PETALING JAYA: Before the likes of M Rajamani and Marina Chin, who are credited with stimulating the popularity of track and field among girls and women, there was Annie Choong.
The sprint queen of the 1950s, Choong was the first Malaysian woman to compete in the Olympics at a time when most females fought shy of sports.
As a 22-year-old, she was the only woman athlete among the 32 competitors when Malaya made its Olympic debut in Melbourne in 1956.
She competed in the 100 yards on merit and might have been eliminated in the heats, clocking 12.73 seconds to finish fourth, but the impact she had on women’s sports in Malaysia was notable.

PETALING JAYA: Be truly “impartial” in carrying out your duties, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun has been reminded by his predecessor.
Speaking at an online forum today, former Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof said his criticism of Azhar was regarding impartiality.
“As a Dewan Rakyat Speaker, you have to be impartial. You cannot side with the executive.
“The Speaker is the speaker of the whole house, for heaven’s sake. Someone has to tell him.
“He or she must be impartial. You cannot protect a minister. You cannot suggest an answer to the minister,” he said at the forum titled “Whither Democracy and Constitutional Monarchy in Malaysia today?”

Calling for targeted MCO approach, Guan Eng says govt can be replaced but lives and livelihoods can’t
KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today called on the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government to use a targeted movement control order (MCO) approach based on science and data from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
He added in the same statement today that while the government and its leaders can be replaced, the same cannot be said of lives and livelihoods lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Bagan MP pointed to The Economist’s ranking on Malaysia, in which the nation was placed last in its global normalcy index of recovery, which is a measurement of how well countries are doing in returning to normalcy after the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also pointed to international publication Bloomberg’s opinion piece yesterday, which painted Malaysia as heading towards a failed statehood.
“This is both a shameful moment and a damning indictment of the failure of the PN government in dealing with the quadruple crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic, economic recession, chronic political instability and disintegrating social resilience. And yet, no single minister of the current administration has owned up to their failure or resigned to take responsibility, like India’s health minister recently,” the former finance minister said.
Lim also took a jab at recently appointed Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, labelling him the “Senior minister in charge of serial failures of MCOs”.
“Instead, the senior minister in charge of the serial failures of MCOs is promoted to deputy prime minister. Our health minister continues to reign despite once asking Malaysians to drink warm water to prevent Covid-19. The prime minister clings on to power despite losing his parliamentary majority, his political legitimacy and moral authority. There is neither shame nor public accountability,” Lim added.
He lamented that Malaysia is spiralling downwards with no end in sight with regards to the Covid-19 pandemic management.

PETALING JAYA: Federal territories minister Annuar Musa has become the subject of ridicule and anger among netizens after he posted on social media that he had paid a visit to former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at his house and had lunch with him today.
Visiting is not allowed under the current lockdown SOPs.
Further, Kuala Lumpur is still under Phase 1 of the national recovery plan (NRP). Under this phase, social activities such as gatherings and visiting are not allowed, unless for emergency purposes.
In a now-deleted Twitter post, Annuar said he and his wife visited the former prime minister, better known as Pak Lah, at his residence in Kuala Lumpur.
The Ketereh MP added that they spent two hours together and even had lunch cooked by Pak Lah’s wife, Jeanne Abdullah.

KOTA KINABALU: Netizens took to a social media posting by an Austrian minister to vent their “frustrations and anger” at international trade and industry minister Azmin Ali.
Austrian federal minister for digital and economic affairs Margarete Schramböck had shared on her Facebook page the meeting she had with Azmin yesterday, thanking her Malaysian counterpart for the visit and also expressed the country’s interest in working closely in future.
But Malaysians, seemingly Azmin detractors, flooded her thread, being cordial and respectful towards Schramböck but warning her to be wary of the former PKR deputy president.
“Hope you can school him or you can take him forever to your country,” a netizen, under the name Khairil Hazwan Hamzah, posted.
Sathia Murthy also told the Austrian minister: “He is currently in the midst of a homeless crisis in his own party and he has this special ability of hopping — he may hop to your party in future.”

Army general: Lack of speed, no unified coordination reason behind Malaysia’s failure to fight Covid third wave
KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — The lack of unified action and coordination from top brass to bottom is the reason why the country can’t fight the third wave of Covid-19, Head of Management of the Health Services Division of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Brigadier General Dr Mohd Arshil Moideen said.
Astro Awani reported that this, in turn, also contributed to delays in the control, diagnosis and isolation of Covid-19 cases.
“What I see is the absence of ‘unified action’ and ‘coordination’ from the top to down.
“I am commenting from a professional point of view where there are many things that have been decided at the centre, but its implementation is at the level of every other state. Similarly, one state has its implementation in every other district, this is what we can see when there is no ‘unified action’ and ‘coordination’.

KUALA LUMPUR: A joint statement by component parties in Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Barisan Nasional welcoming the Dewan Rakyat sitting but cautioning it from being used for any personal agenda, saw the conspicuous absence of Umno from the list.
The joint statement, signed by the information chiefs of all the parties, welcomed the government’s announcement that all emergency ordinances and the national recovery plan would be tabled at a special Dewan Rakyat sitting for five days from July 26.
“We hope that this special session will be used as a platform to discuss issues related to the people’s interests, and not be misused for personal gain,” the statement said.

As China leaps ahead on digital currency, a top central bank group is calling for global cooperation
- The Bank for International Settlements said in a report Friday that central banks should work to achieve “interoperability” between their digital currency projects.
- This can be achieved through a number of ways, the report said, such as creating common standards and establishing international payment infrastructures.
- The People’s Bank of China has been leading the way on central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs, with real-world trials already live in several cities.
LONDON — Top financial institutions are calling for global cooperation on central bank digital currencies.
The Bank for International Settlements, the global body for central banks, issued a report Friday saying that central banks should work to achieve “interoperability” between their digital currency projects.
This can be achieved through a number of ways, the report said, such as creating common standards and establishing international payment infrastructures.
The report was written in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Several central banks are exploring digital currencies which would be issued by central banks to commercial banks or directly to the public. Their efforts have intensified over the past year amid a decline in cash usage and growing interest in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.
