Fort Detrick and COVID-19 - Chinese want an investigation! |

Zhao Lijian: As of 3 p.m. this afternoon, over 750,000 Chinese netizens have signed the letter, calling for a thorough probe into Fort Detrick lab to find the truth of coronavirus. The number of co-signers is soaring as we speak. I also noted that huanqiu.com conducted an online survey about where the next-stage investigation should be. Over 90 percent of the respondents believed the next-phase investigation should be carried out in the US. You may have a look at that.
These actions initiated by the pubic and media in fact have raised those questions long hovering over the mind of all, which the US has kept in dark. Here are questions for the US to answer: What is the link between Fort Detrick and the unexplained outbreaks of respiratory disease including EVALI? Why hasn't the US invited the WHO in for an investigation into Fort Detrick? Why can’t origins study be conducted in the US just as in China? The US should show transparency and tell as much as they know about all the questions and respond to the concerns of the outside world.
In recent days, 54 countries sent a letter to the WHO Director General on the issue of origin-tracing, stressing the importance of adopting science-based approach and rejecting political manipulation. Origin-tracing is a scientific matter, the second phase of which requires study in multiple places around the world by scientists. Any attempt to peddle intelligence-led origin-tracing in disregard of science and truth, and coerce experts and scholars in pursuit of one’s selfish interests will only disrupt global anti-epidemic cooperation, meet with strong opposition from the international community, and lead to nowhere.
Nothing will prevail over the will of the people. It has long been known to all that the US is trying to engage in political manipulation and shift blame to China. The US should heed the calls of the the Chinese people and the rest of the international community, and respond squarely to the open letter and the online poll.

PETALING JAYA: A general strike by junior doctors is just days away, with no response from the government so far, even as the doctors say their aim is to remain in public service.
A representative of the Hartal Doktor Kontrak group said the lack of government response left them with no choice but to carry out the strike (or hartal) on July 26 as planned.
Speaking to FMT on condition of anonymity, the representative said the aim of the hartal was to prevent the loss of contract doctors, either to the private sector or overseas.
The contract doctors launched a Black Flag protest movement on social media two weeks ago to highlight their complaints about the contract system.

To date, China's total vaccination number is approaching 1.5 billion, nearly 700 million people are fully vaccinated. Only one nurse died after a complete vaccination with local vaccines. Several days ago, China approved the emergency use of the Sinopharm vaccine in the age group from 3 to 17 officially, on July 16, 20 21. If Chinese vaccines are good for nothing, how dare the Chinese officials approve of using them in Children and adolescents? Recently, there have been intensive reports in Southeast Asia smearing Chines vaccines, especially in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, due to political manipulations. We hope viewers can share the video with as many people as possible to reveal the truth.

Ignoring meritocracy led us to the mess today, says Zaid |

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s failure to manage Covid-19 and the economy is not only an indictment of the Perikatan Nasional government, but also the country’s refusal to recognise talent over the years, says a former minister.
Zaid Ibrahim, the former de facto law minister, said Malaysia was paying the price for neglecting meritocracy through the previous decades.
“We are in an unprecedented crisis today, and what do we still see in the news? Race, religion and political patronage, things we used to see in the 1980s; it isn’t going to save us from the bigger issues we are facing now,” he told FMT.
Zaid said it was sad that the country appeared to have learned nothing from the failures of the past.
He said the current social media label of “Kerajaan Gagal” being used against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration reflected the lack of talent at the highest levels which stemmed from the continued promotion of policies and practices which encouraged mediocrity.

Don’t worry about Sinovac vaccine, say health experts |

PETALING JAYA: Those who get the Sinovac vaccine need not worry about its efficacy against new Covid-19 variants or Putrajaya’s decision to halt the usage of the China-made drug, three health experts said.
However, they said the government’s conflicting statements over Sinovac could impact the national vaccination drive.
The health experts arer Sunway University president Dr Sibrandes Poppema, consultant paediatrician and paediatric cardiologist Dr Zulkifli Ismail and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s health economy and public health specialist, deputy dean Dr Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh.
Poppema, a specialist in immunopathology, said all vaccines, including Sinovac, provide sufficient protection against serious illness or death from Covid-19.
He said all vaccines offer slightly lower protection against the Delta variant, “but they also prevent serious illness caused by this variant”.
Poppema said concerns over Sinovac’s efficacy were also exacerbated by news reports of Covid-19 infections and deaths, including 350 Indonesian health workers contracting the virus.
This, he said, was a “small minority” when compared to the one million healthcare workers vaccinated with Sinovac.

PETALING JAYA: Disciplinary action has been taken against a healthcare worker at a drive-through vaccination centre (PPV) in Kedah after “issues related to how she had administered the jab” were caught on video.
In a statement, the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) said the case happened on July 17 at the Sungai Petani airforce camp PPV, which was opened for armed forces personnel and their family members.
The viral video showed that no vaccine was in the syringe when it was inserted into the recipient’s arm. Personnel from the camp’s armed forces hospital were in charge of vaccinations at the PPV.

- Mobile pay has grown rapidly in the last several years to become the dominant form of payment in China.
- However, the two primary mobile pay apps — operated by Tencent and Alibaba, respectively — typically require a connection with a domestic bank account, preventing foreigner travelers from using the apps easily.
- “Foreign residents temporarily traveling in China can open an e-CNY wallet to meet daily payment needs without opening a domestic bank account,” the People’s Bank of China said in a paper released Friday.
BEIJING — Foreign travelers to China will be able to use the government-developed digital yuan without a local bank account, the country’s central bank said in a paper published Friday.
Mobile pay has grown rapidly in the last several years to become the dominant form of payment in China. Merchants often prefer not to take cash, while credit cards never took off in China the same way they did in the U.S.
However, the two primary mobile pay apps — operated by Tencent and Alibaba, respectively — typically require a connection with a domestic bank account, preventing foreigner travelers from using the apps easily.

- Zoom announced on Sunday that it’s acquiring Five9 for $14.7 billion in stock.
- This is Zoom’s first billion-dollar deal and comes as the company looks to expand beyond video chat.
- Five9′s market cap as of Friday’s close was $11.9 billion. The acquisition price amounts to a 13% premium.
Zoom announced on Sunday that it’s buying Five9, a provider of cloud contact center software, in an all-stock transaction valuing the company at $14.7 billion.
The deal marks Zoom’s first billion-dollar acquisition and comes as the company prepares for a post-pandemic world with employees returning to the office. It’s the second-biggest U.S. tech deal this year, behind Microsoft’s planned $16 billion purchase of Nuance Communications, according to FactSet.
“We are continuously looking for ways to enhance our platform, and the addition of Five9 is a natural fit that will deliver even more happiness and value to our customers,” said Zoom CEO Eric Yuan in a press release.
Five9 closed on Friday with a market cap of $11.9 billion, or $177.60 a share. Zoom said Five9 stockholders will receive 0.5533 shares of Zoom Video Communications for every Five9 share. That values Five9 at $200.28 a share, a 13% premium, and represents about 14% of Zoom’s market cap of close to $107 billion.

It’s ‘very dangerous’ to invest in stocks and bitcoin right now |

It’s ‘very dangerous’ to invest in stocks and bitcoin right now, long-time bear David Tice warns
The investor who sold his bear fund as the 2008 financial crisis was unfolding is delivering a grim long-term prognosis to Wall Street.
From the S&P 500 to Big Tech to bitcoin, David Tice warns it’s a “very dangerous period” for investors right now.
“The market is very overpriced in terms of future earnings. We are adding debt like we’ve never seen,” the former Prudent Bear Fund manager told “Trading Nation” on Friday. “We have the Treasury market acting very strange with rates falling dramatically.”
Tice, who’s known for making bearish bets during bull markets, now advises the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear ETF, which has $70 million in assets under management. The fund is up 3% over the past month, but it’s off 62% over the last two years.
He acknowledges it’s tough to time the next major pullback, and he’s often early. However, Tice is convinced a market meltdown is unavoidable.
“We’re not out of the woods yet, and this is a dangerous market,” Tice reiterated.
He’s encouraging investors to weigh the risks: Try to earn 3% to 5% near-term gains while contending with the threat of a 40% pullback? Tice thinks it’s a bet not worth taking.
Tice is particularly worried about Big Tech and the FAANG stocks, which include Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Alphabet, formerly known as Google.
“A lot of money has been thrown at Alphabet and Microsoft, Apple and Facebook, Twitter, etc.,” noted Tice. “Costs are going up in that sector.”
