Concerns over rising Covid-19 death rate in Taiwan despite drop in cases
Posted by: superadmin - 07-10-2021, 01:51 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

TAIPEI - Taiwanese health authorities, once lauded for their handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, have now come under a cloud over their handling of a recent surge in cases.

There is increasing concern about lax contact tracing and the mounting death rate which, according to media reports, included three people who were in hotel quarantine.

The concerns come despite the fact that infections are back to two-digit figures some two months after locally-transmitted cases grew by the hundreds each day.

On Friday (July 9), the island reported 32 local cases, a huge drop from the peak of 535 on May 17.

The death rate though has increased significantly, tripling from 1.57 per cent on April 10 to 4.74 per cent now.

A lot of anger has been directed at what is being considered as lax contact tracing with one notorious case involving a man dubbed the "Lion King" by Taiwanese netizens.

Changing failed leaders during crisis is nothing new, says Umno’s VP
Posted by: superadmin - 07-10-2021, 12:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Khaled-Nordin-n-Muhyiddin-Yassin-Collage-100721.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A leader who has effectively failed to manage a serious crisis can be changed and this is not something strange or irresponsible, says Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Citing Italy, Slovakia and Poland, among others, he said the heads of the government or ministers entrusted with responsibilities in these countries had either resigned voluntarily or were sacked for failing to contain the pandemic.

He said although some have argued that it was important to focus on the government’s efforts to combat Covid-19 and set aside any politically motivated actions, Khaled said this was not entirely true.

“This is because the basis of optimism rests on the assumption that those given the responsibility to manage the pandemic are the most qualified and able to bring about the anticipated recovery.”

Unfortunately, that is not the case now, as shown by Umno’s withdrawal of support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, he said in a statement.

Giant pandas are no longer endangered, thanks to conservation efforts, China says
Posted by: superadmin - 07-10-2021, 10:50 AM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

[Image: 210709050012-giant-panda-china-file-exlarge-169.jpg]

(CNN)Giant pandas are no longer endangered, Chinese officials have said, after decades of work to save the creatures helped drive their population in the wild up to 1,800.

The species will be re-classified as vulnerable, Cui Shuhong, director of the Department of Natural Ecological Protection of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said at a press conference on Wednesday.

China has spent half a century attempting to boost the population of its famous animals, creating sprawling panda reserves across several mountain ranges in an effort to save them from extinction.

They were taken off the endangered list by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2016, but that decision was not initially mirrored by Chinese officials.

"China has established a relatively complete nature reserves system," Cui said on Wednesday as he announced the move. "Large areas of natural ecosystems have been systematically and completely protected, and wildlife habitats have been effectively improved."

Health ministry to probe empty vaccine syringe claim
Posted by: superadmin - 07-10-2021, 10:40 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

LARUT: The health ministry is investigating a claim that a Covid-19 vaccine recipient was injected with an empty syringe.

Deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali said the ministry viewed the matter seriously and an in-depth investigation would be carried out because issues or problems related to vaccination were not something that could be taken lightly at this time.

“This is not the time to joke around, I strongly disagree and deeply regret this bad news.

“Apart from worrying about the increase and spread in Covid-19 cases, we are also worried about the spread of fake news. We have to verify,” he told a press conference after visiting the Selama Vaccination Centre today.

A video purportedly showing a man being injected with an empty syringe went viral on social media recently.

Government falls when PM resigns, says ex-judge
Posted by: superadmin - 07-10-2021, 10:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Muhyiddin-Yassin-Ismail-Sabri-n-Hishammu...100721.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The entire government falls when the prime minister resigns from office, as held by court rulings, a retired judge says.

Gopal Sri Ram said this was decided in the 1995 High Court ruling in the case of Amir Kahar Tun Datu Mustapha v Mohd Said Keruak (then the Sabah governor).

In that case, Sabah chief minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan had resigned from office but Amir Kahar, who was a deputy chief minister, would not relinquish his position although a new chief minister had been appointed.

“The court held that the cabinet goes along with the chief minister (head of government),” Sri Ram said, adding that this legal principle was affirmed by the Federal Court in the Perak case in 2010.

He was responding to Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa’s statement yesterday that Muhyiddin Yassin would be pushed to resign “in the next day or two” after Umno withdraws its support for him as prime minister.

Malaysia nowhere near being failed state, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 07-09-2021, 08:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Empty-Road-Jalan-TAR-KL-Covid-19-MCO-020420-FMT-11.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is not on the path to being a failed state despite the current health, economic and political crises, say analysts.

Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs explained that failed statehood would entail the absence of a functioning government and the collapse of the nation’s economy.

“Typically, warlords and bandits roam free and black market economy becomes the order of the day. Both personal security as well as livelihoods are typically at great risk in such countries. Massacres and famine often follow suit,” he told FMT.

Oh said the most recent country veering towards a failed state was Haiti, which saw its president Jovenal Moise assassinated on Wednesday. Some West African countries prone to coups and civil wars are also high on the list of failed states, along with Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.

In this regard, he said, Malaysia was not yet a failed state but it could see widespread unrest if it did not meaningfully stimulate its economy with structural reforms and continued to toy with a government often seen as illegitimate.

There’s no ‘quiet coup’, Umno man tells Mujahid
Posted by: superadmin - 07-09-2021, 06:57 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An Umno supreme council member has denied claims by a former minister that the party is planning a “quiet coup” against the government through new deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Responding to Mujahid Yusof Rawa’s comments, Puad Zarkashi said only the King had the authority to appoint an interim prime minister while Parliament could elect a new one altogether.

Either way, the decision was not in Umno’s hands, he told FMT.

He maintained that Umno wanted to return to power through the proper democratic process, namely a general election, by returning the mandate to the people.

“After Umno retracted support for the prime minister and urged him to resign, Umno’s confidence is that the Perikatan Nasional government has lost its majority support.

I’d rather be blacklisted than see family starve, says M40 employer
Posted by: superadmin - 07-09-2021, 06:49 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: With savings dwindling due to the lockdown, an employer from the M40 income group says he would rather fail to service his loans and be blacklisted by financial institutions than see his family starve.

Mohd Fakhzan Rosli, who owns Scuba Club Langkawi, was forced to dip into his savings to pay his workers’ salaries and to fulfil other commitments after the pandemic struck last year.

But he still had many financial commitments that he needed to meet, and had received calls warning him that he would be blacklisted if he failed to pay up.

“I have now reached the point of being blacklisted, but never mind. I would rather be on the blacklist than see my children and wife starve,” he told FMT.

Iran and Russia move to fill diplomatic vacuum in Afghanistan
Posted by: superadmin - 07-09-2021, 06:40 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 5472.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...3a3f1b6811]

Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and Russia have moved to fill the military and diplomatic vacuum opening up in Afghanistan as a result of the departure of US forces and military advances by the Taliban.

In Tehran the Iranian foreign minister, Javad Zarif, met Taliban negotiators to discuss their intentions towards the country, and secured a joint statement saying the Taliban do not support attacks on civilians, schools, mosques and hospitals and want a negotiated settlement on Afghanistan’s future.

The Taliban side was led by Abbas Stanekzai, a senior negotiator and head of the group’s political bureau in Qatar, while the Afghan government side was led by the former vice-president Yunus Qanooni.

You’re wrong, precedent set by Perak crisis, PH tells AG
Posted by: superadmin - 07-09-2021, 06:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan has doubled down on its criticism of Attorney-General Idrus Harun, saying he was wrong in stating that Muhyiddin Yassin remains the prime minister until his parliamentary majority is tested in Parliament.

The opposition coalition’s legal committee said that the loss of confidence in the prime minister need not be established only by a vote of confidence in Parliament.

They argued that a precedent was set by the 2009 Perak constitutional crisis where the Sultan appointed Zambry Abdul Kadir of Umno to succeed PAS’ Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as menteri besar following a series of defections.

“The statement by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that his party is withdrawing its support for the Tan Sri Muhyiddin-led Perikatan Nasional government indicates very clearly that the PM has ceased to command the confidence of the majority of members of Parliament,” they said in a statement.

It was issued by William Leong, Sivarasa Rasiah, Fadhlina Sidek of PKR; Mohamed Hanipa Maidin, Muhammad Faiz Fadzil and Zulqarnain Lukman of Amanah and DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh.
