India stares at potential third wave of Covid-19 |

NEW DELHI - Is a third wave inevitable? That is the question many are asking as an easing of Covid-19 restrictions has led to overcrowding at holiday destinations and marketplaces, even as the authorities warn that the next 100 days would be crucial for India's battle against the virus.
Health experts and epidemiologists believe a third wave of the pandemic is coming in the absence of strictly enforced mask-wearing and social distancing, especially if the virus mutates further.
"A third wave is expected anywhere between August and October, according to various Indian modellers. The presence of highly infectious variants, free movement and crowding of people and large numbers of unvaccinated people will create the third wave. If we observe Covid-19-appropriate behaviour and prevent superspreader events, we can limit it to a ripple, rather than a tidal wave," said Professor K. Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India.

Not a failed state, but certainly not doing well |

There’s been a lot of debate recently on this topic of a failed state. Of course, things have got political, too, like any good Malaysian debate. Why should a good debate go to waste?
Are we a failed state then? Are we in the ranks of Haiti or Lebanon or some African or South American countries which often hog the headlines for the wrong reasons?
Lots have been written about what defines a failed state. Most focus on the criterion that a failed state is a nation that has become ungovernable, with the mobs in the streets looting the nation as enthusiastically, if less elegantly, as its own leaders have done.
Are we such a nation? Of course not. Apart from political party general assemblies, the thieves are generally few and far between. While some parts of the nation can be a pretty hairy place to find yourself in (including said general assemblies), most of Malaysia is pretty safe, boring even.
Is there a hidden agenda behind the recent Bloomberg article? Political motives meant to destabilize the country so the Jews, Orientalists, or Western Capitalists will come in and colonise us again?
You’d never know. Being hidden, it’s quite difficult to see, but as we are so good at seeing hidden things, we see them everywhere.
To me, it’s just the opinion of one journalist, but man, does it strike a chord in Malaysia! The anger and support it received were dialled up to 11. You’re either for it or against it – there’s no common ground.
Then a minister stepped in with rebuttals. And if it wasn’t political to start off with, it’s definitely political now!
Much of the debate seems to focus on how Malaysia doesn’t meet the strict definition of a failed state. It’s almost like saying we may not have passed with a distinction or even a credit, but we didn’t get an F!

PETALING JAYA: Zaid Ibrahim has called on education minister Radzi Jidin to resign, given the current “deplorable” state of education in Malaysia.
The former law minister said no clear direction or decisions had been made in the past two years since Radzi was given charge of the education portfolio.
“I think he is totally useless, he should resign and let someone else do the job,” he told FMT.
Zaid noted that the ministry had yet to come up with a replacement for the now-abolished Standard Six examination and lacked a means to assess Standard Six students.
“What do you do with the students now, how do you benchmark them? The teachers are also asking this question.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Three members of the controversial Black Flag Movement, who were issued compound fines of RM2,000 each for their protest gathering yesterday, said they were “shocked” with the police’s quick action in meting out the penalty.
Also expressing shock with the police’s action, coming less than 24 hours after the event, was MUDA, which claimed this was a clear case of double standards compared to action against ministers and other VIPs.
One of the protesters, Mohammad Alshatri, said they were questioned for three hours from 9am today at the Dang Wangi police station here.
“Immediately after questioning, they issued the compound fine of RM2,000.
“We were shocked to receive an immediate notice of fine as this was not the case with VIPs who openly flouted the Covid-19 SOPs.

Puad Zakarshi: Umno should not compromise with members in Cabinet who voiced support for PM
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Umno supreme council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi has urged the party to not compromise with fellow members in the Cabinet when they went against the party’s decision to retract support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Taking to Facebook, Puad said the party must be stern in enforcing discipline and violations of any decisions by the central leadership must be taken action against.
He cited nine of the party’s federal lawmakers who are currently in the Cabinet that unanimously made a songsang (perverse) decision to support Muhyiddin on the pretense of using the rakyat, pandemic, Malay disunity and government allocations as an excuse to justify.
“People say Umno is broken. Umno is said to be feuding not because of the party’s election. Umno seemed to be in disharmony because there are some going against the party’s decision.

Despite 15 MPs ‘stolen’ from party, we still supported Perikatan says Umno’s Johari Ghani
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Umno Supreme Council Member Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said those who had criticised the party for its “tug of war” attitude which supposedly led to an unstable Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration should instead practice self-reflection.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia’s Sunday edition, Johari then reminded critics that even when 15 out of 54 Umno MPs were “stolen” by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) the party still decided to support the PN government.
Johari then explained that Umno did not fully agree to the formation of PN when other parties decided to support Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister in March 2020.
“Six months after that, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had formed PN, Umno did not agree but Umno never opposed it. In fact, at the time, we were under Muafakat Nasional with PAS, we were not angry when PAS entered PN.
