Afghanistan stunned by scale and speed of security forces’ collapse |

Last autumn, with the departure of American troops from Afghanistan looming after the US signed a withdrawal deal with the Taliban, several of the most senior security officials in Kabul urged President Ashraf Ghani to make some hard choices.
The Afghan army and police needed to retrench, figures including the then defence minister, Assadullah Khalid, told Ghani. Remote outposts, and rural areas where troops held little more than the cluster of government and security buildings that make up a “district centre”, should be abandoned.
Troops and ammunition drawn back from these areas could focus on the fight for more important assets, such as key roads and border crossings, as forces adapted to the loss of the US air force and other technical support that had been critical to fighting the Taliban, they argued.
The men urging this strategic retreat had, between them, years of experience fighting in the different iterations of Afghanistan’s civil wars, which have now stretched on for more than 40 years in a kaleidescope of shifting enemies and allies.
Ghani and his national security adviser, Hamdullah Mohib, who have multiple prestigious degrees but no battlefield experience, refused. “We’re not giving up one inch of our country,” Mohib reportedly told the assembled officials at one point, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the discussions. The government declined to comment.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia needs to learn and rethink basic assumptions about the economy for it to move forward and help people in distress, prominent economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram said today.
“You need to have counter-cyclical policies. And that is why I welcomed the Prihatin (economic stimulus package) when it first came out last year but it was not sustained. People need to live, they need to keep the economy going,” he said during the virtual Malaysian Economic Summit 2021 today.
“Given the nature of the economy today, you cannot depend on (the government) becoming an employer of last resort but you can become the buyer of last resort to keep the economy going to help people who are living in precarious conditions.”
Jomo was a panellist at a session titled “Will Productivity and Growth Return After the Covid-19 Pandemic? How to Strengthen the Competitiveness of the Malaysian Economy in the New Normal?”

Curb Covid-19 with targeted SOPs, not lockdowns, say PH MPs |

PETALING JAYA: Opposition MPs are urging Putrajaya to curb workplace Covid-19 transmissions with targeted SOPs, calling it an important precursor to reopening the economy.
Five MPs and four party members said it was time to move past the arbitrary terms of “essential” and “non-essential” sectors as even essential services can be hotbeds of virus infections.
“Instead, adopt a more scientific assessment in accordance with the risk of transmission,” they said in a joint statement.
They said the government should reopen sectors with low transmission incidence with proper SOPs.
The five MPs – Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya), Dzulkefly Ahmad (Amanah-Kuala Selangor), Wong Chen (PKR-Subang), Tan Yee Kew (PKR- Wangsa Maju) and Noor Amin Ahmad (PKR- Kangar) – said investor groups have also urged the government to reassess SOPs that have not only disrupted operations but also failed to control virus transmissions.

DAP not working with Muhyiddin, says Guan Eng |

GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today denied that his party would support Muhyiddin Yassin in a confidence vote following an Umno leader’s claim it would back the prime minister in the coming Parliament meeting.
Lim said his party and “the whole of the opposition” have called for Muhyiddin to resign as he has lost the majority support, following Umno’s decision to formally retract its support for him.
Earlier today, Umno Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government would rely on support from opposition parties, especially DAP, since Umno has stopped backing Muhyiddin.
Sinar Harian, which quoted Tajuddin, also quoted a source claiming that a confidence and supply agreement (CSA) was being negotiated between DAP and PN.
Describing Tajuddin’s claim as a lie, Lim told him to show proof of the alleged cooperation with Muhyiddin. “let alone any CSA agreement”.
“As usual, Tajuddin is talking without facts, lying through his teeth. Another piece of fake news. I have never met the prime minister since he took office,” the former finance minister told FMT.

Bersih hits back at ‘slanderous claims’ by Suaram adviser |

PETALING JAYA: Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 has hit out at Suaram adviser Kua Kia Soong for questioning whether it is really representative of the people, or a front for Pakatan Harapan.
Bersih chairman Thomas Fann said he read Kua’s comments with “bewilderment, amusement and sadness,” and wished to address the allegations levelled at the NGO.
“Bersih is not beyond scrutiny nor criticism and we welcome constructive criticism based on facts and truth, not scurrilous and slanderous accusations based on hearsay, imagination and one’s own obsession with a certain former leader,” Fann said in a statement.
“In answer to Kua’s question, ‘Is Bersih a people’s front or PH front?’, I can categorically state that we exist for the purpose of advocating for reforms that would protect and promote the interests of the people and not that of any party or coalition, let alone an individual.
“Kua alleged that Bersih was in hibernation during the 22 months that PH was in power. Anyone who follows the politics of this country or our Facebook page or website postings would know that far from being compliant or in hibernation, we have been speaking out through press releases, media interviews and comments about the political and electoral developments in Malaysia.”

Malaysia in deep crisis – A call to action |

From Munir Majid
This note is a synthesis of my own views, the discussion at the OPA Perdana Forum on July 10 and extensive comment on social as well as conventional media particularly WAGs such as Malaysia First.
There is a deep crisis in Malaysia, an urgent need for immediate action and structural reform as well as policies that have led to decay of the foundation upon which the country is established. A two-prong approach is proposed.
Immediate steps
Unlike most countries in the world confronting the most devastating pandemic of our time, Malaysia faces it with an unstable government which lacks the legitimacy of proven support in the Dewan Rakyat.
Indeed, in the 17 months since the government was formed by disputed means, it has avoided that test of Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy culminating in the declaration of an emergency ostensibly to more effectively combat the Covid-19 pandemic, a fig leaf which has been blown away by the worsening, not improving, health crisis.
An unstable government walks on thin ice, is forever looking over its shoulder for that act of betrayal that will bring it down and thinking of its next trick to stay in power. It makes appointments based on how best to secure its support and not on its ability to contain the Covid-19 virus while keeping the economy running as much as possible. It is thus not surprising that the government has failed to manage and contain the health crisis or to protect the economy.
The biggest failure of this government whatever its antecedents and however it obstructs parliamentary democracy is how it has been irresponsible in not recognising the need to form a stable government at this time of grave national crisis never before seen in the nation’s history.

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has raised another $3.6bn (£2.6bn) ahead of an expected stock market debut.
The Walmart-backed company said it will use the money to expand its operations and invest further in its grocery, fashion and delivery service.
The latest round of fund-raising increased the firm's value to $37.6bn.
The new valuation is more than double the amount the American retail chain paid for a majority stake in Flipkart three years ago.
Flipkart's chief executive Kalyan Krishnamurthy said the new funds would support the company's expansion plans: "As we serve our consumers, we will focus on accelerating growth for millions of small and medium Indian businesses."
"We will continue to invest in new categories and leverage made-in-India technology to transform consumer experiences and develop a world-class supply chain," Mr Krishnamurthy added in a company statement.
The new round of funding was led by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Japan's SoftBank and Walmart.
The deal marks the return of SoftBank, which sold its stake of around 20% of Flipkart to Walmart as part of the 2018 deal.
Other investors included sovereign wealth funds from Malaysia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
The fund-raising came as the Bengaluru-based company is expected to make its stock market debut as early this year.

FDA warns of potential rare nerve complication with Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine
(CNN)The US Food and Drug Administration updated the label on Johnson & Johnson's coronavirus vaccine Monday to warn of the possible increased risk of a rare neurological complication known as Guillain-Barré syndrome.
While the FDA said it had not established the vaccine could cause the syndrome, it noted an increase in reports of the sometimes paralyzing condition.
"Today, the FDA is announcing revisions to the vaccine recipient and vaccination provider fact sheets for the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 Vaccine to include information pertaining to an observed increased risk of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) following vaccination," it said in a statement sent to CNN.
"Reports of adverse events following use of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine under emergency use authorization suggest an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome during the 42 days following vaccination," the updated label reads.

Donald Trump just accidentally told the truth about his view on polls |

(CNN)Exactly one week ago, I wrote these words: "If you listen to him long enough -- no easy chore -- Donald Trump will tell you all his secrets."
Well, he did it again.
During his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, Texas, over the weekend, Trump let loose with this line explaining his strategy on polling:
"If it's bad, I say it's fake. If it's good, I say that's the most accurate poll ever."
Yup. That about captures it!
There are very few through lines for Donald Trump since he entered American politics in earnest in early 2015. His obsession with polling is definitely one of them.
It began as a love affair. From his earliest days as a candidate, Trump would cite polls that purported to show good news for him. He would, quite literally, read positive poll numbers out loud at rallies during the 2016 campaign. And any time a new poll came out that he deemed to be good news for him -- and there were a lot in the winter of 2015 and spring of 2016 -- Trump would take to Twitter to tout it.
