PETALING JAYA: A battle between Umno and PAS for votes and public support is now inevitable after Umno’s withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, says an analyst.
Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi said PAS had pledged its undivided support for Muhyiddin. “The conflict between Umno and Bersatu is expected to escalate after the state of emergency ends on Aug 1, so it is inevitable that PAS and Umno will fight,” he said.
Azman said PAS’ decision to stand by Muhyiddin would be viewed as the party ditching Umno and Muafakat Nasional, as PAS appeared to be more comfortable with Muhyiddin’s Bersatu.
“However if Umno is not united in upholding the party’s stand, its leaders, particularly those who go against the party’s decision, will be punished by the grassroots. This could affect Umno’s performance in the next general election,” Azman said.
He said he believes PAS will continue to support Muhyiddin so long as Muhyiddin was in power, although this could change once Parliament is dissolved.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is likely to cling on to power unless there is pressure from within his Cabinet for him to step down, said analysts.
Academician Azmi Hassan said Umno’s strategy is to continuously attack Muhyiddin for failing to manage the country during the health and economic crisis.
“They are hoping that when the prime minister falls, the position will go to the No. 2, that is Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob,” he said, referring to Ismail’s recent appointment as deputy prime minister in Muhyiddin’s government.
Azmi also said Ismail had made several public announcements since his appointment on July 9, a move seen to raise his visibility.

China is injecting $150 billion into the economy — that may fuel a short-term rally, UBS says - The People’s Bank of China is set to cut the reserve requirement ratio by 50 basis points for all banks, a move that will release around 1 trillion yuan ($154 billion) in long-term liquidity into the economy.
- “We think this broad-based RRR cut could boost market sentiment in the short term and improve stock market liquidity,” UBS analysts Lei Meng and Eric Lin wrote in a note on Monday.
- However, the market rally may be short-lived given concerns over the slowing economic growth, the bank indicated.
China’s move to cut the amount of funds banks need to hold in reserve could boost market sentiment — and that could be good news for stocks in certain sectors, according to investment bank UBS.
The People’s Bank of China said Friday it would cut the reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 50 basis points for all banks, effective from July 15. The move is expected to release around 1 trillion yuan (or $154 billion) in long-term liquidity into the economy.
The reserve requirement represents the amount of money that banks must hold in their coffers as a proportion of their total deposits. A lowering of that required amount will increase the supply of money that banks can lend to businesses and individuals.

The Metropolitan Policeis investigating the abuse and said "it will not be tolerated".

PETALING JAYA: Health minister Dr Adham Baba’s gaffe at a talk in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UTM) – where he slipped up and changed a health crisis into a sex stimulant – has drawn flak on social media, with even politicians poking fun at the MP’s flu-fly mix-up.
In a viral video on Twitter, Adham can be heard saying that in 1916, the Spanish “fly” (instead of flu) had killed about a million people around the world and it happened for two years.
The Spanish flu between 1918-1920 is said to have infected about 500 million people and killed between 17 million and 100 million people.
The hashtag #Spanishfly also started trending on Twitter.
In response to the gaffe, former education minister Maszlee Malik took to Twitter, saying the “Spanish fly” was actually a wrestling move, calling the move very dangerous.
In wrestling, it is a move that sees an opponent being brought down from the top rope with a somersault that could snap his neck.
However, Spanish fly is mostly used as reference to a sex stimulant but may also refer to an emerald-green member of the beetle family.

Sweet treat : Man asks opposition MP for birthday cake instead of usual aid to celebrate mum’s big day
KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — The resulting economic hardship of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns have left many in dire need of daily essentials.
But for a less fortunate man, all he wanted was a birthday cake to cheer up his mother who is also a person with disabilities (PwD) on her big day in these trying times.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng took to Twitter to relate his encounter with Shin (not his real name) on Saturday when he was distributing aid to the communities affected by the lockdown, who asked him for a birthday cake instead of aid or supplies.
“I asked if he wanted anything else, he just wanted to buy a cake for his mother, nothing else.”
Lim revealed that Shim was diagnosed with a spine tumour early this year where parts of his muscles shrink making him dependent on crutches.
“He relies heavily on his mother.”

Malaysian employers call for new SOPs for those who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19
KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — The proposed guidelines for individuals who received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccines should be clear, consistent and include proper standard operating procedures (SOPs) to protect the health and safety of employees and the public.
Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) president Datuk Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the SOPs should still apply to those who completed the vaccination as there was no guarantee that they would be fully protected against Covid-19.
“Based on the experiences of other countries thus far, fully vaccinated individuals are allowed to move freely and that those infected suffered less severely, not requiring intensive care and thus do not over burden the public health system.
“But, there is no clinical evidence (yet) to show that those who received two doses of the vaccine would be free from Covid-19 as the mutations and emergence of new and more virulent variants had no clinical evidence to show that the vaccines would be effective protection,” he said in a statement today.

PETALING JAYA: With just two weeks to go to the special five-day Parliament sitting from July 26, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon says they are still waiting for a notice from the Cabinet before they can inform MPs of the agenda.
He said 28 days’ notice was usually given to MPs but under Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat, they would need special notice from the Cabinet since this was a special sitting.
“Since the sitting will be about government affairs, we will need to wait for notice in writing to know the (agenda),” he told FMT.
He said once MPs receive the approval, they will then organise two committee meetings to discuss the logistics of hybrid sittings, as some will attend the sitting in person while others will register online.
He said MPs had put forward a proposal on holding hybrid sittings to de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan to discuss with the National Security Council (MKN) and the health ministry.
“We can only hold the two committee meetings once we get the notice,” he added.
