to take the family to Istanbul. Tired and dirty, the younger children are playing in the dust and laughing; the youngest boy wants a piggyback. The smuggler is two days late.
“My husband died fighting the Taliban in Ghazni,” she said. “There are fierce battles there now. We used the mountain road [to Iran] and got stopped by Turkish soldiers at the border, but they let us go. We have walked for days … My children are getting sick. It’s a very difficult situation.”
Chaos has quickly engulfed Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US and Nato troops after 20 years fighting against the jihadist movement; the Taliban claim to be in control of 85% of the country, kindling fears of renewed civil war.

Covid cases are rising in all 50 US states as the Delta variant spreads coast to coast, news outlets reported on Friday , and with less than half the US population fully vaccinated, public health chiefs warned of an “extraordinary surge”.
Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said at a White House briefing: “This is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”
Walensky said the US was seeing an average of 26,000 new coronavirus cases a day – a seven-day average that is 70% higher than last week. Hospitalizations and deaths are also seeing increases – about 36% and 26%, respectively, with Walensky noting this was another “critical moment” in the outbreak.
“We are seeing outbreaks of cases in parts of the country that have low vaccination coverage because unvaccinated people are at risk. Communities that are fully vaccinated are generally faring well,” she said.

AP: Few AZ voter fraud cases, discrediting Trump’s claims |

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona county election officials have identified fewer than 200 cases of potential voter fraud out of more than 3 million ballots cast in last year’s presidential election, further discrediting former President Donald Trump’s claims of a stolen election as his allies continue a disputed ballot review in the state’s most populous county.
An Associated Press investigation found 182 cases where problems were clear enough that officials referred them to investigators for further review. So far, only four cases have led to charges, including those identified in a separate state investigation. No one has been convicted. No person’s vote was counted twice.
While it’s possible more cases could emerge, the numbers illustrate the implausibility of Trump’s claims that fraud and irregularities in Arizona cost him the state’s electorate votes. In final, certified and audited results, Biden won 10,400 more votes than Trump out of 3.4 million cast.
